REVISION HISTORY ============================================================================== Version 1.0 [9/15/2002] I have seen all the rooms and all the monsters. I have collected every item on the list. I have gone through each zone over and over again to re-check everything. I have played both the Japanese and the English version. Still, there may be something I don't know about. For a first release, this FAQ contains all the info you need to go through the game, and still some. But there's a lot of people who have still to play the game. So, if you find anything you may think should be added, please let me know. After all, nothing's perfect. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Version 1.0a [9/20/2002] Skyknight3_1 solved the mystery about Hint Card 2 and 6. STORY ============================================================================== (From in-game introduction) Fifty years have passed since Simon Belmont vanquished the curse of Dracula. Fate has dictated that Juste Belmont, blood descendant of the Belmont Family, hunt for the relics of Dracula. One day, Juste's best friend, Maxim, who had set out on a training expedition two years earlier, returned unexpectedly... his body covered with wounds. He informs Juste that Lydie, a childhood friend whom they both deeply care about, has been kidnapped. Maxim has completely lost his memory of his time training away from home, and only has vague images of the kidnapping. Ignoring his bodily injuries, Maxim leads Juste to the place where he believes Lydie is being held captive. Passing through thick fog, the two men happen on a castle undocumented on any map. Could this be the fabled Dracula's castle? Standing solemnly in the night, this forbidding castle welcomes its unexpected guests as the moonlight shines upon it... ============================================================================== 3. CONTROLS ============================================================================== In the game, you take control of Juste Belmont. Here's a list of the default commands. D-Pad: moves Juste around. Press B to duck. A Button: jump. If Juste is on a platform he can pass through, press A+Down to drop through the platform. Double-press to double jump (only if you have the appropriate relic). If you are on solid ground, press A+Down to slide. This can hurt enemies weaker than Juste. B Button: attack with Juste's whip. Hold and move the D-Pad to swing the whip around. Press B+Down after a double jump to jump kick. Press B+Up to use a subweapon or a spell. L Button - R Button: Juste dashes left or right according to the button pressed. If you press the button opposite the direction Juste is facing, he will rapidly reel backwards. Press L+Up or R+Up to switch between the available Spellbooks. ============================================================================== 4. THE SPELL FUSION SYSTEM ============================================================================== The Spell Fusion system is a new game system that takes the place of the rather obscure DSS system of _Circle of the Moon_. It's quite simple to master: scattered throughout the castle are 5 Spellbooks, each with its own elemental/magical powers. When a Spellbook is activated, whenever you use a subweapon, a magical attack will take place, and it will consume your MP instead of your hearts. This is a list of the 6 subweapons, and their effects: Axe: Juste throws the axe in a parabolic trajectory. Hearts used: 4 Cross: the Cross attacks in a straight line ahead of Juste, and after covering some ground it comes back like a boomerang. Hearts used: 5 Holy Water: sweeps the entire floor ahead of Juste. Hearts used: 3 Holy Book: the Holy Book rotates around Juste for a while. Hearts used: 3 Knife: Juste throws the Knife straight ahead. Hearts used: 1 Sacred Fist: Juste dashes and performs a multiple punching attack, similar to Chun Li's Hundred Kicks. Hearts used: 6 These are the attacks that you will be able to perform when your Spellbooks are not activated (they are known as "unfused" subweapon attacks). However, the Spell Fusion system allows you to perform as much as 31 more different attacks, one for every Spellbook/subweapon combination, plus one secret spell that can only be performed when you have no subweapons with you. Note that the power of spells is based on your Int points, and not on your Str points. The following is a list of all the spells you can use, arranged by element. __________ ___/Ice Spells\_______________________________________________________________ ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Axe: Ice Meteor A big ice meteor falls on the enemy from upwards. MP used: 20 Cross: Ice Cross A large ice cross follows you around for a while, shooting icicles at the enemies. MP used: 30 Holy Book: Icy Fire Icy flames sweep the entire floor. MP used: 30 Holy Water: Ice Shell Icicles appear around Juste, then converge to form three huge ice balls where the enemy is standing. MP used: 40 Knife: Ice Knives A stream of icy-trailed knives are released from Juste's hand, damaging anything in front of him. MP used: 30 Sacred Fist: Ice Charge Juste performs a dash attack with a big wedge of ice coming out of his hand. MP used: 30 ___________ ___/Fire Spells\______________________________________________________________ ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Axe: Twin Fire Fragons Two flaming dragons curl around the enemy. MP used: 70 Cross: Fire Cross A flaming cross appears. When you press B, the cross will start spinning and will emit flames before disappearing. It'll also disappear if you leave the room. MP used: 50 Holy Book: Flame Tornado A tornado of flames engulfs the enemy. MP used: 50 Holy Water: Fireball Juste throws a fireball. MP used: 40 Knife: Bouncing Fireball Knives appear all around Juste, then a bouncing fireball is released in the direction Juste is facing. If you press B along with all the directions on the D-Pad while the knives are still visible, a fireball will be released for each of the directions you pressed. MP used: 60 Sacred Fist: Fireballs Juste reels backwards as he shoots four fireballs. MP used: 50 ___________ ___/Wind Spells\______________________________________________________________ ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Axe: Axe Barrier An axe rotates around Juste. MP used: 60 Cross: Cross Crash Juste is enveloped in a pillar light while many giant crosses hit the enemies. MP used: 100 ============================================================================== 5. WALKTHROUGH ============================================================================== A note before you read: this walkthrough contains lots of backtracking. I have made it this way so to help you collect a lot of useful items before you actually have to visit the places where they're hidden. And in the end, collecting them earlier saves you a lot of backtracking later, in the final stages of the game. Whatever the road you choose, you'll have to retrace your steps sooner or later, so I decided it to be sooner. If you don't want to do so, simply skip the sections where you'd have to backtrack, and go on with the walkthrough. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ The game begins outside the castle. Maxim and Juste will have a brief dialogue, then they will split up. As Juste, proceed to the right. Soon you'll come to an obstacle. Jump past it, and soon thereafter it will give you a nasty surprise. Just stay on the right side of the screen until you reach the castle's bridge, and cross it. After a brief scene, you can enter the castle. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ +--------------+ | ENTRANCE (A) | +--------------+ Items: Big Mana Prism Heart Max Up Leather Armor Leather Boots Life Max Up Magical Armor Platinum Tip Potion (2) Soul Orb Enemies: Bat, Zombie, Skeleton, Armor Knight Go ahead, whipping candles to get some hearts. When you reach a dead end, whip the pillar to break it and create a passage. Proceed to the right to the next corridor, and kill some Zombies to gain some EXP. Jump down into the passage in the floor to find a [Life Max Up]. Now go back up and to the left, and take the passage in the ceiling in this same room. You'll find a pair of [Leather Boots], and in the room to the far right you can recover the [Soul Orb]. Now go back down and to the first corridor, and take the upper exit. Get the [Leather Armor] on the right, then proceed. In the next hall, grab the [Potion] and go up until the road splits into two branches. Go right and up to find another [Potion], then get to the exit. To the left is the first Save Point. Take the first high exit you find to recover a [Heart Max Up], then go back down and go right to the next area. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ +--------------------------------------------+ | MARBLE CORRIDOR (A) & ROOM OF ILLUSION (A) | +--------------------------------------------+ Items: Anti-venom (2) Castle Map 1 Fairy Journal Fancy Bandana Fire Book Heart Max Up (4) Ice Book Leather Gloves Life Max Up Lucky Charm Potion (2) Red Stone Summer Clothes Vlad's Ring Enemies: Bat, Medusa Head, Skeleton, Armor Knight, Fleaman, Bone Soldier, Victory Armor Go right and in the next room you'll have a brief encounter with Death. After that, go ahead and collect the [Castle Map 1], then take the exit in the floor. Go down to get a [Potion], then go left into the Room of Illusion. Defeat the Lizard Men and get the [Life Max Up], and go right to find the [Fancy Bandana] in the other room. Then, go back up and to the upper-left exit. Jump on the platforms ahead and push the crate to the right and down, then push it to the left to use it to reach the top of the wall. Go to the upper-left exit, and in the next room you'll find the [Ice Book] and a [Heart Max Up]. Now return to the room past Death, and go straight right and to the upper- right exit. Proceed down to the next room, where you'll take the ceiling exit to reach a Save Room to your left in the next corridor. Save, then get out and go right to the end of the corridor, where you'll find some [Leather Gloves]. Now go back to the Save Room entrance and down, and to the right to face the first Boss battle. ******************* * BOSS: Giant Bat * ****************************************************************************** After a spectacular introduction, the real battle begins. The Bat can attack you in two ways: he'll either spit fireballs at you (you can destroy them), or he'll wrap himself up in his wings and perform a drill dive towards you, which you can avoid by moving away. When you hit him three times in a row, he'll split up into many bats and teleport to another location (don't worry, the bats can't hurt you). He'll fly quite high for most of the time, so you can jump and whip from the ground without being hit. Just whip him until he's gone. At that point, get the energy sphere and proceed to the right. ****************************************************************************** Search the upper-right corner of this room for the [Red Stone], then take the exit in the floor. Skip the rooms on the right for now, as they hide some important items that you can't collect just now. So, go down and collect the [Fairy Journal] before you continue to the next area. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ +---------------------+ | THE WAILING WAY (A) | +---------------------+ Items: Drumstick Fancy Clothes Heart Max Up Life Max Up Logoth's Ring Mana Prism Monster Tome Potion Silk Cloak Enemies: Bat, Ghost, Bone Pillar, Large Ghost, Rock Armor, Lizard Man Go past the first room, and in the next one, take the first exit on the right to find the [Monster Tome]. Now go back and proceed to the left. When you see a niche in the ceiling, climb up there to get a [Mana Prism]. Ignore the nearby exit and continue down this hall until the lower exit. Go past the room below and you'll reach a new area. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ +-----------------------------+ | SHRINE OF THE APOSTATES (A) | +-----------------------------+ Items: Drumstick Energy Circle Life Max Up (2) Lizard Tail Opal Potion Enemies: Bone Pillar, Rock Armor, White Dragon, Lizard Man, Victory Armor A [Potion] is waiting for you at the end of the first corridor. Go down, then reach the leftmost exit of the next room, and once below, go left and through the exit. Get past the next room and travel to the left end of the corridor to find a [Life Max Up] guarded by a White Dragon. Get it, then go back and through the exit in the floor. Go left and you'll have a brief meeting with Maxim. After that, go right and save at the Save Room, then go through the blue flashing door at the far left. ********************** * BOSS: Living Armor * ****************************************************************************** A splendid room like this is wasted for such an easy battle. However, this also means that you'll get to worry less about the battle and more about your surroundings ^_^. The Living Armor can only attack you by walking towards you and performing some ample sword attacks. All you have to do is stay on the ground and keep whipping - if you're fast enough, you'll make enough damage to force the Armor to step back. Just retreat a little when it goes with the sword and you'll make just fine. Use a spell to finish the job faster. ****************************************************************************** Enter the next room to collect the [Lizard Tail], and press the switch on the floor to open the path back to the Entrance. However, now that you can slide, I suggest that you go back to the upper corridor and go as far to the right as you can. This way, you'll find a [Life Max Up]. Then, go up and explore the corridors there for an [Opal], a [Drumstick], and the [Energy Circle] for your whip. Next, go to the Save Room before the Boss room in the Marble Corridor and go up and right to find the [Fire Book] and the [Summer Clothes]. To go on with your quest, return to the Room of Illusion and go right. Follow the passage until the end, slide down the wall, get the [Heart Max Up], and enter the room. Inside you'll find a [Lucky Charm], and a teleporter. Use it to reach a totally new place. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ +---------------------+ | CASTLE TREASURY (B) | +---------------------+ Items: Chair Cloth Tunic Heart Max Up (2) Life Max Up Padded Armor Potion Sun Armor Uncurse Potion Wristband Enemies: Zombie, Skeleton, Bone Soldier, Ghost, Ectoplasm, Skeleton Blaze, Peeping Eye, Skeleton Flail, Skeleton Rib, Gate Guarder, Bomber Armor, Feather Demon, White Dragon Lv3 After the first corridor, you'll find a [Potion]. Pick it up and proceed upwards, and at the top, go left. Drop down and defeat the Feather Demon to get a [Life Max Up], then go back upwards and go left. In the next room, get the [Wristband] and the [Uncurse Potion] and move on downwards. Go left to get a [Heart Max Up], then use the Save Room on the right before you go back to the vertical room and take the door leading right. Immediately drop to the room below. Here you'll notice that the passage leading right is blocked. How can you open up the passage? Hmmm... Well, it isn't that hard, actually. You see that Gate Guarder up there? Well, he acts exactly like the Living Armor boss. Keep on whipping it and it'll eventually fall backwards, stumble down the stairs, and clear up the pile of rocks. To the right is the first shop. After you're done with the Merchant, go back up and proceed to the right. When you reach the opening in the ceiling, go up. At the end of this room there's a [Cloth Tunic]. Equip it, then go back down and go right, then down. Go all the way left to find the [Chair], then take the exit in the floor. Now, in the next corridor, take the first exit you find by dropping through the hole in the floor. If you go all the way down, you'll end up in Juste's Room, which is a room that Juste can fill with all the furniture he'll find in the castle. However, you only have a Chair, so ignore this room for now. Instead, take the first door left and proceed to the Skeleton Cave. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ +-------------------+ | SKELETON CAVE (B) | +-------------------+ Items: Ankle Guards Bullet Tip Heart Max Up Leather Cap Life Max Up Potion Side Table Stuffed Stag Summoning Tome Sylph Feather Wizard's Urn Enemies: Skeleton, Bone Soldier, Bone Pillar, Big Skeleton, Flying Bone, Skeleton Flail, Skeleton Spear, Red Skeleton, Skeleton Rib, Bone Thrower, Skeleton Ape, Skeleton Spider After the entry shaft, immediately take the left exit. Follow the upper passage to find a [Side Table], then get in front of the giant skull and whip it to create a passage. Go to the next room, and when you get to a couple of posts holding a giant skull in place, whip them to make the skull fall. At the top of the room is a [Stuffed Stag]. Now go left. Beware the giant swinging blade in this room. Wait for it to reach the far left, then run and slide under it. Go ahead and you'll meet Maxim, who'll act quite strangely. Then, continue to the left until you reach the Save Room. Save and keep going and eventually you'll reach the Boss lair. ********************* * BOSS: Skull Knight* ****************************************************************************** This enemy attacks in different patterns. Initially, he'll try to hit you with his sword, which you can avoid by getting away from him. He can also jump towards you. He can defend himself with his shield, and if you continuously attack him, he'll reel backwards a bit so that you'll have more room behind you. After some hits, he'll lose his sword and shield and prepare for a new pattern. He can still jump, but now he has a very dangerous dash attack. He performs it by crouching and flashing, then he disappears and reappears next to you. To avoid this, get on one of the platforms at the edges of the room, and keep attacking until he's ready for the third and final round. During the final round, when the Skull Knight stops, he'll release a powerful beam that he'll shoot straight ahead. Use the platforms here too to find shelter, and beware of his jumps, which are now very low and quick. Keep whipping until he's defeated. ****************************************************************************** In the room on the left is a precious relic, the [Sylph Feather]. With this item you can now explore many areas you previously couldn't reach. For starters, go to the room before the Boss room and take the exit in the ceiling. Go right to find a [Life Max Up] at the end of the passage. Now go all the way left and past the shaft to a big room. Hit the poles to make the rocks fall, and climb all the way up to collect the [Leather Cap]. Now, return to the last Save Room. Go back until you are past the room with the Skeleton Spears, then go right and along the corridor. Explore the room to find some [Ankle Guards] and a [Potion], and keep going. In the lower corridor, go right and to the next room, at the top of which is a [Heart Max Up]. Now return to the crossroads where you could turn down to Juste's Room, and head back up and to the right. Continue upwards and you'll reach a room with a [Heart Max Up] and a [Padded Armor]. Keep going upwards and you'll reach a new area. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ +----------------------+ | CASTLE TOP FLOOR (B) | +----------------------+ Items: Heart Max Up High Potion Kaiser Mail Life Max Up Medicine Jar (2) Mystical Robe Potion Wind Book Wine Glass Enemies: Ectoplasm, Skeleton Blaze, Big Skeleton, Skeleton Spear, Bone Thrower, Disc Armor Go to the top of the room and save in the Save Room to the left, then go straight right and through the flashing blue door. ****************** * BOSS: Minotaur * ****************************************************************************** The Minotaur is huge, but easy to defeat. Watch out for the signals he gives before he performs an attack. If he raises his alabard, he'll make a frontal attack like the Skull Knight before him. Reel backwards to avoid it. If he swirls his alabard above his head, duck to avoid the swirling alabard that'll be thrown like a boomerang. If the Minotaur roars, get on a platform and be prepared to jump when he'll come dashing at you. After a dash, the Minotaur will be stuck in the wall for a while and you'll be able to whack him without worries ^_^. Watch out though, because when the monster gets free, he'll jump backwards and will hit you if you're close. If you whip the Minotaur for enough damage, he'll make a little jump backwards. Hit him until he's dead. ****************************************************************************** Your reward for beating the Minotaur is a [Life Max Up] and the [Wind Book]. Now get back to the elevator room and continue upwards. Go right to find a [High Potion], then proceed. In the next hall there's a side room on the right where you can meet the Merchant, but only if you have an even number of hearts. Go up still and as soon as you enter the next hall, you'll find a [Potion]. You can't go past the Save Room at the end of the corridor, so go back once more to the crossroads that leads to Juste's Room, and this time, take the right door. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ +---------------------+ | LUMINOUS CAVERN (B) | +---------------------+ Items: Elixir Heart Max Up High Potion Life Max Up Mana Prism Potion Sage Statue Silver Dishes Strange Mirror Tourquoise Uncurse Potion Walk Armor Yellow Stone Enemies: Bat, Tiny Slime, Slime, Ghost, Bone Pillar, Ectoplasm, Bone Thrower, Skeleton Ape, Scarecrow, Man-Eater, Axe Armor, Witch, Siren, Bomber Armor When you get to the corridor with the Witches, take the first upper exit and get to the top of the room to find a [Turquoise]. Go back down and continue right, past the Save Point, and explore the upper parts of the room to find a [Sage Statue] and a [Mana Prism]. Take note that the upper-left exit is blocked by a stone wall. Now take the exit on the right and explore the room to find a [Potion] and an [Uncurse Potion]. Go back to the room past the Save Point, and take the lower exit. Go left and down, then right. In the following room you'll find the [Silver Dishes]. Go on still, and in the next hall push the crate right, then all the way to the bottom of the room. Place it on the switch on the floor to open the way to a [Life Max Up]. To the far right, the Merchant can be found if your experience level is an odd number. When you're done here, go back to the long corridor above, and go to the far right to find a Boss room. *************** * BOSS: Golem * ****************************************************************************** When the Golem pounds the ground, rock will fall from above, and they can't be destroyed. If he raises his arm, he's going to perform a powerful punch. Whip him for a while and his head will open up. Now you must hit his "eye" to damage him, but be careful - when he stops, rocks will literally fountain from the "eye". Keep attacking and you'll win pretty soon. ****************************************************************************** Go ahead and hit the lever. Hey, what was that just now? Hmmm... well, the liquid filling the room certainly isn't water! Watch out for the spikes as the platform slowly raises ro the top of the room, where you'll find out the gruesome truth about what just happened. Go on and kill the Slimes until you reach the room with a [Strange Mirror] and the [Yellow Stone]. Go back to the corridor before the Save Room, and this time, drop down the hole in the floor. Reach the lower corridor and go right to find a [Heart Max Up], then go left and continue. You'll find a [High Potion] in the vertical room, then go on until you reach a teleport. Use it. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ +-----------------+ | SKY WALKWAY (A) | +-----------------+ Items: Anti-venom Chaos Ring Elixir Face-guard Gold Trinket High Potion Hint Card 2 Life Max Up Medicine Jar (2) MK's Bracelet Night Goggles Silver Trinket Enemies: White Dragon, Flying Bone, Balloon, Big Balloon, Bone Archer, Ruler Sword Go ahead and you'll meet Maxim once again, but this time you'll discover a lot of new things about the castle and your mission. Now go to the next room and explore it to retrieve a [High Potion], a [Life Max Up], and an [Anti-Venom]. Take the upper-right exit and in the next room, save at the Save Room below the Boss door. Take note of the peculiar right wall of this room. Then, get out and take the left ceiling exit and reach the next area. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ +--------------------------+ | CHAPEL OF DISSONANCE (A) | +--------------------------+ Items: Anti-Venom Emerald Cloak Eye of Vlad Heart Max Up Life Max Up Potion Enemies: Fleaman, Bone Pillar, Flying Bone, Bone Thrower, Bone Archer Keep going up and you'll find an [Anti-Venom]. Eventually you'll reach a huge room. Search it to find a [Heart Max Up], a [Life Max Up], a [Potion], an [Emerald Cloak], and the [Eye of Vlad]. However, you can't reach the Eye now, so remember where it is and go back to the Save Room. This time, take the right ceiling exit. In the room above you'll find an [Elixir], a [Gold Trinket], and a [Silver Trinket]. Now go back down and challenge the Boss. *************** * BOSS: Devil * ****************************************************************************** Try not to touch the Devil directly, because if you do, you'll get cursed. If he's on the ground and you're too close to him, he'll try to swipe you with his flaming claws. However, for most of the time, he'll fly here and there. When he stops, he'll spit out a flaming beam. If he's in the air, the beam will sweep the area in front of him (ground included), while if he's on the ground, the beam will shoot straight ahead. Using spells will make the battle a lot shorter and easier. ****************************************************************************** When the Devil is dead, go to the right and you'll find the [Night Goggles]. Now go back to the Save Room and take the passage in the floor. Go to the following corridor and equip the Night Goggles to light the room a little more. Below the entrance is a [Face-guard]. In the next corridor, slide under the wall and get the [Hint Card 2]. Go ahead and slide under the next platform to find a [Chaos Ring]. Then, enter the next area. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ +-------------------------+ | AQUEDUCT OF DRAGONS (A) | +-------------------------+ Items: Blue Stone Hard Gloves Heart Max Up (2) Life Max Up Nail of Vlad Enemies: Bat, Tiny Slime, Slime, Merman, Fishman, Boomerang Armor Go past the first two rooms. In the corridor with the Mermen, go left to find a [Heart Max Up], then go right and down. Two rooms ahead you'll find the [Hard Gloves]. In the next hall, kill the Boomerang Armor and double jump into the wall to find a secret passage. Behind the wall you'll find the [Nail of Vlad]. Now go back to the Mermen corridor and exit on the right. Go ahead and, when you get to the blades on the ceiling, dash to avoid them. At the end of the corridor is the [Blue Stone]. Note that the blades won't come down when you come back. Now go back and take the upper exit. Use the Save Room on the left, then go right to the Boss. ********************** * BOSS: Giant Merman * ****************************************************************************** If he grabs his nose, he'll release a water wave that will sweep the floor ahead of him. If he rolls up into a ball, double jump to avoid him. When you've made enough damage, he'll call Fishmen and Mermen to help him. Just avoid his attacks and keep whipping to defeat him. ****************************************************************************** In the next room you'll receive a [Life Max Up] and a [Heart Max Up]. Open the door to reach another area. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ +-----------------+ | CLOCK TOWER (A) | +-----------------+ Items: Antique Table Bagonette Bolt Book Castle Map 3 Fang of Vlad Green Stone Guardian Armor Guardian Boots Guardian Glove Guardian Helm Heart Max Up (2) Hint Card 4 Life Max Up (2) Lucky Cat Scale Armor Enemies: Fleaman, Bone Pillar, White Dragon, Big Skeleton, Disc Armor, Arabaki, Ruler Sword Lv2, Feather Demon, Guardian Armor, Gold Medusa, Harpy, Specter Take the first exit and go to the end of the road to find a [Heart Max Up]. Now go back to the first room and go up. Press the switch to open the door, and go on. Use the pendulums to get past the spikes, and exit down to find the [Castle Map 3]. Go up and left. In the next shaft, go down to find the [Bagonette], then all the way up and right. In this room you'll find the [Hint Card 4]. Exit and enter the room below. Take the exit in the ceiling and you'll find a [Life Max Up]. Then, go down and to the right end of the corridor to get a [Scale Armor]. Finally, go down and right. In the next shaft, take the first right and go all the way down to find the [Antique Table]. Go back up and through the upper-right door. Proceed until you meet the Guardian Armor. Keep whipping it until it falls into the cogs and dies, releasing the [Guardian Armor], [Guardian Helm], [Guardian Boots], and [Guardian Glove]. Now go back to the room past the Ruler Sword and go up. Use the Save Room, then proceed to the next room, where a Boss awaits. ******************** * BOSS: Max Slimer * ****************************************************************************** As you keep hitting him, he shrinks, but he also divides into a lot of Slimes. If you leave him alone, he'll jump to the ceiling, then come back up and change color. The blue one can poison you, the yellow one can petrify you, and the red one can curse you. Just keep attacking and after a while he'll explode. ****************************************************************************** Go ahead and enter the first door on the left to find the [Green Stone]. Then, go still up and you'll finally meet Death to have an explanation of what's going on. Now, use the teleport. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ +-----------------+ | CLOCK TOWER (B) | +-----------------+ Items: Big Mana Prism Crushing Stone Elixir Healing Mail Heart Chocker Heart Max Up High Potion Kaiser Knuckle Life Max Up (2) Lucky Ring Medicine Jar Raccoon Figure Tall Clock Wind Cloak Enemies: Medusa Head, Fleaman, Ghost, White Dragon Lv2, Skeleton Blaze, Peeping Eye, Skeleton Rib, Disc Armor, Arabaki, Fleaman Armor, Specter, Bronze Guarder, Disc Armor Lv2 Go right and down, and enter the first door to find a [Life Max Up]. Go ahead, and in the big shaft, go up to collect the [Tall Clock]. Go down, save, then go still down and exit right. Go ahead to the next room, and hit the gear until the passage opens. Proceed to the end of the passage, where you'll find a [Heart Max Up]. Now go back to the room before the gear, and go down to the next exit. Go right to find the Bronze Guarder, and make him follow you until near the exit. Now press the switch on the floor to... open up a new passage ^__^. Proceed. The first room you'll find is a shop (but only if you have the Noon Star item), and the second is a Save Point. The lower room is more interesting. The moment you press the switch, the iron ball will start rolling. You have to race it to the finish. If you reach the end of the course first, slide past the wall to find the [Healing Mail] and the [Heart Choker]. The exit on the lower left leads to the [Lucky Ring] and the [Raccoon Figure]. Return to the shaft before the Bronze Guarder, go up and left, then down, and enter the left door. It's a Boss room. ********************* * BOSS: Peeping Big * ****************************************************************************** Kill the Peeping Eye and Peeping Big will appear near the entrance. He can only attack you with his tail, so when you see him spin it around, reel backwards and he'll miss. If the battle lasts for too long, Peeping Big may close his eyelid, retire his tail, and start bouncing around the room. This can be easily avoided by staying on the ground. Note that while the eyelid is closed, Peeping Big can't be damaged. ****************************************************************************** The next room provides a [Life Max Up]. Take the upper exit and go right to find an [Elixir], then go left and up to find a [Wind Cloak]. Go down and right, then up again to find a room with a [Kaiser Knuckle]. Go back and all the way down, and through the lower exit. In the room below you'll see a Stone, but you can't pick it up now, so go ahead, collecting the [Big Mana Prism] and the [High Potion]. In the following shaft, exit on the first on the left and go ahead, taking the [Medicine Jar], until you reach a mechanism. Whip it until it's at its lowest point, and a message will appear. Go back up to the pendulum corridor and down to collect the fundamental [Crushing Stone]. Proceed to the next area. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ +-------------------------+ | AQUEDUCT OF DRAGONS (B) | +-------------------------+ Items: Earth Ring Elixir Life Max Up (2) Uncurse Potion Enemies: Tiny Slime, White Dragon, Merman, Fishman, Arabaki, Melty Zombie, Bone Liquid Go ahead until the Save Room, save, and go down. Go right and you'll find a [Life Max Up]. Back and down, proceed and get the [Uncurse Potion] on the way. In the long corridor, kill the White Dragon and go through the wall to find another [Life Max Up]. Go back and down, and crush the stone wall at the bottom to recover the [Earth Ring]. Go back to the corridor past the Save Room, and go left to the end to get an [Elixir], then go up until you reach the next area. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ +-----------------+ | SKY WALKWAY (B) | +-----------------+ Items: Blizzard Robe Heart Max Up (2) Heart of Vlad King-size Bed Life Max Up Mana Prism Old Radio Rocking Chair Turkey Enemies: Flying Bone, Arabaki, Skeleton Mirror, Axe Armor Lv2, Ruler Sword Lv3, Spriggan After the corridors with the Skeleton Mirrors, you'll find a [Turkey]. Save at the next Save Room, then break the right wall in this same room to find the hidden [Heart of Vlad]. Now go to the right exit in the ceiling and climb to the top to find a [Heart Max Up] and the [King-size Bed]. Now go fight the Boss. ************************ * BOSS: Legion (saint) * ****************************************************************************** Hit the shell to expose the eye. The shell is made up of four parts. If you destroy some, but not all, of the parts of the shell, little copies of Legion will fly around. When half of the shell is destroyed, a tentacle will pop out and shoot you sometimes. This is VERY powerful and damaging, so look out. When the shell is completely destroyed, the eye will grow two more tentacles, two of which can shoot at the same time. Watch out for the tentacles' beam and keep whipping until you win. ****************************************************************************** Go right, pick up the [Mana Prism], then go back to the big room and take the exit on the left wall. Search the room for the [Blizzard Robe], the [Rocking Chair], and the [Old Radio]. On the left wall, choose the lower exit and proceed to find a [Heart Max Up]. Now go back and choose the higher exit. Break the stone wall, take the [Life Max Up] and go ahead to find a Boss room. Enter it and you'll find... Maxim? Whoever he is, you'll have to fight. **************** * BOSS: Shadow * ****************************************************************************** When Shadow is a flaming face, you can't hit him. First, he will morph into a panther. When he howls, he'll run or jump at you. When you defeat this form, he'll turn up into a giant sword that will fly here and there. It can curse you if it touches you, so beware. After the sword, he'll become a moth that can poison you with its spores. Hit it a few more times and you'll defeat it. ****************************************************************************** Go back to the room with the Save Room, and this time, take the left exit in the ceiling and proceed to the next area. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ +--------------------------+ | CHAPEL OF DISSONANCE (B) | +--------------------------+ Items: Big Mana Prism Heart Max Up Hero Statue High Potion Hint Card 6 Life Max Up Enemies: Skeleton Spear, Axe Armor Lv2, Specter Go up, taking the [High Potion] as you go. In the big room, take the [Hero Statue], the [Heart Max Up], the [Big Mana Prism], and the [Hint Card 6]. Take note that there's a [Life Max Up] you can't reach yet. Now return to the teleport, and to Clock Tower A. Remember the place where you used the giant hammer against the armor? Now the road is open, so go there. This time, the ball race is much tougher. There are much more obstacles, such as the spikes in the bottom floor, and many enemies that will get in your way. You prize for winning is pretty rich: a [Lucky Cat], a [Heart Max Up], a [Life Max Up], and the [Bolt Book]. Now, if you want to reach the room on the left, go past the upper floor and down. You should see a vertical passage on the lower left. Go to the same floor with the spikes and slide against the wall to go through it. The room hides the [Fang of Vlad]. Now go to the Save Room with the breakable wall, and open the secret room to find two [Medicine Jars]. Next, go to the room where you fought Shadow in Castle B, and you'll find the true Maxim. After a dialogue, he'll give you [MK's Bracelet]. Now go to the Chapel of Dissonance and open the yellow door by equipping the Bracelet. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ +----------------------+ | CASTLE TOP FLOOR (A) | +----------------------+ Items: Big Mana Prism Candlestick Castle Drawing Elixir (2) Heart Max Up Hint Card 3 Life Max Up (2) Silver Armor Steel Tip Turkey Enemies: Peeping Eye, Tiny Devil, Arabaki, Poison Lizard, Rare Ghost Break the stone wall and walk ahead to the next room, which is a teleport. Pick up the [Hint Card 3], then enter the Boss room. **************** * BOSS: Pazuzu * ****************************************************************************** Pazuzu will always jump twice towards you at the beginning of each attack sequence. Avoid him - standing below a platform may be a good idea. After two jumps, he will flap his wings and fly, then land and spit out some fireballs. He will spit one wave of fireballs at the beginning, and three after he's received enough damage. After the fireballs, he will point at you and four Tiny Devils will enter the room to help him. They can be easily defeated. Just keep attacking and stand at a safe distance and you'll make it all right. ****************************************************************************** After the battle, you will meet Lydie, but Death will come to spoil the party. Continue through the Chapel. Press the switch to open the hatch, and go up to take the [Heart Max Up] and the [Life Max Up]. Now go down and past the Save Room. In the vertical room, on the right the Merchant will appear if you have an even number of hearts. At the far right in the corridor below you'll find the [Castle Drawing]. Go down, save in the Save Room on the left, and cross the Boss door. ********************** * BOSS: Minotaur Lv2 * ****************************************************************************** His only attack is performed with that huge ball-and-chain, which he'll swirl above his head before attacking. Its range is quite long, so make sure to reel backwards when he attacks. If you attack constantly he'll stumble backwards and you'll have more room to maneuvre. He'll be dead soon. ****************************************************************************** Get the [Steel Tip] in the next room, then continue going downwards. In the following room there is a [Holy Ring]. When you reach the long corridor, go all the way left and up. Go left to find a [Heart Max Up], then right and up again. Collect the [Closet] and take the first exit, that will lead to a [Heaven's Ring]. Then, go back down and proceed left. At the end, drop down, where you'll find the [Plate Mail]. Go see the Merchant if you wish to, then go back up and continue left. Go all the way down and left, and at the end you'll find the [Greed Amulet]. Get it and go back up to proceed to the left. Ignore the lower exit and go ahead. The next room has a [Teapot] and a [Teacup]. Go still down and to the left to get the [Life Max Up]. Go left and break the stone wall, then go right to a room with a [Bookshelf]. Return to the large room above, and go to the left. Push the crate to the left and use it to reach the upper ledge. Push the other crate down, then push the first one to the left and down. Now, push the second crate above the other, but not so much that it falls down, and use it to reach the top of the wall. Get the [Heart Max Up] and proceed left. Push the lower crate left, but don't let it touch the wall. Go up and push the second crate down on the first, then left and down, and left again to be able to reach the highest part of the room. Recover the [Life Max Up] and continue left. The room with the Skeleton Glasses is EXCELLENT to level up, so make sure to stop here for a while before you continue. Keep going left and you'll eventually reach a Boss room. ************************* * BOSS: Legion (corpse) * ****************************************************************************** Is this a joke? This Boss is so ludicrously easy it's not even fun! Just keep whipping its inferior part until it opens up, then keep hitting the internal skeleton. It will curse you if it touches you, and it will drop large maggots that will crawl towards you. ****************************************************************************** In the next room you'll find the [Cipher's Charm]. Take it and return to the room before the Boss, and take the upper exit. Go right and past the first Mimic. When you get to the second, get close to the right door and jump towards it so that the Mimic presses the switch. After that you'll find the [Hint Card 5] and the [Rare Ring]. Now go all the way to the left, where a tricky room awaits. Go up and push the lefternmost crate on the platform below, then right until it almost fall downs (don't let it fall though). Now, push the crate that was near it down on the first one, and make sure that its left border is almost in line with the half of the black column in the background. Then, push the remaining crate down on the second, and to the right to make it fall. Use it to reach the high platform on the right, and proceed. You'll find the [Floodgate Key] in the upper-left corner of the room. Return to the Castle Treasury, and from there go right into another area. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ +---------------------+ | LUMINOUS CAVERN (A) | +---------------------+ Items: Arm Plates Drumstick Full Helmet Griffin's Wing Heart Max Up (3) Hint Card 1 Leggings Life Max Up Medicine Jar Skull Key Uncurse Potion Enemies: Fleaman, Bone Pillar, Ectoplasm, Tiny Devil, Man-Eater, Disc Armor, Axe Armor Lv2, Blaze Master, Victory Armor, Hammer-Hammer, Pixie, Sylph Go ahead until the room past the Save Room, where you'll find the [Full Helmet] and a [Heart Max Up]. Break the stone wall blocking the way to the room on the left, visit the teleport there, then exit on the right. In this room you'll find a [Medicine Jar]. Now go back to the previous room, and take the passage below. From there, go left, down, and left to find the [Hint Card 1], then right and ahead until you reach a room with a keyhole. Use the Floodgate Key and return to the corridor before the Save Room, and go down. Go to the next corridor, and right to find the [Arm Plates], then go on left. In the next room there's a pair of [Leggings]. Proceed to find the Boss room. *************** * BOSS: Death * ****************************************************************************** After a dialogue, the battle with Death finally begins. Many scythes will fly around the room trying to hit you, but you can destroy them. Death appears and disappears, trying to hit you. He will lift his sickle, then lunge to attack you. If blood pours from his sickle, blue rays will emerge from the ground. Get out of their trajectory, as they will turn to powerful light beams soon thereafter. Finally, Death can throw his sickle like a boomerang. This move is preceded by Death rotating his sickle. When you defeat him, prepare for another battle - Death will change form, turning into a giant skeleton scorpion! He will fly around the whole room, and can hit you with his claws and his stingy tail. You have to hit him on the head to damage him. Fortunately, you can stay on his back without being hit, so do it when he's very close to the ground. Be careful, he's pretty fast in this form. ****************************************************************************** The next room hides the [Griffin's Wing], that will enable you access to all the parts of the castle not blocked by doors. Now, return to the room after the Save Room, go down, and right for another Boss fight. *************** * BOSS: Talos * ****************************************************************************** OK, so you have to face another big armor, what's the prob... ooops! Well, it seems the armor is a tiny bit bigger than expected. Its only weak point is its left leg. Hitting it rapidly will result in Talos going backwards. When it moves its arm forward, step back because it will also attack the ground ahead of it. When Talos kneels, it can either attack you with its hand, or produce a short blade and swipe it on the ground towards you. This attack has a very long reach, so beware. ****************************************************************************** After Talos there's a big room containing two [Heart Max Up] and one [Life Max Up]. Get to the upper exit and at the end of the passage you'll find the [Skull Key]. With this equipment, you can visit almost all the rooms in the castle. To start, go back to the corridor before the Save Room, take the passage in the ceiling, and visit the rooms there for a [Drumstick]. Then, go back and to the Save Room in the Skeleton Cave, and use the Griffin's Wing to reach a secret room with a [Life Max Up] and a [Big Mana Prism]. Now, go where you found the Floodgate Key and go up the passage in the ceiling. This shaft will return you to the Entrance. Go to the Save Room, and from there go right and take the passage up. Continue until the room with the high walls, and jump past the wall. Go to the room below to find the [Platinum Tip], then find the teleport above. Use it. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ +--------------+ | ENTRANCE (B) | +--------------+ Items: Ancient Urn Big Mana Prism (2) Heart Max Up High Potion Lure Key Pretty Vase Rib of Vlad War Fatigues Enemies: Feather Demon, Bone Liquid, Spriggan, Rare Ghost, Clear Bone Go to the room below the teleport to find the final key, the [Lure Key]. This will open the metal doors. Now go to the shaft you visited in Castle A to go to the Skeleton Cave B, but before you do, stop in the corridor where there's the entrance to the shaft, and take the upper exit to find a [Heart Max Up]. While you go down the shaft, activate the teleport behind the metal door. You'll also find a [Pretty Vase], a [High Potion], and a [Big Mana Prism]. In the Skeleton Cave, in the secret room above the Save Room you'll find the [Wizard's Urn] and the final Spellbook, the [Summoning Tome]. Now proceed to the right, and go to the lowermost corridor of the Cave. Go left and the passage will be clear, revealing the [Bullet Tip]. Now head for the Luminous Cavern, and go to the room past Golem. Use the High Jump to reach an [Elixir] and the [Walk Armor]. Now, go to the teleport in this area and go to Castle A. From here, teleport to the Castle Top Floor, enter the Chapel of Dissonance and collect the [Eye of Vlad]. Teleport to Castle B and collect the [Life Max Up] in the Chapel, and visit the rooms you haven't explored yet. You'll find a [Mystical Robe]. Descend until the Treasury, and from there go left to the Wailing Way. Before you go there though, go to the lower elevator room and open the metal door. Collect the [Sun Armor], warp to Castle A to get the [Moon Armor], then return to Castle B and proceed. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ +---------------------------------------------------+ | THE WAILING WAY (B) & SHRINE OF THE APOSTATES (B) | +---------------------------------------------------+ Items: Anti-venom Candleholder Crush Boots Drumstick Elixir Heart Max Up (2) Life Max Up Potion Smiling Statue Turkey Enemies: Bat, Bone Pillar, Large Ghost, Rare Ghost, Owl, Jp Bonepillar, Simon Wraith In the second room you'll find an [Anti-venom]. In the next hall, go through the upper-right door first, then visit the rooms on the left. This way, you'll find a [Life Max Up], a [Potion], a [Candleholder], a [Smiling Statue], and the [Crush Boots]. With these Boots you can now fully explore the castle. Return to the big room of this area, and go down. Check the east part of this zone to find a [Turkey] and a [Heart Max Up], then go left. In the next rooms you'll find a [Drumstick] and an [Elixir]. Save and enter the Boss lair. ***************** * BOSS: Cyclops * ****************************************************************************** Pretty easy in concept, the Cyclops has an immense attacking power. When you see him lounge, he's about to perform a dash attack. Jump to avoid it. When he lifts up his hammer, he will use it to attack. It has a long range and is incredibly damaging, so step back immediately. Apart from that, this battle is quite easy. ****************************************************************************** Pick up the [Heart Max Up] in the next room, and return to the Entrance through the door. Go to the very entrance of the castle, and outside. Go to the far left to find the [War Fatigues], then equip the Crush Boots and break through the passage in the ceiling. Here you'll find a [Big Mana Prism], an [Ancient Urn], and the [Rib of Vlad]. Now go to the Marble Corridor. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ +--------------------------------------------+ | MARBLE CORRIDOR (B) & ROOM OF ILLUSION (B) | +--------------------------------------------+ Items: Life Max Up (2) Heart Max Up High Potion Silk Curtain Twilight Cloak Viking Helm Enemies: Fleaman, Lizard Man, Devil, Arabaki, Fleaman Armor, 0, Axe Armor Lv2, Specter, Poison Lizard, Spriggan, Victory Armor, Master Lizard, Pike Master Explore all the rooms and pick up all the items. When you're done, use the teleport in the Entrance to return to the Castle Top Floor. Go right and use the Crush Boots to access the area in the ceiling. You'll find a [Heart Max Up], two [Medicine Jars], the [Wine Glass], and the [Kaiser Mail]. Now return to Castle A and collect everything you left behind. You'll find the following items: [Life Max Up] (3), [Heart Max Up] (3), [Potion] (2), [Anti- venom] (2), [Big Mana Prism], [Elixir], [Turkey], [Candlestick], [Big Mana Prism], [Magical Armor], [Silver Armor], [Fancy Clothes], [Logoth's Ring], [Silk Cloak], [Vlad's Ring]. In the upper room of the Castle Top Floor you'll find a big metal glove holding a heart. Whip it and the passage to the central room of the castle will open in both Castle A and B. At this point, you can enter the castle's very core for the final battle. Note that to enter this area in Castle B, you *must* have found all of the Dracula parts. *********************** * FINAL BATTLE: Maxim * ****************************************************************************** Maxim is very strong and quick, so make sure you're wearing the best equipment you have. He also has a wide variety of attacks. He can throw a giant shuriken that will act like a boomerang, and while the weapon is still in midair, he can use any other attack on you. He can hit you with his sword in an attack that resembles that of the Sacred Fist, or he can jump and come back down kicking. There are two attacks that can give you a lot of trouble. First, Maxim can create a clone of himself. The clone will mimic Maxim's every movement like a mirror image, so their tactic consists in attacking you from both sides. Your attacks won't hurt the clone, which will disappear after a while. Maxim's most dangerous attack occurs when he stops and a circle of sparkles appears around him. He will then release an actual _shower_ of clones of himself at you, which can damage you a lot since they're so hard to avoid. They can be destroyed though, and Maxim can still be hit while performing this attack. The best way to defend yourself from this is to use a summon spell, which should last for the entire duration of the attack. There's no best strategy against Maxim. Spells and summons will deplete your MP very quickly, and your opponent has enough HP to endure multiple subsequent spells. Attacking him directly will result in him incessantly hitting you with his sword, and believe me, it hurts. However, if your level is higher than Maxim's, there's a strategy that works exceptionally well: simply slide into Maxim, back and forth. He can still hit you, but you will hit him faster, and if you manage to back him into a corner, he's in for a lot of damage. This is also very useful when he creates a clone, because sliding will let you escape a double attack quite easily. Bring along a good number of healing items if your level is low, and keep trying. In the end, Maxim is not too tough. ****************************************************************************** If you beat Maxim, a different ending scene will trigger, according to which castle you beat Maxim in. Then, the credits will roll. ============================================================================== 6. SECRETS, INFO & CURIOSITIES ============================================================================== _______ ___/Dracula\__________________________________________________________________ ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ OK, OK, I know I couldn't fool you. Dracula _is_ in the game, although he's clearly not in his best shape. In fact, he's only a phantom of his true self, but this doesn't mean he can't put up a good fight. So, how do you meet the Count? It's pretty simple, actually. Go to Castle B and challenge Maxim in the central room while having both the JB's Bracelet and the MK's Bracelet equipped. Beat Maxim and a new scene will occur, showing you the role played by Dracula in the story. At that point, the real final battle will