HOW TO PLAY a) - FAQ Command Notation b) - Controls c) - Skills 2. FREE KICKS 3. SPECIAL ABILITIES 4. MASTER LEAGUE BARGAINS 5. ROSTERS 6. CREDITS ============================================= 1. HOW TO PLAY ============================================= a) - FAQ Command Notation --------------------------- U - up D - down L - left R - right UL - up and left together UR - up and right together DL - down and left together DR - down and right together O - Circle [] - Square /\ - Triangle b) - Controls --------------- Dashing ------- R1 - fast dash, less control of the ball but more speed. Only use this when you have a clear path in front of your player. R2 - slower dash, more control over the ball, easier turning, more responsive to passing/shooting commands than R1 dash. L1 - Slow dash, even slower than normal speed. This enables your player to turn sharply, hold off opposition players, and dribble better. Good for tight spaces. Passing ------- X - normal pass, basic ground pass to team mate. O - high pass, chipped pass to teammate, more liable to interceptions. /\ - through pass. This pass should be used when teammates make forward runs in behind the opposition defence. There is an element of skill required to make this pass effective. Timing is crucial. L1 and /\ - chipped through pass, useful when there are a number of defensive opposition players in front of you and threading a normal through pass may be too difficult. As with the normal pass, this also requires good timing. Tackling -------- X - often referred to as "press", or "pressing". This command makes your player attempt to stick a foot in and the nip the ball away from your opponent. It's also the most basic defensive command, so learn how to do it or a pro player will dribble round you with ease. [] - this will make another of your team mates come to your aid, and try to help close down an opposition player with the ball. It can be very useful, but can also be exploited. Remember, calling a team mate to help will leave a gap somewhere else... O - the sliding tackle. The upside of this tackle is that it can be great when a player you know is too fast for your defender has the ball and you cannot reach him with an X tackle. However the chances of this tackle succeeding can be limited if the opponent player is extremely fast, as you will more than likely foul him. If you are the last man before this player only has the goalkeeper to beat, and you foul him, you will have around a 99% chance off being sent off. If you foul somebody using this tackle, and come from directly behind the fouled opponent, you also may be sent off. Use this carefully, and watch your timing :). Shooting -------- [] - the shoot button. This is a very versatile button. Holding towards the goal as you strike the ball, will make the ball travel faster and with more accuracy. The length of time you hold in the directional button after you hit the [] button, can mean the difference between a shot that scrapes the outside of the post on it's way past for a goal kick, or a shot that nestles in the corner of the net and rolls around the back of the goal, to make that "complete" replay experience :). L1 and [] - a dink chip shot, which the player will attempt to just dink the ball up and over the goalkeeper. The shot tends to go up more than forward. Bear in mind this shot is best for when you are close in on goal. R1 and [] - when your power gauge is filling after you have pressed the shoot button, holding in R1 will result in a chip shot. This version however, is more powerful and the ball travels forward more than up. It can be used from a greater distance than the L1 chip. Double Tap [] - this has to be turned on in the options menu. By quickly tapping [], you will perform a very small chip that you should only use once the keeper has committed himself to diving at your feet. Remember, the key to goalscoring is the same no matter which method you use, hold in that directional button for as long as possible :). Crossing -------- This can vary depending on which method you have enabled in the options menu, of which there are five to choose from. I use version four,as one, two and three are too CPU controlled for my liking. Option five is useless, as the high pass is then only able to travel in the direction your player is facing. The following controls are based on using version four in the options menu. L1 and O - a direct cross. No matter where on the pitch you are, this command will attempt to put the ball into your opponent's penalty area. Highly effective for counter attacks. O and a direction - when outside the opponent's penalty box, you can choose where you want to play your cross to. Double tap O and a direction - same as above, but this time the ball is played at a lower height. Ideal for near post forwards. Triple tap O and a direction - plays a cross along the ground at speed. Good for smaller players who are running in behind a tall defence. One - two ---------- By pressing L1 and X, your player will pass to a team-mate and begin to attempt