Level List INTRODUCTION This is a FAQ for Fatal Labyrinth for Sega Genesis. This is an RPG that is different every time you play. This game got a rather bum rap in several game magazines several years ago (EGM especially) but it's a very fun game and a good way to kill an afternoon. As usual, this FAQ is copyrighted by me, and if you want to use it, please let me know first. PLACES TO GET THIS FAQ www.gamefaqs.com www.geocities.com/~z-force (My home page) EQUIPMENT LIST There are lots of different weapons and armor to get in this game. You'll want to get the best stuff you can in order to fight the bad guys Weapons - There are 4 kinds of weapons, learn them well For each weapon, I list its name and the power level it has. Same for armor, later on. Remarks for weapons * - Weapon is cursed (hold on to it though, for the reason why, check out the secrets) ** - Weapon is very rare Swords - Swords have the best combination of accuracy and power. Late in the game, you will want to have the most powerful kind you can get. Knife - 1 (you start with this weapon) Short Sword - 2 Long Sword - 4 Cutlass Sword - 7 Steel Sword - 10 Shinobi Sword - 12 Silver Sword - 14 **Gradius - 16 Lightning Sword - 18 **Masamune - 21 **Excalibur - 25 *- Blood Sword - ??? Axes - Axes do a lot of damage if they hit... If that is. They have very low accuracy. Good for the early stages of the game. Later on, you don't want to slug it out with powerful monsters Hand Axe - 7 Battle Axe - 15 Heavy Axe - 20 **Romillian Axe - 26 * Golden Axe - ? Spears - Spears don't do as much damage as the other types of weapons, but hit the most often. Spear - 1 Lance - 2 Trident - 5 ** - Tiger Lance - 10 * - Skull Lance - ? Bows - Bows allow you to attack from a distance. They are a pain to use though, and I don't bother with them unless I get the Sagittarius Bow, which is useful to wear out the last guy They do have another use though, see the secrets for details. Short Bow - 1 Long Bow - 2 Elf Bow - 5 ** - Sagittarius Bow - 10 * - Evil Bow - ? Shurikens - You can equip these, and they have a power of 2. They are better suited for throwing them at enemies. For each one you pick up, you can throw them 3 times. They're pretty useful for taking out magician enemies on the early to mid levels. Armor You need armor to protect yourself. The higher your AC, the harder the enemies time will be hitting you. Body Armor Leather - 2 Ring - 6 Chain - 8 Scale - 10 Silver - 16 Battle - 22 * Lambada - ? Shields Leather - 1 Wood - 2 Large - 4 Steel - 6 Silver - 8 Platinum - (don't remember the value, I think it's either 12 or 15) I think there is a cursed shield, but I don't remember the name Helmets Leather - 1 Chain - 3 Iron - 5 Steel - 7 Silver - 12 Hyper - 15 * Evil Helm - ? (Not sure if this exists, but I'm pretty sure it does Magic Items - These are items of great power... use them wisely Rings - Rings are generally worn, but sometimes you throw them at enemies Blizzard, Lightning, Flame - These do damage when you throw them at an enemy Armor Strengthening - AC up 3 points. Nice to have in the early levels. Power Up - Strength up 3 points. It's up to you whether to use this or the armor ring Curse Ring - Your HP doesn't recover with time. Wears off after a while Dark - Puts you in darkness temporarily Food - Not totally sure, but I'm pretty sure it slows down the rate of food consumption. Heal - Increases the rate of healing while walking. The best ring to have. Every so often you must reequip it though. I think there is a ring that steals all your food too. Scrolls - Any scroll effects last for the level you use them on. Chaos - All the monsters on the level become confused. The best scroll to have, especially on later levels. This scroll lasts for one level Search - You see items in the places you haven't been to yet. Moderately useful, you can see if the swords are good or not. If you can see them in the darkness, they are good, otherwise they're actually ghosts. Rust Proof - Your gear has been saved from rust. I don't think this actually does anything useful Appraisal - Lets you check the effect of one item. Sleep - This puts you to sleep. This is obviously bad. Armor Strengthen - AC +1 Weapon Strengthen - Pick any one weapon. Its power is increased by 1. It has a better use though, see the secret section Curse Removal - Dispels a curse. Useful against the last guy, or anyone else who casts Chaos on you. Teleport - Teleports you to a random location on the level. Useful if you're surrounded, but you may wind up in an even worse predicament. Newspaper - Doesn't