POKEMON CRYSTAL VERSION NINTENDO GAMEBOY COLOR WRITTEN BY: CVXFREAK COPYRIGHT 2001 BY CVXFREAK VERSION: FINAL Welcome! I'm writing a guide for Pokemon Crystal. Yes, I usually write for survival horror games (Resident Evil, Silent Hill), but I'll do a Pokemon Crystal guide so I can have experience with RPG guides. This guide will cover everything STRICTLY Pokemon Crystal, so if you're in need of a Pokemon Gold, Silver, Yellow, Green, Blue or Red guide, please look at the specific sections for those guides at GameFAQS.com. Thank you and good luck! ================= TABLE OF CONTENTS ================= 1. INTRODUCTION 2. UPDATES 3. STORY 4. BOY OR GIRL? 5. CHOOSING THE TIME 6. WALKTHROUGH- JOHTO REGION 7. INTRODUCTION* ***************** Ever since Pokemon Red and Blue hit in 1998, I've been playing the series occasionally. In 1999, Pokemon Yellow hit. I played that, too. But I wasn't really INTO the series all that much. I'm more into Silent Hill, Resident Evil and Final Fantasy. But I still like playing the Pokemon games. They're fun on my new GameBoy Advance. Pokemon Red, Yellow and Blue takes place 3 years before Crystal, Gold and Silver's times. Red, Yellow and Blue focus on Ash Ketchum and Gary Oak as they compete to complete their Pokemon journey. 3 years later, Chris and Kris try to compete for the Pokemon Kanto- Johto Championships. They need to raise Pokemon in order to win the championship, much Gary and Ash before them. Will they win? That's pretty much up to you. This guide will cover almost all the aspects of Pokemon Crystal. This is my first for Pokemon, so be fair! Good luck! ************ *2. UPDATES* ************ ================== September 29, 2001 ================== UPDATE: Cleaned a few sections up. Added my Review. ============== August 4, 2001 ============== UPDATE: Started FAQ. Will finish within 3 days. ********** *3. STORY* ********** NOTE: This is from the instruction booklet. In this world live creatures called Pokemon. Humans and Pokemon have lived, worked and played together in harmony for ages. Nevertheless, there are still numerous mysteries surrounding them. In order to find out more about these strange and marvelous creatures, many scientists- such as Professor Elm of New Bark Town- have dedicated their lives to Pokemon research. One day, Professor Elm invites you to the lab. When you arrive, he says, "There are many things I don't quite understand quite yet, so I'd like you to raise one of these Pokemon which I recently caught." Since you're a curious person, you agree to help. Suddenly, Professor Elm receives an e-mail from his friend, Mr. Pokemon, asking him to come and his latest discovery. Professor Elm is far too busy to leave his lab, though. So after you choose your Pokemon, he asks you to go see what Mr. Pokemon has discovered. Just then, you notice that someone is lurking in the shadows outside, watching through the window. It appears to be a boy about your age, so you decide to go outside and talk to him. But when you approach the boy, he pushes you backward, saying, "What are you looking at?" Who is this strange boy, and what has Mr. Pokemon discovered? You can set the game's built-in clock to match the time in the real world. For example, if you play the game at night, it will also be night in the game, and you may be able to find some Pokemon that only come out at that time. There are also things in the game, such as "Tuesday Events"- you can participate in the event only if you play on the specified day. If you are playing Pokemon Crystal in the United States, Daylight Savings Time (DST) may be in effect. For most of the US, DST begins at 2:00 a.m. on the first Sunday of April and lasts until 2:00 a.m. on the last Sunday in October. There are some areas in the United States that do not observe DST. Please check your local regulations when entering time in Pokemon Crystal. When DST changes in real life, you should go to your house and talk to your Mom in the game to go change the clock setting. **************** *4. BOY OR GIRL* **************** So are you are girl or boy? It doesn't matter. If you choose either character the events are basically the same. I chose the girl, though I'm a boy, because I already chose the boy in Gold and Silver. Girl: I named her Jill, after Resident Evil and Resident Evil 3: Last Escape's Jill Valentine. She is basically the same as the boy, but in a different gender. Boy: I leave him as Chris, named after Chris Redfield from Resident Evil and Resident Evil CODE: Veronica X. Once again, he's basically the as the girl. There's no difference. Rival: I named him Wesker after Wesker from RE. He's evil like Wesker, so I see the