begin. ************************************* * REAL FINAL BATTLE: Dracula Wraith * ****************************************************************************** If you're a Castlevania geek, you've done this many times before by now. Dracula will appear and disappear, stopping in between to open his cape and throw either three destructible fireballs, or a series of invincible dark energy balls. His weak point, as you may imagine, is the head. Jump and whip him when he appears, and sooner or later he'll be defeated - but only to reveal, as usual, another more hellish, more powerful form. Drac's final incarnation is an obscene mixture of all the Dracula relics you've found in the castle, with some additions. The most notable one is the huge claw that will try to hit you in its constant movement. If you see it raise high in the air, you know a direct swipe is coming. It hurts, but not as much as the gigantic beam the eye can shoot every once in a while. The beam is announced by a thin ray coming out of the eye, so as soon as you see it, duck to avoid the incoming attack. You can whip just any part of its body to inflict damage to this hellish creature. The monster is so big, you just can't miss, and you can use just any spell or summon to make the fight shorter. After you've depleted Drac's much appropriate reserve of 6666 HP, the game will be truly over. ****************************************************************************** Defeating Dracula opens up a new option in the title screen, and it also reveals the game's best ending. ____________ ___/The Merchant\_____________________________________________________________ ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ The stationary old man from _Symphony of the Night_ has been replaced by a younger and much less reliable fellow this time around. His prices are absolutely crazy - but hey, what do you expect from a guy who lost his way in the fog, found himself in Castlevania, and decided to remain and put up a business in the castle itself? However, one of the most troublesome things about the Merchant is that there's no guarantee to find him where he should be. In fact, to find him in a room you usually have to meet certain conditions, or you will only find an empty room. It will be unlocked once you've defeated Maxim in the final battle. It will be accessible from the title screen, which will also turn red from the original blue. There are three difficulty levels for this sub-game, but you must beat each level in order to unlock a harder one. The difficulty level determines how many bosses you'll have to fight, as follows: Easy Normal Hard Giant Bat Giant Bat Giant Bat Living Armor Living Armor Living Armor Skull Knight Skull Knight Skull Knight Golem Golem Golem Minotaur Minotaur Minotaur Devil Devil Giant Merman Giant Merman Max Slimer Max Slimer Peeping Big Peeping Big Legion (saint) Shadow Legion (saint) Pazuzu Minotaur Lv2 Legion (corpse) Talos Death Death Cyclops Dracula Wraith Dracula Wraith In the starting room, you can choose any of the subweapons by picking it up from candles. In order, you'll find the Knife, the Sacred Fist, the Holy Book, the Holy Water, the Axe, and the Cross. After each battle, you'll receive the healing sphere, and before the subsequent battle you can get 30 hearts from the six candles you'll find in the room after each boss. Whatever the result of your trial, you'll receive a score based on how long it took you to defeat all bosses, and if you die, on how many bosses you defeated. I suggest that you choose the Cross for the challenge - it's just too good not to take it with you. __________ ___/Sound Mode\_______________________________________________________________ ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Sound Mode becomes available when you defeat Dracula in the game. I'm not sure if you also have to have visited all the rooms in both castles (that is, if your game completion percentage is 200%). Anyway, this sound test lets you enjoy all of the game's tracks without the need to stand still in an empty room for minutes just to listen to the music. Here's a list of the tracks: 00. All you have to do is to insert a specific name on the Name Entry screen, then start the game as normal. Here's what you can do. HARDGAME: it's the very same game, but difficulty has been toned up a bit. Good if you didn't enjoy the incredible easiness with which you could defeat the bosses. NO MAGIC: even more interesting, this code allows you to play the game as normal, only you won't find any Spellbooks. They will be replaced by Heart Max Ups. Note that when you type in the code, you have to do the space with the R button. If you select the space from the letter selection box, the code won't work. MAXIM: this is the most interesting code of them all. It will let you play the game as Maxim Kischine. For details about playing as Maxim, read on. ~ PLAYING AS MAXIM ~ Maxim is totally different from Juste, so playing as him will be a very diverse experience. Maxim has the following features: - He is much faster than Juste. - He can perform a triple jump. Simply press the A button three times to do this. - He can't pick up any item or subweapon. He can't even acces the menu. The only things he can pick up are Life Max Ups and Heart Max Ups. He can find money, but he won't be able to use it. - Maxim can't level up. His strength will remain unchanged throughout the game. - He can perform a jump kick after a double or triple jump. Press Down+B to do this. - He can only use his shuriken as a subweapon. It will cost him 5 hearts for every use. - He can roll into a ball while jumping and roll on the floor after he lands. To do this, press Up+A when in midair. This move uses MP proportionally to the time it remains active. Rolling at the top of a jump will make you gain some extra height. - Maxim has two spells at his disposal. The first one is an attack performed with many clones of himself. To perform it, press Forward, Back, Down, Up and B. This spell will hit everything on screen, and it will use half of Maxim's MP. The second spell is the Healing Rain. To perform it, press Up, Up-Back, Back, Down-Back, Down, Down-Forward, and Forward+B. This spell uses 50 hearts, and it will restore Maxim's HP. ~ BOSS RUSH MODE EXTRA CHARACTERS ~ You can play the Boss Rush Mode not only with Juste, but also with two more characters. Here's how to do it. - Play as Maxim: to do this, hold L and R while you select the difficulty level. Maxim can collect as many as 135 hearts. - Play as Simon Belmont: this super-secret trick requires you to use a code from times gone by. When the Konami logo appears as you turn on the game, insert the famous Konami code (Up, Up, Down, Down, Left, Right, Left, Right, B, A, Start). The title screen will turn blue. Now, start Boss Rush Mode to play as Simon. Simon looks and plays as he did in the first Castlevania. Therefore, he can't collect the Sacred Fist or the Holy Book, and his movements are very limited. Basically, he can only jump and whip, and use subweapons. This means that you'll have to plan some movements in advance in order to escape enemy attacks. However, Simon kicks much harder than Juste, and his Defense is also higher. Furthermore, he can't be poisoned or cursed. He starts the game with 83 hearts, and he can collect as many as 249. If you can complete Boss Rush Mode at the Hard difficulty level using Simon, you'll be rewarded with a secret ending. ___________ _/Leveling up\________________________________________________________________ ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Here's a chart of the EXP points needed for each level up, up to level 51. I don't think it's necessary to list the requirements for subsequent levels, since it would require a whole lot of time just to reach level 51. Lv EXP Lv EXP 2 120 27 42120 3 360 28 45360 4 720 29 48720 5 1200 30 52200 6 1800 31 55800 7 2520 32 59520 8 3360 33 63360 9 4320 34 67320 10 5400 35 71400 11 6600 36 75600 12 7920 37 79920 13 9360 38 84360 14 10920 39 88920 15 12600 40 93600 16 14400 41 98400 17 16320 42 103320 18 18360 43 108360 19 20520 44 113520 20 22800 45 118800 21 25200 46 124200 22 27720 47 129720 23 30360 48 135360 24 33120 49 141120 25 36000 50 147000 26 39000 51 153000 __________ ___/Nice Stuff\_______________________________________________________________ ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ - In the final areas of the game, you'll encounter a monster called the Simon Wraith. He's actually a skeleton version of Simon Belmont, complete with orange-brown clothes, whip, and bandana. He attacks just like Simon would, but most important, he kicks ass. His Japanese name is Shimon, or Simon, which is further proof of the fact that his name shouldn't be pronounced as in English. The "i" in the name should be read "e", as in "demon", not "eye", because Simon is French. - The English translation of the game continues the tradition of calling the hero Belmont in the West. However, as the ending of the first NES _Castlevania_ more than proves, the family's name is Belmondo. Again, this is French, probably after the French actor Jean Paul Belmondo. - The