Thanks for picking up this guide for the magnificent game we know as Smuggler's Run. It's something like a cross between Dukes of Hazzard and a monster truck rally. You will be delivering a variety of things, some explosive, some radioactive, all illegal. Naturally, the authorities will be none too pleased with your activities and will try their best to stop you from delivering your cargo. Also, rival gangs will try to make off with your contraband to get the money for it instead of you. So, you will need some help, which I will gladly provide. Move along, now. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- 2: Revision History Version 1.0 11/9/00 - First Edition *********************************************************************** Version 1.1 11/17/00 - Finished the Forest missions, added some Desert missions, and told when each vehicle is earned. *********************************************************************** Version 1.2 11/25/00 - Large update today! Made a new copyright notice for who may have my guide on their site. Added more missions, and fixed a mistake in the Forest walkthrough. I got the towns Eastwood and Centerville mixed up. But that's been corrected now. *********************************************************************** Version 1.3 12/3/00 - Added the Cheat Codes section! And added the tips presented by Bill Bumgarner. Thank you Bill! *********************************************************************** Version 1.5 12/6/00 - Finished the Desert missions, and have only five more missions to cover! I can see the light at the end of the tunnel now. *********************************************************************** Version 1.6 12/16/00 - Ahhh, the joy of defeating Smuggler's Run and finally completing this guide! Also got rid of the Midnight Club cheat because it is not really a Smuggler's Run code, it is a Midnight Club code. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- 3: Game Rules and other Stuff CONTROLS Steering - move the control pad or the left stick. I'm sure I don't need to say more on this. Accelerate - move the right stick up or press X. Yet another control I don't think needs further explanation. Brake - move the right stick down or press Square. Very useful when traveling through dense forest or those narrow village roads in the Desert course. Reverse - move the right stick down when sitting still or press Triangle. Handy if you're stuck on a tree or a rock. Handbrake - press Circle. The most useful button of all except for steering and accelerating. When going over jumps, tap Circle rapidly to level your tires with the ground so you won't crunch your engine after going over a jump. This difficult game is SO much easier if you get into the habit of using this during every jump. View Map - press R1. You will see a large portion of the course you are driving in. Useful when searching for the next checkpoint, and avoiding accidentally plowing into hillsides after going over jumps you thought had adequate room to land. Rearview - press R2. Allows you to see behind you. Not that useful except for seeing who's eating your (generous helping of) dust. Downshift - press L2. I'm sure you can figure out what this does for your manual transmission. Upshift - press L1. Read above for lame sarcasm. Change camera - press Select. You can choose between the bumper camera, the helicopter camera, or the in-car camera. The helicopter camera is useful for seeing a wider area around you, but the in-car camera is difficult because it's impossible to tell if you are flipped over because the camera doesn't roll around with the car. Pause - press Start. No need to explain this. VEHICLES Dune Buggy - The smallest car in the game. It's relatively fast, but too jumpy and fragile for my tastes. It also drifts a lot in jumps, making it difficult to predict where it will go while airborne. SUV - Good all-around car and one of my favorites. It's relatively tough and has average speed and acceleration. Drifts a bit too much in the air, though. Looks like a Mitsubishi Montero. Trophy Truck - My favorite vehicle for the Smuggler's Mission. Well rounded in all categories. Best sounding engine for any driving game I've played. It looks even cooler when all the breakable parts have fallen off of it, because when it does you are driving just the frame! Looks like a Ford Ranger. Rally car - Highest acceleration, top speed, and handling in the game, but if it gets hit by anything larger than a cardboard box, it takes serious damage. My most hated car of all, because it jerks around like a squirrel and takes jumps like it's caught in a tornado! Experts only. Looks like a Subaru Impreza. Monster Truck - Very entertaining when you feel like tormenting civilian traffic! Lowest speed of all, but is the most heavily-armored vehicle in the game. Can plow through almost anything. The only thing that can destroy it easily is the train in the Forest course. Becomes a 18 wheeler cab when the bed falls off! Looks like a Ford F-150. Military Vehicle - Very cool-looking car! Similar to the Trophy Truck, but has a bit more speed and a bit less handling. Excellent for joyriding. As the name implies, this is the vehicle of choice for the Army. Looks like a Hummer with its roof torn off and replaced by a roll cage. GANGS The Forgotten - your gang. Radio Girl of The Forgotten is the one who is directing you during the missions. Territory is Forest, Desert, and Snow. Gang color is red. Vehicle of choice is your decision. The O'Gradys - your first rival gang. Their vehicles are fairly fast, but aren't too hard to bash away. Most of their vehicles have this cool-looking spoiler attachment. Territory is Forest and Snow. Gang color is bright green. Vehicle of choice is the Trophy Truck. Sierra Cartel - the first rival gang you encounter in the Desert course. They prefer small, fast cars that can drive rings around everything else, and they can manage their speed well. But, because of this, their vehicles are easily pushed around by other cars. All their cars also have a light attachment on the roof. Territory is Desert. Gang color is blue. Vehicle of choice is the Rally Car. A20 - the second rival gang you encounter in the Desert course. They like vehicles which can accelerate and react quickly to their commands, but this is at the expense of top speed and some durability. Another gang that is easily pushed around. Territory is Desert. Gang color is black. Vehicle of choice is the Dune Buggy. Quebecois - the last rival