connection:) ********************** *5. CHOOSING THE TIME* ********************** Well, try to pick the EXACT time in real life because the time changes Pokemon availability. Some Pokemon are nocturnal, so only come at night. If it's 10:00 a.m. in real life, try choosing that time. You don't have to, but it helps so you don't get confused. Try choosing the correct day, too. The Day Siblings come on certain days, so you want the actual day to remember when to go. If it is Daylight Savings Time, talk to the character's Mom to change the time. Some places, like Indiana, don't observe Daylight Savings Time, so you don't have to bother with those features. ****************************** *6. WALKTHROUGH- JOHTO REGION* ****************************** Here is the walkthrough for the Johto Region. For the Kanto Region, look in the next section. Each city has a paragraph or 2 and if the city has a gym, they'll have a special gym paragraph. This is a step by step walkthrough. So if you have to backtrack to certain cities, there will be a new paragraph after the previous task. Good luck! ***NEW BARK TOWN*** 1. After choosing your character and setting up the time, head Professor Elm's home outside, in the largest building in town. 2. Inside, talk to him and choose your Pokemon. CHOICE!!! You can choose either Cyndaquil, Chikorita or Totodile. CYNDAQUIL If you are a beginner, choose him, since he is considerably strong against the Violet, Azalea and Olivine Gym leaders. He can also beat many Pokemon at the start, but once you're in the Kanto Region, he'll be weak against a few leaders. CHIKORITA If you are an expert player, you'll want this guy, since he is the toughest to train. The first 4 gyms are strong against him, but at a high level, Chikorita is strong. TOTODILE He is probably the intermediate choice. He is well rounded and has no real weakness against a good majority of the Johto and Kanto gyms. He has the most powerful attack and can easily rack up experience sine he is so powerful. When he evolves, he'll be a must! If you're out to build a powerful team, go with Cyndaquil, since he is a VERY powerful fire type. You can get a Lapras or Blastoise in place of Totodile and a Victreebell in place of Chkiorita. END CHOICE!!! 3. After choosing your Pokemon, Elm tells you to go see Mr. Pokemon, who lives just north of the next town. Time to go! 4. Get a Potion from Elm's Assistant. 5. Outside, exit the town through the west. ***ROUTE 29*** 1. Keep heading west, through the ledges. You'll fight some Hoothoot and Rattata, but any of the starters can handle them. 2. You'll see a building halfway, which leads to Route 46 and Route 45, which connect New Bark Town and Cherrygrove City to Blackthorn City, home of the 8th Johto Gym. Unfortunately, you can't get very far, so keep traveling west on Route 29. 3. You'll eventually reach Cherrygrove City. ***CHERRYGROVE CITY*** 1. Talk to the guy near the entrance to get a map. 2. Rest your Pokemon at the Pokemon Center. 3. Go to the Mart and buy some Potion and Antidote. 4. Exit the town north, on Route 30. ***ROUTE 30*** 1. Go north, and take the branch that goes right. 2. Raise your Pokemon to Level 7. 3. Go to Mr. Pokemon's House. 4. Inside, talk to him and get his Pokemon Egg. 5. Get the Pokedex from Professor Oak. 6. After resting, exit. 7. When you exit, Elm will call you. 8. Go south back to Cherrygrove. ***CHERRYGROVE CITY*** 1. Rest your Pokemon at the Pokemon Center. 2. Attempt to exit onto Route 29. 3. If you beat her, she'll give you a Poison Barb, which increase poison attacks. END DAY SIBLING!!! 5. Travel into Union Cave. ***UNION CAVE*** 1. Challenge any opponents you see. 2. You won't be able to get around some places, but try to find the exit. 3. There's only one room to explore, so you'll get out fairly quickly. LAPRAS!!! If it's Friday and you have Surf, Surf from the waters through several room until you reach Lapras swimming lonely in water. You can capture one every Friday. If you didn't choose Totodile, he'll be a must-have Pokemon. END LAPRAS!!! 4. Exit outside to Route 33. ***ROUTE 33*** 1. Challenge the lone trainer. Beat him and get his phone number. 2. Grab the PSN Cure Berry in the plant. 3. Travel west into Azalea Town. ***AZALEA TOWN*** 1. Rest up at the Pokemon Center. 