to run in behind the opposition defence. Once the ball has been passed, you take control of the player the ball was passed to. You have to time your return pass back to your team-mate, who has made the run forward. You have a number of ways in which to return the pass, these are: /\ - a ground return pass. O - a chipped return pass. X - a pass to another team-mate, other than your original runner. This final option is more of a decoy. c) - Skills ------------- Repeated tapping of L1 - your player will perform a stepover manouevre. Press L1 three times quickly then a direction, your player will stepover the ball numerous times before dribbling off in the direction you pressed. Repeated tapping of L2 - your player will perform the same as above, but a shorter stepover and more control. Up/down then forward - As you are running with the ball using the R2 dash, when the ball is not at your feet, i.e. it's just in front of you, press up or down then forward quickly, and you player will perform a small two foot shuffle in the direction you pressed. However, only certain players are capable of this, as they need to have the BF Fake ability. [] then X - as your power bar fills for the shot, press X. Your player will fake the shot and turn away from any opposing defender. Players with BF Fake ability, can fake in both directions. Note - good defenders may not be fooled by this and could still tackle you regardless. [] then /\ - again used as your shot gauge fills. Hit /\ and your player will continue running in the direction he faces, cancelling the shot. ========================================= 2. FREE KICKS ========================================= These have become more difficult from previous version of Winning Eleven/ISS. If used properly, they can be devastating. A good PES player will practice free kicks often, so that when the time comes during a vital match, you can deliver a killer blow. Down and [] - performs a shot which has more loft in it, and less power. These free kicks are best used when the foul has been committed near the edge of the penalty area. Up and [] - performs a more powerful shot, with less height. Best for long distance free kicks, say anything above 29m out. Curve and dip ------------- Hold in the direction you wish to curve the ball in to add curve in that direction - simple. By holding in X or /\ after the ball has left your player's boot, the ball will vary in dip. X will make the ball dip more, but result in a slower shot. /\ will make the ball dip, but not as much. The shot however will lose less velocity as it travels. It is ESSENTIAL that you do not press either of these until the ball has been struck. Do so and the ball will 99% sure fail to clear the wall. All of these commands can be used together, up/down, left/right, /\/[]. This is what makes free kick taking an art. As they say, practice makes perfect. And the results are satisfying :) . ========================================= 3. SPECIAL ABILITIES ========================================= Dribbling : When the CPU is playing, it will attempt to dribble more with this player. P.Player : Good first touch. Position : Takes up good striking positions inside the box. Reaction : Off the ball movement. Scoring : Increases the chances of finishing well. Command : Makes team-mates make off the ball runs, playmakers like Beckham, Zidane have this ability. Passing : When the said player has the ball, more team-mates try to help him out by making themselves available for passing. BF Fake : Can dribble with both feet. PK : Good at penalties. 1-1 : Good in one on one situations with the keeper. L-Throw : Good at long throw-ins. 1-Tch Pass : Good at direct passing, i.e. forward passing. Outside : Can pass or shoot with the outside of their boot. Man Mark : Good man-marker. D-Line : Good at controlling the defensive line, catching forwards out on offside rule. Sliding : Good sliding tackler, will keep control of the ball, rather than it rolling out after a slide tackle. Intercept : Good at anticipating and intercepting passes. Fd Kick (GK Only) : Good at passing the ball quickly to spring a counter attack. 1-1 GK : Goalkeeper stands up well, hard to beat in one on one situations. PK GK : Goalkeeper is good at saving penalties. Injury : How resistant to injury a player is, A being the best. GOALKEEPERS ------------ Goalkeepers with a high attitude will rush out quickly to narrow the angle. Some of these include Buffon, Barthez, etc. David Seaman is an example of a GK who tries to stay as near to the goal as he can - a low attitude. ================================ 4. MASTER LEAGUE BARGAINS ================================ Success in the Master League can depend on how astute you are in the transfer market, especially on the harder difficulty levels. If you don't have lots of credits to spend, the following is a list of players who are very capable. There are some great players in there, you just gotta find them :). KEY: p - points required to purchase the player m - maintenance points, the player's "wages".