gang you will deal with. They tend to prefer large, tough vehicles to crush things that are in the way, while sacrificing speed. Territory is Snow. Gang color is yellow. Vehicle of choice is the Monster Truck. LAW ENFORCEMENT Border Patrol - the first enforcement "gang" you will have to elude. They prefer well-rounded vehicles like the O'Gradys. Like to travel in packs and swarm you when you're down. Medium steering, medium speed and high level of persistence. Voice sounds annoyed in the Canada courses, but sounds Southern in the Desert course. Territory is Forest, Desert, and Snow. Gang color is white and green. Vehicle of choice is the Military Vehicle. Army - the second level of law enforcement. Unlike the Border Patrol, they prefer to go it alone when chasing you. Have the best steering of the enforcement "gangs," but lowest speed, and a medium persistence level. Voice sounds, well, like an army officer's voice. Territory is Desert. Gang color is olive green. Vehicle of choice is (duh) the Military Vehicle. CIA - the last enforcement "gang" you will encounter. The easiest gang to evade. Sometimes they stick together, other times they try to get you alone. Have the speediest vehicles, but worst handling, and a low persistence level. If a CIA car is in pursuit, more likely he'll crash into a rock than hit you. Voice sounds smart-aleck. Territory is Desert and Snow. Gang color is black. Vehicle of choice is the Rally Car. MAPS AND PLAYFIELD MARKERS Arrows - On the map, red arrows are you and your allies, blue arrows are your rivals, and flashing white arrows are Law Enforcement. In the playfield, the arrow on the top of the screen guides you to the next checkpoint. It will be red if you are going to drop off your contraband, and it will be green if you are going to pick up more contraband. *The arrow doesn't always point in the direction that would be the fastest to take next. The arrow doesn't always point to the next logical target. There are some of my walkthroughs that will ignore the arrow, especially the ones when checkpoints can be hit in any order. Pick up points - On the map, contraband is indicated by a yellow box. The box icon will overlay the arrow of the vehicle that is carrying it. In the playfield, the contraband will be indicated by a single bright green flare. If a vehicle is carrying it, a large arrow will hover over the vehicle. Drop off points - On the map, a red X will show your drop off point, a blue X will show your rivals' drop off point, or if there is no enemy gang, your drop off point will be indicated by a flashing blue X. In the playfield, three red flares indicate your drop-off point, and three blue flares indicate your rivals' drop off point. CONTRABAND Scoring - Contraband could be anything: computer chips, jewels, radioactive containers, etc. That part doesn't really matter. No matter what you have, someone is almost always trying to take it away from you or damage it. Everytime you collide with something, the value of your cargo decreases. No big deal, unless you care about breaking your high score, unlike me. Rivals and Friends - When you drive into the green smoke to pick up the stuff, "CONTRABAND ACQUIRED" will flash across the bottom of the screen. If a rival collides with you, "CONTRABAND LOST" will flash across the bottom of the screen, telling you that the other guy has made off with your loot. Get the loot back by crashing into him. "CONTRABAND SNAGGED" will flash, indicating you have taken it back. You can also give the contraband to another teammate if you want. Collide into them and "CONTRABAND TRANSFERRED" will appear, indicating you have given the goods to your ally, who will now (hopefully) take the loot to the drop off point. You can also get it back by slamming them again. BTW, cops cannot take contraband from you unless a mission requires you to take loot from a police vehicle, and the cop hits you again after taking the loot from him. Outsmarting the rival gangs is easy. When you have the cargo, they don't like to chase you through dense terrain (i.e. rock quarries, forest, etc.) They like to stay on main paths and will avoid this terrain as long as possible until they have to go into it to get you or unless you are nearby. While going to get cargo, they take the path that is the least bumpy or most free of obstacles, not necessarily the fastest way. Take advantage of this by driving through forest, going over cliffs, climbimg up hills, and anything faster than the beaten path. If there is a wide path, (i.e. a canyon) they tend to stay towards the center of the path and will not leave the center unless they must go out of the way to get your cargo. So you should stick to the boundary of a path when possible to avoid rivals. Most of this doesn't work as well with cops for some reason, though. Cheap contraband trick - If you are getting tired of chasing your rivals all over the map and they are still getting the cargo back first, then here is a cheap trick I made around it. Wait at the enemy dropoff point which is the one with blue flares. When they try to deliver the contraband, they may hit you instead of the checkpoint! Now you have the cargo and should be able to easily deliver it to your base since both bases are usually close together. *GENERAL SPEED HINTS - stick to roads/paths wherever possible; top speed is *loads* better - use the handbrake turn to avoid cops and do quick snag-n-go moves. Very helpful. - any time your wheels are off the ground, you are not accelerating. That's bad. - try to skid as little as possible, as skidding loses forward momentum and acceleration - when offroading, choose the lest bumpy paths... follow the curve of the land as much as possible. All items marked with a * were submitted to me by Bill Bumgarner. Thanks Bill! You're in the Thanks section now! ----------------------------------------------------------------------- 4: Walkthrough Here is the main part of my guide which will show you the way through the various missions you will be performing so you can become Forgettable. All the vehicles you will be driving are stamped with your company logo (Hey! What a great idea! Stamping all vehicles with your gang's logo so the police will know EXACTLY who they should chase!) and await you. Choose Smuggler's Mission. You will be greeted by the Mission Menu. Here, you will select your various jobs. After selecting the mission, you then choose your vehicle. After selecting your vehicle, you will be asked what transmission to use. After