2. BATTLE TOWER* ****************** This is the new Battle Tower exclusive to Pokemon Crystal. Here is all the information I found. The Battle Tower is located west of Olivine City. In Battle Tower, you fight other in game trainers with Pokemon at certain levels. They are fairly difficult, but proper training and proper team management can beat them. Here are the rules: - Only 3 Pokemon on a team. - All 3 can't be the same. - They MUST hold different items. - They must be within the level area of the tower. For the all the levels , I recommend these 3 Pokemon: TOTODILE Cut Surf Mega Punch Screech X Attack GEODUDE Rock Throw Tackle Mega Punch Defense Curl X Accuracy FLAREON Flame Wheel Tackle Fire Spin [INSERT OTHER MOVE HERE] X Defend They cover each other. Totodile can handle the Fire, Rock and Ground types. Flareon can handle the Grass, Bird, Normal and Ice Types. Geodude can handle the Flying, Normal, Psychic and Ghost types. ************* *14. TRADING* ************* You can trade some Pokemon between Crystal and Gold and Silver. You need 2 Gameboy Colors or Gameboy Advances. Link them up. Go to a Pokemon Center's second floor and talk to the receptionist. You must have a Pokedex before trading. You can also trade between Crystal and Yellow, Red and Blue. You need to have the first 151 Pokemon ONLY. They must not know any GSC exclusive moves. You need to talk to Bill in Ecruteak City first before you get this feature working. ************************* *15. CONSTRUCTING A TEAM* ************************* To make a good team, you want a good Pokemon with each of these characteristics: A good attack and defense. Varied moves. Fast. You want: PSYCHIC with Normal Move and Dark Attack (ESPEON) with X ATTACK FIRE/FLYING with Dragon Move (CHARIZARD or DRAGONITE) with X DEFEND WATER/ICE with Cut and Surf and Ice Beam (FERALIGATR) with X DEFEND GRASS/POISON TYPE with Smog, Razor Leaf, Solar Beam, Tackle (VENUSAUR) with X ATTACK ROCK/FIGHTING TYPE: Rock Throw, Mega Punch, Flame Wheel (GOLEM) with LEFTOVERS ROUNDED POKEMON: Psychic, Flamethrower, Ice Beam, Recover (MEWTWO OR SNORLAX) with LEFTOVERS That's a good example of a well-rounded Pokemon Team with good items to supply you with. Try to vary with different Pokemon and attacks! ****************** *16. MYSTERY GIFT* ****************** You need a GameBoy Color and a Pokemon Pikachu 2. OTHER NOTES* ***************** ***POKEMON STADIUM*** Released: March 22, 2000 Platform: Nintendo 64 Basically a game where you have Pokemon battle other trainers. Utilizes Transfer Pak. ***POKEMON STADIUM 2*** Released: March 22, 2001 Platform: N64 Utilizes transfer Pak. It's compatible with Red, Blue, Yellow, Gold, Silver and Crystal. ***POCKET MONSTERS GREEN*** Released: Never in US Platform: GameBoy Pocket It's basically Blue Version in Japan. Some Pokemon look different. MY REVIEW --------- Nintendo has done it again! Although I don't play Pokemon that much, this game is enjoyable. I like almost every aspect! Good job Nintendo! Pokemon Crystal is basically an add on to the Gold and Silver Version, kinda like what Pokemon Yellow was to red and Blue. Pokemon Crystal takes place 3 years after Red, Blue and Yellow and follows the story of 2 young people who want to be Pokemon masters. Pokemon are like animals with special powers, like fire and ice! They learn to grow up like real animals do! It's really cool if you know the previous versions! GRAPHICS: 9 The graphics are great! For a GBC game, the animations are pretty cool and gives way to the capabilities of GameBoy Advance! There is a lot of detail and color for a GBC game and places like the Ice Path simply amazed me! AUDIO: 9 For a GBC game, it's pretty good. The sound gets a little repetative, but no where near annoying! The battle sounds fit the mood and travel sounds fit the mood! The sound is tinny, though, but it is no biggy. GAMEPLAY: 9 You travel around, collecting Pokemon as you go. You fight against other trainers to gain experience with Pokemon! There's also some backtracking to get to new areas! I also like controlling either a boy or girl, since what people say may differ from game to game. There's also the real time factor, which some Pokemon only come out at night! Cool! PRICE: 9 For $30, it's very fair. Games like these are priceless. It's fun to battle and trade with different people! It's a new type of concept. Very good and affordable price! If you can't afford it save up! VERY well worth it! REPLAYABILITY: 9 Well, once you beat the game with a certain starter Pokemon, you can try the game again with another starter Pokemon! Or you can play as the boy this time! There are VERY many areas to explore, so you miss them the first time around, but certainly you don't wanna miss them the second or third time around. You can also replay it if you missed out on a rare Pokemon like Lugia! RENT OR BUY- BUY! Go to Toys R Us and buy it right now! You want to catch them all! Go ahead! Renting won't even be worth it! OVERALL: 9 Get this B+/A- hybrid game. It's very well worth it. If you don't you'll obviously miss out! **************** *29.