do anything Canes - Canes control some powerful Magic. Usually they are directed on one enemy Anti Magic - No monster can use magic on you. Very helpful, especially on guys who use Chaos and other nasty spells. Lasts for the floor it's used on. Blizzard, Flame, Lightning - Do direct damage to any one monster Kamikaze - Kills a monster instantly Hypnosis - Put a monster to sleep, so you can beat them down Slow - Slows a monster down Wooden - Does nothing Pit - Creates a pit where you are standing. You won't fall down it right away, but don't step on it Potions - These are effects on yourself. Potions with adverse effects can be thrown at bad guys to mess them up. Blinder - Puts you in darkness Power Up - Power +1 Use these right away Heal - Recover HP Hunger - Food goes down to 1 Recover - Heal HP Poison - Lose some HP Quicken - Speeds you up and doubles your attacks. Helpful against the last guy. There are also potions that slow you down and put you in chaos. Other Items Gold - The more gold you get, the nicer your grave is if you die. Yes, that's all it's good for. I usually don't even bother with it because 1) I seldom die and 2) later on, most of the gold bags are mimics anyway Food - You need food to survive, otherwise, your HP will slowly drop. Picking up food gives you either 10, 20, or 30 points of food.. Be careful when grabbing it. If you go over 80 food, your movement is slowed until it gets under 80. If you reach 99 food, you die. Name: Wizard Level: 9 Speed: Slow Hallway: no Range Attack: no Other Powers: Chaos Magic Remarks: These guys are annoying since they confuse you.. Using shurikens on them is a good strategy. Name: Mimic Level: 10 Speed: stationary Hallway: no Range Attack: no Other Powers: none Remarks: They pose as gold bags, and don't attack unless you do. They can do some good damage and are hard to hit. Don't bother picking up gold bags on later levels. Name: Ghost Level: 10 Speed: fast Hallway: yes Range Attack: no Other Powers: none Remarks: They pose as a sword. Once you hit them, they attack you. They're fast and annoying, so wait till you get rid of the rest of the guys before picking up any swords. Name: Shinobi Level: 11 Speed: fast Hallway: yes Range Attack: yes Other Powers: steal gold Remarks: They're more powerful than ninjas and can steal your gold. As if that's a big deal. Name: Fire Tree Level: 11 Speed: Stationary Hallway: no Range Attack: yes Other Powers: no Remarks: They can do a lot of damage, but since they don't move, you can beat them fairly easily Name: Blue Jelly Level: 11 Speed: slow Hallway: no Range Attack: no Other Powers: They can multiply themselves Remarks: Try to take them out fast before their numbers overwhelm you. Name: Insect Level: 12 Speed: fast Hallway: yes Range Attack: yes Other Powers: they can melt your armor Remarks: the ability to melt your armor is pretty bad, but since you can find tons of replacements, it isn't exactly life threatening. The illness it causes can be cured with a healing potion Name: Clay Level: 17 Speed: fast Hallway: yes Range Attack: no Other Powers: Steals food Remarks: Food is plentiful enough so that you can always find more, so this guy is usually more of a pest than anything else. Name: Granz Level: 19 Speed: medium Hallway: no Range Attack: yes Other Powers: None Remarks: A more powerful Big Eye Name: Flowster Level: 21 Speed: medium Hallway: yes Range Attack: yes Other Powers: None Remarks: A mobile fire tree. Name: Dragon Level: 29 Speed: medium Hallway: yes Range Attack: yes Other Powers: Fire Blast Remarks: The strongest monster next to the final boss. Traps There are two kinds of traps to watch out for. Pits - If you step on one, you fall down a level. This is annoying, but not fatal, unless you get dropped into a den of bad guys. Alarm - If you step on these, all monsters in the level will be alerted to your presence. Any "sleeping" monsters will be woken up. This is most dangerous on levels 5-9 where the robots are around. Step on one there, and you'll be up to your armpits in robots. Strategies The most important thing is to pace yourself and pick monsters off. Stand in a doorway and fight the monsters one at a time. Sitting in the middle of the room is asking for death. Also, explore every level thoroughly Also, be careful. When you kill all the monsters on a level, if you dilly dally, they will all come back. So either leave one monster, or kill everyone then leave fast. Levels 1-4 Early on, try to fight every monster and get all the items you can. You'll need magic items, especially chaos scrolls and