that, the mission will start. We will begin in Forest, then move to the Desert, and finally finish the game in Snow. When I say I mean it from the large map's perspective i.e. north is up, west is left, south is down, and east is right. FOREST MISSIONS NEW VEHICLES - Buggy, SUV MISSION 1 - Initiation Rites Very simple mission. Drive north to the first two checkpoints, then follow the circle of flares around Eastwood to the finish. Give up now if you actually botch this mission. MISSION 2 - The Forgotten Few Another easy mission. Drive north from the starting point to pick up the contraband in Eastwood. Then, head northeast to the drop off point in the field outside of town. Now drive west to pick up the next piece of contraband near the gas station in Eastwood. Continue west through town and get onto the road that is headed the same way as you. It will take you to the next drop off point and the finish. MISSION 3 - Secrets and Lies This will be your first mission against law enforcement. In this case, it's the Border Patrol. Head east from the church parking lot to the first pick up point. The first cop is hiding behind the ridge to your left, but he likely won't see you since he's facing the wrong way. Continue east till you fly over a big jump. After you land, get onto the highway since it leads to the next drop off point. Continue down the highway to the next pick up point. Here, you will get spotted by a cop. Bolt past him and collect the next piece of contraband. Turn round the corner and you can see a roadblock! Gosh, they're fast! Fortunately, they were too stupid to fill in the little gap in the middle of the road, so you can easily pass through. After passing the roadblock, another cop will see you and will try a head-on ramming attack. Turn left on the road to pass him. Continue to follow the highway to the bridge. The finish is at the end of it. MISSION 4 - Breaking and Exiting Head northwest from the start to pick up the stuff, then cross the bridge. Rather than follow the road, drive over the hill in front of you. You'll now get an impressive view of the valley below. After landing, go onto the railroad tracks and follow them west. When you pass two trees on the left side of the tracks, abandon them and drive west over the bumpy terrain to the red flares on the hill you can see in the distance. Now drive down the other side of the hill and continue west through more bumpy ground and trees. Pick up the contraband in front of the covered bridge, and cross the bridge. Oh no! Another roadblock! This time, turn right into the grass and get back on the railroad tracks. Follow them northwest. When the tracks arrive at a railroad crossing, pull onto the road and head north. Go into the summer camp and cross the finish line. MISSION 5 - Duty Free This will be your first mission to gather up contraband and deliver it before a rival gang can do the same. Your opponents will be the O'Gradys. The locations of all drop off points and and pick up points switch around a lot, so I can't tell you much. I can honestly say, though, that all checkpoints will be in and around Eastwood. Read the Rivals and Friends section in the Game Rules and other Stuff section for more information. MISSION 6 - Race War Your first racing mission. The O'Gradys have challenged you to a race on the road that goes around Eubanks Mountain. Follow the road and pass through the checkpoints. Don't worry about taking the lead until you get to the railroad crossing because the other racers will all slow for some reason. You should easily be able to pass them and finish first after you enter Eastwood. MISSION 7 - Goodies From Above The Border Patrol have shot down a plane. Now you must retrieve all of its cargo and take it to the cargo trucks. Unfortunately, the Border Patrol is actively investigating the area for evidence, so they will be on you at every turn. Drive off the hill you start on and head northeast to Eastwood. Collect the contraband and continue northeast. A cop will give chase in the process. Cross the river by going through the river, and you will arrive at the first cargo truck. Now head southeast to the next pick up. Drive into the river and follow it east until you pass the last of the redwoods. Get out of the river on the left side and drive east across the land. After a few big bumps, you'll see a large hill. Drive over it to fly across the river and land near the next cargo truck. Deliver the goods and head southeast across the river again to pick up more contraband. Now cross the bridge and follow the road until the arrow points straight in the direction your car is going. Leave the road and drive across the rocky terrain until you see the next cargo truck. Now head southeast to the next pick up point. Watch out for those rocks and trees along the way. After collecting the final piece of contraband, follow the road until you see the last checkpoint in the water next to the falls. Cross through the water to it. Mission complete! MISSION 8 - Lost and Found Immediately turn 90 degrees to the right after you start. Drive across the large hill and keep going east to the first pick up point. Now go north and head for the red flares atop the large mountain. Don't worry, your car will be able to easily get up there. Now go northwest across the gently sloping plains. You will come to a snaking dirt track. You can either follow the path as it S-curves continuously, or you can drive across the hills separating each curve. I'll leave it up to you. Eventually, you will find the next piece of contraband. Continue S-curving/hill-jumping until you come to a crossroads. Turn left and climb the hill the arrow is pointing to. After getting down to the other side, dump the contraband near the tunnel at the next checkpoint. Now head southwest until you spot a tunnel opening hidden behind a bunch of trees. Go into the tunnel and follow it all the way to the end. As it turns out, it's a secret passage that dumps you out by going through the waterfall! Not only that, but the finish is dead ahead in the water! Could things get any better? MISSION 9 - The Way South Your second contraband collection race against the O'Gradys. Only this time, the Border Patrol decides to get involved, creating a three-way war! Again, I can't tell you much, except that it takes place in and around Centerville due to the fact of checkpoints jumping around without any pattern. So from now on, I will tell you to refer to the Rivals and Friends section for all rival contraband