Bullet Tip was called the Cristopher's Soul in the Japanese version. This was taken from the first Game Boy Castlevania game, named _Castlevania Adventure_. In that game, upgrading your whip twice would allow you to shoot a fireball from the tip of your whip. And the main character's name was Cristopher Belmont. Why the English name is different lets you wondering, but this is probably either due to the fact that the original name wouldn't have much meaning for Western players, or that _Castlevania Adventure_ is not so widely known (and most important, not so fondly remembered by those who played it) outside Japan, or both. - This game seems heavily focused on references from the less appreciated Castlevania games ever. In fact, the story of _Harmony of Dissonance_ is connected to that of _Castlevania II: Simon's Quest_, where Simon Belmont had to collect the five pieces of Dracula and burn them in Castlevania in order to get rid of the Count's evil curse. _Simon's Quest_ was quite different from all other Castlevania games, and it's generally considered to be the worst 2D Castlevania along with _Castlevania Adventures_. - Using different pieces of equipment can change the color of Juste's blur. If you equip the Crimson Cloak, it will turn red, while if you equip the Emerald Cloak, it will become green. Finally, equipping the Twilight Cloak will make Juste leave behind a black blur. - This game is full of little nice touches. I'd like you to notice the way skeletons take off their head and carry it in their hands, or the dead skeleton dangling from a wheel in Clock Tower B, just to mention a couple. About the latter, see how it moves according to the wheel's movement. ============================================================================== 7. ITEM LIST ============================================================================== Items in this section are listed as they are in the game menu. The order in which defensive items are arranged goes like this: first come all the items that increase Defense only, listed in order of increasing protection, then come those that increase Defense as well as other stats. That's why you'll find some less defensive items listed after the most powerful armors. Note that I've not described each item in detail. I did this for two simple reasons: first, the in-game explanation tells about all there is to say, and second, each effect can be easily verified by the player. For every item, you'll find info about where it can be found or bought, or what monsters may drop it. This doesn't apply to healing items, which can be found in many places, or bought from the Merchant. _____________ ___/Whip upgrades\____________________________________________________________ ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Crushing Stone: Str -5 By holding ATTACK down, a "charged attack" can break some walls. MONSTER ENCYCLOPEDIA ============================================================================== The following is a complete list of the 100 different enemies you can encounter throughout the game. They are listed as they are in the in-game Monster Encyclopedia, and the info is also the same, apart from the indication of the area(s) where you can find each monster. "A" and "B" indicate each of the two castles in the game. A "---" in the "Drop items" list means "nothing". Concerning experience, you may notice that from a certain moment onwards, enemies will give you less EXP than that that is listed. The reason behind it is this: an enemy will give you the listed amount of EXP points if your experience level is lesser than, or equal to, his own. When your level gets higher than that of a monster, that monster will give you less than the listed EXP when killed. According to Zach Keene's FAQ, any monster will give you only 1 EXP point when killed since the moment you have roughly 10 levels more than him. FAQS ============================================================================== Q: Why can't I find the Rare Ghost? A: The Rare Ghost appears at certain locations only, but even if you know where to look for it, you still have little chances to see it. It will appear randomly, so if you can't find it in a room, exit and re-enter until you see it. Although I have listed more than one location where to find the Rare Ghost, the only place where I could see it so far is Castle B Entrance, at the top of the tall room below the Save Room. I have an extimated 1/20 encounter rate, although the real odds are unknown to me. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Q: How can I challenge Dracula? A: You have to fight the final battle with Maxim in Castle B while having the JB's Bracelet and the MK's Bracelet equipped. This way, at the end of the battle, Dracula will reveal himself. Remember, this ONLY works in Castle B. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Q: What do Hint Card 2 and 6 mean? A: Skyknight3_1 solved this for me. The secret passage Hint Card 2 refers to is the fake wall in the Aqueduct of Dragons, behind which you can find a hidden item in both Castle A and B (most noticeably Castle A, where a Dracula piece is hidden). Above the entrance of the corridor leading to the wall, you can notice a goddess statue, its eyes pointing at the section of the wall you can pass through. It's actually the only "true" secret passage in the whole game, so it was very stupid of me not to remember it. As for Hint Card 6, its message refers to a trick you can perform with the spell that fuses together the Knife and the Fire Book. While daggers appear around Juste, if you press B and the direction where each dagger is pointing at, you'll release a fireball for every dagger you could press B on. This can make for an incredibly powerful attack. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Q: How can I get to have no subweapons equipped, so that I can use the Healing Rain spell? A: Find the monster called 0 in Marble Corridor B or Room of Illusion B, and let it attack you. It will steal your current subweapon. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Q: So just what is Juste's Room for? A: It's common thinking that Juste's Room is there just for the sake of it. Yes, just for the fun of collecting furniture throughout the castle and putting it in place here. Lame as it may sound, it really seems to be the only logical explanation. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Q: How can I get a monster to drop the item(s) I want? A: Collecting items from enemies can be a real pain. The Rare Ring makes it incredibly easy to get the second item of the list from many monsters, but it also makes making them drop the first one incredibly hard. And, there are many monsters that just won't let go of an item unless you kill hundreds of them. You try to get the second item from Hammer-Hammer or Master Lizard, for example, or the Puff Coat from the Ruler Sword. A good way to milk out more items from creatures is to increase your Luck. While I was hunting for missing items, I used to equip two Lucky Rings along with the Rare Ring (I was very lucky to get a Lucky Ring from the Rare Ghost). If you can't find a second Lucky Ring, then the Lucky Charm works almost as well. Anyway, you'll have to be very patient. Also note that many enemies appear in a single room in the whole of the two castles. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Q: How many endings are there in the game? A: Three. The worst ending occurs when you beat Maxim in Castle B, as when you win the final battle, both Maxim and Lydie will be dead. A so-so ending is triggered when you defeat Maxim in Castle A: in that case, Maxim will die, but Lydie will be saved. Finally, the best ending can be obtained by beating the Dracula Wraith in Castle B. This way, you'll save both Maxim and Lydie. Whatever the ending, the final credits remain unchanged. If you want to consider Simon Belmont's final scene of Boss Rush Mode in Hard difficulty an ending, then you can say that the endings are four. But that's really not much of an ending. ============================================================================== 10. CREDITS ============================================================================== My thanks go to... Konami Computer Entertainment for another great Castlevania game. They couldn't resist the temptation to milk out the Symphony of the Night success, but the final result is quite remarkable, albeit less addictive than Circle of the Moon. Zach Keene for another excellent Castlevania FAQ. It helped me found out some secrets, and its Mechanics section simply deserves to be read. You can find his FAQ at www.gamefaqs.com Demajen for his good Heretic's Grave Web site. It provided detailed maps and monster lists to help me clear up mistakes. Visit his site at http://harmonyofdissonance.cjb.net/ Skyknight3_1 for telling me what Hint Card 2 and 6 meant. It's one of the most pertinent and precise contributions I've ever received. You, for reading my FAQ. I hope you enjoyed it, but most of all, I hope it was useful to you. Thank you! ~ Castlevania: Harmony of Dissonance FAQ ~ Copyright Efrem Orizzonte 2002