anti magic canes in the later levels. Use the stuff as you get it, so that you know what it does in the future. Early on, you'll want to use an axe, preferably a battle axe, so you can take out the weak monsters in one hit. Although, if you pick up a long sword, you may want to use that instead. Survival is important, as you'll have to get to level 5 before you can continue if you die. Equipment to try to get: Hand Axe, Battle Axe, or Long Sword (although the last 2 are hard to get early on) Full compliment of Leather Armor Levels 5-9 Once you get here, you have a little breathing room, as you will only go back to level 5 if you die, and you'll keep whatever you had at level 5. Take on robots for experience, but fight them one at a time. Again, try to get stuff for later on. Try to learn what your stuff does as well. Try to wait till you're near food before using potions, in case you get the one that takes all your food. It's better to find out which stuff is bunk now, where the monsters are weak, then later, when everyone will kill you dead. Equipment to try to get: Long Sword, Ring Armor, Chain Helm, Wood Shield Level 10 Use a chaos scroll if you have it. Otherwise, all the monsters will clump together. You don't want this to happen. If they are all confused, you can pick em off one by one. Grab all the stuff, kill all the guys and get out. Use as many of your items as you can, so that you know what they do later. Levels 11-14 Watch out for the insects, who melt your armor. Have some spares in case this happens. Try to get a Shinobi Sword, otherwise, use the Trident (they're pretty easy to find) Other than that, there isn't much to be careful of here, so just do what you usually do to advance. Once you get to this point, you don't want to use axes anymore, as it usually takes more than one hit to off the bad guys, so use a weapon that will actually hit. Equipment to try to get: Shinobi Sword (or Trident), Scale Armor, Steel Shield, Steel Helm Levels 15-19 You may be able to find a Trident if you're lucky, otherwise, try to get a Silver Sword, or stick with your trident. You might also find Silver Armor if you're REALLY lucky. Watch out for Medusas at level 17 and up. Other powerful enemies are here too. Levels 20-24 The monsters here start getting super tough. The best weapon you will likely find is a lightning sword, though you may get a Tiger Lance, which is great for spear fans. If you get a cursed weapon, hold on to it, but don't equip it yet. Equipment to try to get: Lightning Sword (Or Tiger Lance), Silver Armor, Silver Shield, Hyper Helm Levels 25-29 Really strong enemies await you here. You may find a mega sword if you are really lucky, otherwise stick with your Lightning Sword. Also, these are the places to use those Chaos scrolls and Anti Magic canes you've been hoarding. :Level 30 Use a Chaos Scroll right away, assuming you still have one. Dragons, Gorgons, Hell Fish, and Chaos await you here. Avoid all the monsters and go straight for the Holy Goblet. This will kill all the monsters and you still get the EXP for them. Hopefully, you're on the highest level (Lordmaster) by now. Final Boss Use a quicken potion if you have one. This doubles the amount of hits you can do. Also, Chaos, Antimagic and the like don't affect him, so don't bother. Throw any rings you have at him to wear him out, along with canes, then run in and fight him with your best weapon (hopefully a good sword) He can teleport you around the area, along with confusion spells. If you have some curse removal scrolls, they come in handy. Otherwise, just wail on him. He's not overly tough. Once you beat him, you win the game. SECRETS (these were taken from gamesages.com) Fight with your fists - If you discard whatever weapon you are using, you can fight enemies with your hands. 99 AC - Every time you equip a bow, your AC goes down 1. If you have 2 bows, alternate between them. Eventually, your AC drops to 0. Equip it again, and your AC goes to 99. This makes you very tough to beat. Mega Weapons - If you have a weapon strengthen scroll, use it on one of the cursed weapons (Blood Sword, Skull Lance, Golden Axe) Then you'll be able to equip it. The strength will be only listed as 1, but it's still super powerful and will off most monsters with one or 2 hits. RANKING LIST These are the rankings you can earn, along with the number of HP you have. This HP level is a guesstimate, so you may have a few more or less than the listed amount. Also, at the 1st level, you gain 1HP at a time. Each ranking you gain, that number increases by one.