collection missions. They're all virtually the same anyway. MISSION 10 - Counterfeit Women This mission marks the point where missions will go from being fun to being a chore. First, most missions from now on have a very tight time limit and you only have enough time to make up for one major crash and maybe one minor crash. Secondly, the police are after you almost from the start and will dog you constantly for entire missions, so even the tiniest boo-boo may get you arrested or heavily damaged. OK, here we go. Head southwest to the first pick up point by cutting through the trees. Using the dirt trail will waste too much time. After picking up the cargo, go onto the paved road to the right and turn onto another dirt on the right of the paved road. Follow this trail to the next checkpoint. Then do a U-turn and go back the way you came. After getting back to the pavement, go right. Turn off the road when you can and head east to the pick up point atop the hill. Keep going east to the next checkpoint. The field you cross through is relatively clear, so you can go straight there. Slow down when you enter the woods and hit the next checkpoint. Do a U-turn and go back the way you came. Head back to the paved road with the dirt path we used earlier and you will find another piece of contraband near the turn off. Go through the tunnel and follow the road until you come to a roadblock. Turn left onto another trail. The drop off point is only a little ways south from here. Drive off the trail and up the hill when it curves left. After ascending the hill, you can see the finish near Eastwood dead ahead. Get down the hill, across the bridge, and through the town to the finish. MISSION 11 - DNA or DOA Tough mission here! You have to travel halfway across the stinkin' map, traverse enough bumps and whoops to fill a hundred dirt bike tracks, and with the Border Patrol in hot pursuit every step of the way. Let us enter the torture chamber now. You start in Eastwood. Drive east to the cemetery and pick up the first piece of contraband. Leave the cemetery by driving through the fence, and travel east across more bumpy terrain. When you spy the railroad tracks, get onto the right side of them because a cop is approaching from the tracks in the redwoods will try a head-on ramming attack. After you pass him, continue following the tracks east until you are perpendicular to your first drop-off point. Go over the grassy hill and make the drop. Now go over the eastern hill of this clearing and you will come to a massive drop-off. Fall down the cliff and head for the green flare to the east. Head east some more and you will enter the "desert." Not really since we're in Canada. You will also spot a dirt road, follow it. When it curves off to the right, leave the road and go straight ahead up the hill. You will get onto the same road up there. Follow it until you see the red flares in the small valley, then go straight for them. Yeah, yeah, I know, you should go through the dirt hills, but the road is much easier and safer. Do a U-turn after driving through them. Now go back onto the road you used to get here and you will see an abandoned mine. Drive into in carefully because if you hit the posts on the side or miss it altogether, the police will have you bouncing all over the place until you are arrested. Go through the tunnel and head west to the next pick-up. Do another U-turn and go back east. Watch out for all the cops that followed you here. Go through the mine, and follow the road back east to the valley. Go through it and hit the finish on the other side. MISSION 12 - Radar Troubles Do an about-face right after you start and hit the first radar atop the hill to the southeast. Now turn around and head west over that giant hill to slam the next radar on the other side of it. Then go northwest across the creek and up the mountain. Next, jump down into the valley and head southwest through the valley to the radar atop the hill. Proceed north after trashing that radar. After passing through some trees and a lake, the last radar waits for you on the north shore. MISSION 13 - Bait and Switch This mission requires you to steal a piece of contraband from a police truck heading to town, then you have to take it all the way to the tippy-top of Eubanks Mountain. Begin by heading west across the fields to where the railroad tracks run alongside the highway (I'm sure you know where it is, considering we've passed by it on several missions before.) The police truck should be pulling onto the tracks when you get there. Pursue the truck until you ram it and take the cargo, then go west to Eubanks Mountain which is north of Eastwood. Find the path going up it and take it, being careful to not fall off and looking out for police ambushes. When the side of the mountain goes from the gray rocks to brown dirt, climb up it to skip a few police traps and a shortcut. When you hit the checkpoint, you are done with Forest! *The time on the clock is ****ed misleading. I knew this level would be trouble when it started with 3.5 minutes!!! If you screw up going up the mountain-- fall off, delayed, whatever-- the truck that you snagged the contraband from WILL be an issue. I have had him steal the 'band from me and head off back to the goal. However, he is dumb as a post and will go *straight* to the destination, including smashing into things. The train is usually heading down the track right as you are heading past it to go up the mountain. Stay on the opposite side of the tracks until the last second then cut in front of the train. You can often lose a cop for a few precious seconds on the other side of the train. FOREST COMPLETE!!! NEW VEHICLES - Trophy Truck, Rally Car DESERT MISSIONS MISSION 14 - Packing Heat Go south to the first pick-up point in the canyon. It's straight ahead. After collecting the contraband, you have a choice of paths. You can either go right through the border station, or you can go left and crash through the fence. I prefer right, there may be more cops, but it's a smoother ride and provides a straighter shot into Soroti City. Regardless of your choice, keep going south and through the city gates. Hit the checkpoint in the middle of the town, then leave through the west entrance. After leaving town, head northwest to the next pick-up. After picking up the stuff, go north to the oasis to deliver it. Turn left past the next plateau on the map, then continue north to the dried up ponds for your last pick-up of the mission. Go northeast to the highway. After clearing the border station, go north to the airport where you started the mission to finish. MISSION 15 - Government Issued This will be your first mission against the Army. They are not as persistent as the Border Patrol, but have much better control over their vehicles. Okay, lets get started. Go west up the hill across the oilfield, then drive down onto the paved road on the other side. Your first encounter with the Army is here. Drive past him and through the border passing. Follow the road to the dropoff point. Now head south into the small village for your next piece of cargo. Be careful not to get trapped here between the army trucks and a wall. After exiting the town, keep going south along the dirt path (kinda hard to see). Several Army ambushes later, you will follow the path into another town through a hole in the city wall. Dump the cargo and drive around the large hump of sand. Drive through the hole in the wall back there. The arrow points over the mesa, but it's too steep so circle around it while continuing to go south. When the natural stone wall veers to the right, follow it to stumble upon the next checkpoint. Do a 180 and head east to Soroti city. There is also another barely visible dirt path here to guide you. By now the clock should be runnung out, so quickly get into the city to the finish line. MISSION 16 - Trafficking Offenses This is a contraband race against the Sierra Cartel and with the Army interfering. The Cartel drive super-fast Rally Cars, so use the cheap trick I made in the Rivals and Friends section. The layout includes the oasis, the dried-up oasis, and the town with the crumbling city wall. This mission is a bit tough, but a relief compared to all the other difficult missions you've had recently. Don't forget the Rivals and Friends section for more hints! MISSION 17 - Miscellaneous Bits You begin in Soroti City. Drive west out of the city and follow the dirt trail. When you keep heading west and come to an artificial stone arch, turn right rather than going under it to find the first checkpoint. Go west and the narrow ravins spills out into a place full of sand dunes. If you look near the rocky cliffs on the opposite side of the area, you can see a jeep trail. Follow it north. When the trail comes to a fork, go left and abandon the trail. You will see some MASSIVE sand dunes here. The easiest path through this place is to stick to the far right side of the area near the wall of rock. When you spot the next checkpoint, dump the goods. Now go east to the next checkpoint. There isn't really any clearly defined path here, so if you are lost follow the arrow. Go into the village the arrow points to to find the next checkpoint. Go south on the dirt path to the next city. Do a 180 and go north after tagging the drop off point. Follow the path to the last piece of cargo about midway between the two cities. Next go northwest to the temple dodging boulders and Border Patrol to the finish. MISSION 18 - Red or Dead I HIGHLY recommend you use the Rally Car for this racing mission. Everything else is just too darn slow to keep up with the A20 and Sierra Cartel gangs since almost everyone uses either a Rally Car or a Dune Buggy. You start ath the temple. When the race starts, follow the pack south to the first checkpoint. Right after the checkpoint you may spot a trail leading up the large mountain to your right. Use it because it is a shortcut. After crossing though a small ditch, the trail will dump you in a large canyon. Go down into the very bottom and hit the next checkpoint. Now go as far left as possible near the canyon wall until you see a small ditch with a trail through it. Go into it to hit the next checkpoint. Go up the partially buried stairs and head right to the next checkpoint. After this checkpoint, all that's left is a bumpy strech to the finish in Soroti. My best advice is take the lead early here and don't lose it. If you do get the lead, beware the Army trucks because they tend to go for the pack leader. Good luck! MISSION 19 - Hot Zone The briefing says there are "reports of border patrol, army, and possibly even CIA in the area." Well, all that we will be running from is the CIA, so you can at least be glad of that. They are very bad drivers, so you won't need to care about them much except for the second checkpoint. I'll begin the walkthough now: Go north out the city gate and head north between the two plateaus on your map. You will have your first encounter here with the CIA here. Blast past him and crash through the fence. You should see the green flare near the boulders. Go get the stuff and do a 180 after picking it up. Drive through the border passing and go southeast on the dirt trail. In a bit you will see a mesa with your path leading to the right of it. Instead go left and follow the path there. It will lead you southward into a pit full of strange rock formations. At the left end (your left) of the pit is the second checkpoint. Hit it and do a 180 and go back the way you came. Beware of the CIA cars that have followed you here on the way back. Go north when you hit the wide open plain again. Drive past the right side of the mesa you see ahead. Crash through the barbed wire fence and pass through the small opening in the canyon wall. You are now at the oilfield. Drive north through the oilfield and pick up the contraband at the airport runway. Go west back through the oilfield and climb over the hill with the windmills. Follow the highway. When the highway ends, hit the jeep trail to the right. You will see the next checkpoint in the dried up oasis. Hit it, then go southwest to the next pick up point. The stuff is hidden on top of that small mesa that has a path leading up it. Drive down the other side of the mesa, and go southwest, taking the rightmost path through the mesas. When you see the power poles, drive under them and you will see a slightly camoflagued jeep trail behind them. Take this path. Eventually, the path will come to a large jump and a VERY, VERY, BIG pit. Take the jump and you will (hopefully) land on the other side where the finish is waiting. Whew, that was a long one! BTW, the last checkpoint of this level has my vote for most cleverly hidden checkpoint in the game. MISSION 20 - Viva La Revolution Real easy here. This is your first and last contraband race against the A20's. Use the cheap trick I mentioned about sticking around the opponent's base, and also refer to the Rivals and Friends section. The layout includes the airfield, oilfield, Soroti City, and the oasis. MISSION 21 - Selling Your Soul Hahahahaha! This mission is even easier than some FOREST missions! (ahem, DNA or DOA!) This is a contraband race that has a new twist: there is now a group of cargo items instead of one item that everyone has to squabble over. You can only take one item, and your base will stay in the same place for the whole level. You will be against the Cartel, and combat will be around the temple. This level is a breeze, but the most difficult desert mission is just around the corner, so don't get too relaxed. Use the Rivals and Friends section for more hints. MISSION 22 - Don't Listen Now Remember a long time ago when we destroyed the radars in Radar Troubles? Well, this mission is very much the same, only even harder! There are more posts, more cops, and more traveling distance. Let's go. First, ignore the arrow and turn left to face south. Go south to the first listening post and destroy it. Still ignoring the arrow, continue south along the canyon to the next listening post near the canyon's left wall For reference, you will pass a border crossing and the oasis on the way there. The arrow has FINALLY decided to point in your direction. Keep heading south to Soroti City. The listening post is in the ditch surrounding the city. Hit it and do a 180. Now go northwest to the listening post in the city with the crumbling wall. Go into the city and find the post hidden among the buildings. Now leave the city out the northern "gate" and immediately turn left. You will see a jeep trail running next to the wall. Follow it west until you have passed through the cut in the mesa. Now climb over the sand dunes west and you will fall down off a cliff near the next listening post. Sorry but I can't provide a distinct path for the area because it has no landmarks. After totalling another post, drive northwest around a mesa on its northern side. After passing it, drive south behind it to discover another listening post. Destroy it and then go back the way you came until you have left the mesa. Drive northeast across the sand dunes and rocky fields to the highway. Destroy the listening post along the way, and after nearing the border passing, turn right to find and destroy the last post. MISSION 23 - Grab and Go This is another mission for which I would recommend the Rally Car. You have to retrieve an item from a CIA truck which is a very fast Military Vehicle. You will start in the small room atop the temple. Drive down the stairs and into the field below. Your quarry is heading south so follow him. He follows the same route as the "Red or Dead" mission. Since it's a CIA agent driving the car, he will wreck a few times along the way. The biggest wreck he makes is at the buried ancient staircase. I'll assume you got him there or somewhere earlier. Drive up the stairs and keep following the same route as the race until you get to Soroti. Turn north from there and keep going north. On your map you can see a large plateau with the oasis on the west side and nothing on the east side. Go north on the east side because there are several CIA cars waiting for you past the oasis. Keep going north and you will arrive at the oilfield. Here, the CIA will see you, but the finish is dead ahead at the airport with no large obstacles in your way. Dump the stuff at the cargo plane and you are done. MISSION 24 - Christmas Bonus Ah, the last desert mission! And man is it tough! The first time I beat this level, I had only 0.4 second left on the clock! Here we go: Drive east from the temple through the rock quarry to the first checkpoint. Proceed southeast from there across sand dunes, rocks, etc. and past some mesas. Next, drive by the oasis. After you clear the mesa next to the oasis, go east to the edge of the map. Remember where the second checkpoint was in the mission "Hot Zone?" The drop off point for this mission is at the same spot. But this time you must be more careful because the Border Patrol are much better drivers than the CIA. Go around the mesa near the edge of the map and go south to the drop off point in the rock pit. After tagging the checkpoint, do a 180 and go back the way you came. Watch out for cops as they will try for head-on ramming. When you have hit open air again, go south then west around the side of the large mesa to the south but do not enter the canyon going north. After proceeding west some more, go around the next mesa to the canyon on the west side of it(the one with the oasis in it). Pick up the next item floating in the water. Turn west and enter the city with the crumbling wall through the east gate. There is a path next to the city wall to help you find it by the way. After entering the city, leave through the northern gate and follow the jeep trail to the immediate left of it. After passing through a large road cut, drive straight over the large sand dunes to the next checkpoint. Now go north across rocks and dunes to the temple. When you get to the temple, drive around to its north side and pick up the dynamite. Now, you can also see a tunnel entrance back here. Enter it to find the drop off point. My vote for easiest dropoff in the game. You can now see a stone road leading to another tunnel. Follow this stone road through more hidden places and tunnels. Eventually, you will pop out next to the dried up oasis. Go west to the highway and follow it to the hill with the windmills. Leave the highway and go across this hill and west through the oilfield to the finish at the airport. Time will most likely be running short at this point. You will most likely be shouting "GOGOGOFASTER!!!" right now as well. Get to the plane quick! DESERT COMPLETE!!! NEW VEHICLES - Monster Truck, Military Vehicle SNOW MISSIONS MISSION 25 - Home Comforts Okay, first the good news. We have now reached the fabled winter wonderland simply known as Snow! And we finally have all vehicles too! Life is good, isn't it? Well now get ready for the bad news. The time limits are getting even tighter, law enforcement is even more aggressive than in the desert, plus the white snow camoflagues the Border Patrol! You will be arrested many, many times on these missions before you even complete one! Okay, time for your first drive through the molten pits in the depths of the underworld! First, drive west following the railroad tracks. When it arrives at a crossing, jump onto the paved road and follow it northwest to the first pickup. Now go north and cut through Centerville. Continue north up the hill to the drop off. Okay, do a 180 and go south back down the hill and to Centerville. When you hit town, go southwest to the next checkpoint near the power lines. After tagging it, drive west over the cliff and down to the river. If you follow the frozen river, it will take you to the next drop off point. Hit it and continue west along the river to another checkpoint across the ice from the redwoods. Now go north through the ravine that is just to the right of the checkpoint. Ignore the road you see and just keep going north through the trees and other crud. The finsih line is to the northeast of the summer camp. Congrats, you beat the first snow mission! MISSION 26 - Santa's Little Hinderer Start off by going across the railroad bridge to the north, then travel northeast to the first checkpoint on the left side of the railroad tracks. See Mount Eubanks over there? Go north and travel around on the east side of the mountain. Eventually, you will come to the railroad tunnel. Enter it and follow the tracks until you get past the road tunnel overpass and the ravine following it. Now turn left and go north to the next checkpoint. After tagging that checkpoint, go southeast across the hills near the last checkpoint. For reference, you can see some more railroad tracks. They go right past the next pickup. Now get the stuff and go straight over the hill behind the checkpoint. Drop down on the east side of the hill and you may see a paved road. Follow it east and you will wind up at the next checkpoint The next checkpoint is close to the covered bridge and a railroad bridge for more reference. Turn west and travel across more bumpy terrain to the next checkpoint. Do a 180 after tagging the checkpoint and go east to find the river. Actually, it finds you more than you find it because you will drive over a massive cliff and land near the frozen waterfall. Cross the ice and take the paved road across from it to the finish near the railroad tracks. Good job! MISSION 27 - Enjoying the Craic This mission is a cakewalk compared to all the crud you've been taking from the Border Patrol recently. You are against your old rivals the O'Gradys in a contraband race, with the Border Patrol mixing things up. This mission will take place around the "desert" from DNA or DOA, only it now has a fresh blanket of snow. The O'Gradys are as lousy as always, so you will have an easy time here. Just use the cheap base guarding trick and occasionally help your friends and you'll be fine. MISSION 28 - Hunter Gatherer One of the shorter and simpler missions you have encountered for some time. Go south to the ravine to pick up the first piece of contraband in the ravine. Then keep going south to the redwood forest across the river from you. After hitting the checkpoint there, do a 180 and follow the highway to the east to the checkpoint on the river's ice. Now simply follow the frozen river east to the next checkpoint, then do a 180 after tagging it. Now follow the river west to the checkpoint near the bridge with the four lane road and the hut surrounded by a fence. Told you this mission was short and simple. MISSION 29 - Frenchies Fried Lucky you. You get another easy contraband race! This time it's you versus the Quebecois, your last rival gang to contend with. Also the CIA will be playing peace-keeper, though doing a bad job of it. The mission is set around the large lake, the frozen waterfall, and the small stream beneath it. Resort to the cheap base-guarding trick while occasionally taking the cargo yourself and it'll be over in no time. MISSION 30 - Immoral Minority Hooray! A return to the difficult, drawn out missions that we should be playing now! Aren't you happy? First, go west past Centerville and over the bridge. Now on the other side of the stream, climb northwest up the hill to the first drop-off point, which a cop is right next to (REEEEEAL SMART, GORDON!). After tagging the checkpoint, go west past some roads and hills to the big lake. Drive across it for a shortcut. You will eventually reach the next checkpoint atop a snow heap. After tagging it, do a 180 and try not to go over the opposite side of the hill, or you may have to fight uphill against a swarm of cops. Go east past some houses, roads, and the stream. The checkpoint is atop a rocky hill near the lake. After tagging it, go southeast towards the river and get in the southernmost branch. Drive down it to the checkpoint near the power lines. You will probably have to drive around the cliff it is perched on, if you don't have enough speed to drive up the slope. Now do a 180 after tagging it and go back to the river. Drive west again using the southernmost branch, and you will find the next pickup point at one of the places where the river splits. Continue west along the river and you will spot the finish on the southern side of the river. Leave the river and go to it to complete the level. MISSION 31 - Like Candy From a Baby I warn you now: this is the last easy mission in the game. It is your last contraband race against the Quebecois around Mount Eubanks and the surrounding hills, with the Border Patrol playing referee This one is harder than the rest, considering every checkpoint is separated by a maze of mountains, trees, and other crud. Also, the Quebecois always seem to know the fastest way around the place! The cheap contraband trick doesn't work well here either, because the contraband is often in easier reach than the bases. So, for once, don't use that strategy and go after the stuff yourself. Good luck! MISSION 32 - Big Mistake If the title isn't enough to clue you in, then I will say to you that this is the second hardest mission in the game! I only won this last racing mission because by some freak accident, all the leading cars made big driving errors and wrecked into trees and stuff. Don't use the Rally Car, if you read its description, it says it is a "desert racer". Sand and snow are not the same things. Not snow, "desert", got that? Good. Take the Military Vehicle instead. OK, lets go. First, go east to tag the first checkpoint out in the river. Then, get up on the highway where it is close to the shore, not at the steep slope where your opponents get on. Follow the highway east for a short time and leap into the river at the spot where the other cars jump off. Go east on the river for a bit to the second checkpoint. This one is hard to hit because you are just exiting a corner and driving on ice. Manage as best as you can, then drive up the right shore and onto the paved road. Drive east on it, and then go onto the jeep trail when it comes up a moment later. Follow it up the hill to the third checkpoint. Now go southeast down through the basin, and over the hill on the other side. You will see the trail, but this time shortcut across the plain alongside it to the fourth checkpoint. Now go east across all the bumps instead of taking the trail cuz it wastes too much time. You will come to the valley, drive through it and to the finish near the oil tanks and power cables. Hopefully the bug I mentioned earlier will set in and allow you to slip into first at some point in the race. MISSION 33 - Repo Man Blues OK, THIS MISSION SEPARATES THE MEN FROM THE BOYS!!! I recommend you use the SUV here, since it has high stability, and the fact CIA will be banging you everywhere. Here we go. First, drop down off the cliff you begin on and get on the dirt trail. Follow it west over the mountain and down to the lake. Get on the paved road after the trail ends and follow it west around the lake. I know, I know, but the lake is not a shortcut. You'll probably waste more time trying to climb out of it when it is time to leave than if you stuck to the road. When you reach the road intersection, leave the road and drive southwest over the hills, trees, etc. to the first checkpoint. Hit it and go southeast. You can see two valleys between big hills. Take the one on the left because the right one leads to a roadblock. Now go (almost) directly south in the direction of the arrow. You will arrive at the river. Drive across it to find the dropoff near the redwood forest. After tagging it, drive east on the river. When you see the green smoke, leave the river and head for it. Tag the checkpoint and do a 180. Go northwest up the hill with the redwoods. Sorry, but there isn't a distinct path I can point out. I can say that you should try to stay as high up on the hill as possible until you reach the peak. Jump from the peak to the road. Follow it northwest for a moment, and then continue northwest over the hill when the road curves to the left. Use the flatest path possible in this area. You will find the next checkpoint in a valley you jump down into. Now go northwest on the dirt path, and then east on the paved road and the tunnel around the hill you jumped over. Watch out for the roadblock when you exit the tunnel. After evading the roadblock, go east across the gently rolling hills to the next checkpoint. Do a 180 and drive back to the tunnel. Follow the road east, then south to find the finish. The road may be slower, but its a heck of a lot easier than trying to cross the Rockies with the CIA kicking your rear end everywhere. MISSION 34 - Cheaters Never Prosper We have at long last arrived at the last mission, plus the worst mission is behind us now. I recommend the SUV here. You are immediately under pursuit the minute the mission begins. Go southeast down the hill, and hit the checkpoint without slowing down. You will fly across the bridge below and mabye the stream. Follow the stream for a bit, then go southwest across the hills and through the river's branches. After arriving at the other side, drive southwest through the small forest. See the cliff up ahead? There is a spot where you can climb up it easily. Go up that spot, then drive west to the next checkpoint. After tagging it, go northwest to the concrete bridge near the next checkpoint. Drive over the bridge and tag the checkpoint. Now follow the road north to the big lake. Watch out for two roadblocks along the way. When you near the lake, drive to the checkpoint in the middle of it and tag it. Do a 180 and go south in the stream. When the frozen falls come up, drive over them to land next to another checkpoint. Hit it and take the straightest path possible to the checkpoint that is west of you. I really mean straight, even if you have to climb up steep slopes and jump back down again. This checkpoint has the tightest time limit in the game, so you must be fast. After hitting it in the river, go southwest to the next checkpoint in Eastwood. After hitting it, do a 180 and head north across the bridge and past the roadblock. Congratulations! You have reached the final stretch of Smuggler's Run! And you're not going to get arrested now, are you? Not now that you are so close. Drive north on the jeep trail near the railroad tracks to Mount Eubanks. Once there, start up the spiral trail. Try to stay as close as possible to the cliff faces and beware the police who will try to ram you off the cliff. Hopefully, they might fall off themselves. Eventually you will reach the top where the last checkpoint in the game is. Hit it and rejoice for you have defeated a difficult game! CONGRATULATIONS! YOU HAVE DEFEATED SMUGGLER'S RUN! ----------------------------------------------------------------------- 5: Cheat Codes I got these off of www.videogames.com. To use every code (except the Midnight Club one) pause the game and press these buttons. Invisibility - R1, L1, L1, R2, L1, L1, L2 Yeah, yeah, I know. You're thinking this code will make you invisible to the police. Well, actually, it's the other way around. You become invisible to yourself, and the police can still see you and arrest you. Sorry. Lighter Cars - L1, R1, R1, L2, R2, R2 Want to know what it would be like to drive around on the moon? Well, this code provides the feeling of that experience. No Gravity - R1, R2, R1, R2, Up, Up, Up Well, actually, you still have gravity, but civilian traffic doesn't. If you hit a civilian car in this mode, it will literally fly across the level. Hit a civilian into the redwood forest in forest and watch him bounce off the trees like a ping-pong ball! Increase time warp - R1, L1, L2, R2, Right, Right, Right This code speeds up time and can be entered numerous times for various degrees of speed from simply quick, to the speed of light. Decrease time warp - R2, L2, L1, R1, Left, Left, Left This code does the opposite of the one above. Every thing will move very slowly...this will become your favorite code if you loved the Matrix. It can also be entered multiple times for various effects. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- 6: Thanks - Thanks to myself because if it wasn't for me, this FAQ wouldn't exist! - Thanks to Bill Bumgarner for the various clues on some of the Forest missions and the speed hints! - Thanks to my dad for giving me jobs to do to pay for my Playstation 2 and this game! - Thanks to Rockstar Games!
