I am not authorized by any official party to translate any aspect of this game. I am translating for two main reasons, those being a desire to strengthen my knowledge of the language and to provide a resource that someone might enjoy or find useful. Feel free to distribute the guide as long as: 1. Proper authoring credit is given. 2. The guide is unaltered. 3. No profit is made. If you read this guide please drop me a line at vash@section-9.com Suggestions, complaints and criticisms (provided they are constructive and not merely 'You suck!' and the like), compliments, comments are all welcome. Any translation notes or comments of mine are enclosed in curly braces {}. If you feel these are redundant, or maybe if there are not enough of them let me know. ii. Shameless Self-Promotion Also feel free to check out the FAQ for the first Hanagumi Taisen Columns which was originally released for the Saturn. There are some references to that game in this one so it may be worth your while. I. What's new Added in the accidentally omitted battle modes. Also, the story mode translations for the main eight heroines are complete. Next are the four unlocked characters. II. Basics The rules of Columns are very simple. Try to establish as many links as possible. A link is where three or more gems of the same color are lined up vertically, horizontally or diagonally. The linked gems are then cleared, and any gems left unsupported drop down. The dropping gems can land and cause yet another link. When one link results in another link, this is called a chain, in this case a 2-chain, since two total links occurred. A link that causes another two links is a 3-chain, and so on. However, if two separate links occur simultaneously, it is not considered a chain. Hanagumi Columns offer a twist. There is a ki meter, and when it fills, the player is presented a LIPS choice. Normally, when first filled, the choices are, from top to bottom: Attack, Store, Defend. Attack sends a number of gems to the other player, which are not immediately destructible. They first appear as dice with a counter, and for each move that opponent makes, the counter decreases by one. The counter is also decreased an additional one when a link is made in an adjacent spot and this decrement is spread throughout all connecting counter dice. The number of gems sent and the number of the counter is specific to that character's traits, which are described in detail in section IV. Defend removes a set number of rows from the bottom. The number of rows is different from character to character. Store keeps the filled meter for a bigger attack later. The maximum number of stored meters depends on the battle mode chosen at the onset of a match. Battle modes are described in detail in section III. The more levels used in a attack, the more powerful it becomes, in the form of more gems, higher counter numbers, or both. Except for Lightning mode, when the maximum number of storable levels is reached, the LIPS choices change slightly, to become: Attack, All-Color Gem, Defend. Choosing All-Color Gem releases three Silver Hearts, and when they come in contact with a gem directly below, all gems of that color are destroyed. If the gems are stacked so high that only one or two of the hearts are showing when they make contact, only the visible hearts will be used up. Any hearts off the top of the screen will then drop and remove gems of the color that it comes in contact with. This is useful to keep in mind, and vital in some of the solutions of the Puzzle mode. On to the game itself. Once you press start you are presented with five choices. They are described as follows (by picture). Oogami - One player modes Kanna and Sumire - Two player modes Maria and Orihime - Network mode Sakura and Kohran - Options Iris and Reni - Presents One Player Modes (with appropriate image, from upper left to lower right) ================ Shonen Red vs. Benitokage (Oogami working as the mogiri) ------------------------- This replaces the first game's Cinderella mode. It's Teigeki's next production, and now the girls are competing for the role of Shonen Red. Story Mode (The Hanagumi on stage) ---------- Short stories in the same manner of episodes in the main game, centered around one of the protagonists. However in this case, puzzle battles and fishing things out of stacks of gems seem to be a part of everyday life as these are referred to as such in the stories. :) Director's Chair (Yoneda and Kaede looking on from backstage) ---------------- This is initially locked. The four secret characters (well, four if you count the Sannin Musume as one) compete to determine who will direct Shonen Red vs. Benitokage. Once you face a hidden character twice in Shonen Red mode as your final challenge, that character will be available for this mode. Free Battle Mode (Hanagumi group photo) ---------------- This is initially locked. Choose your character and choose the opponent the CPU will control. Endless ------- Endless is a basic scoring game with no set rules. Just last as long as you can. When the meter fills, the silver hearts are released and you can use them to break all gems of the same color it lands on. Puzzle ------ Puzzle scenarios in groups of nine separated by rank of difficulty. Some of the puzzles are now very structured and have very specific solutions. Two Player Mode --------------- Pretty self-explanatory. You and an opponent pick a protagonist and have at it. Network Mode ------------ Unfortunately, I do not have any information on this mode as I do not have a Japanese user account set up. It seems you need one to be able to play online. Options ------- Sound: Stereo, Mono Vibration: On, Off Difficulty: Beginner, Normal, Hard (locked), Strongest (locked) Gems: Normal, Skeleton (transparent), Jean-Paul (locked), Koubu (locked), Teigeki Markers (locked) Panic: On/Off (locked) Review: Puzzle, Event, Sound (All locked) Vibration is for the force-feedback devices. Panic mode normally initiates in a game when a match goes on for a long time. Indestructible mines will begin to appear in place of some time- release gems. Setting this to on means Panic Mode starts from the beginning. Review: Puzzle (locked) ------ Complete Shonen Red and Director's Chair modes to have the appropriate character's puzzle art appear here. The puzzle art is what appears as you play behind the gems. Event (locked) ----- Art from the story modes unique to that story, including the final picture. Complete story mode with a character to get that character's art. Sound (locked) ----- Here you can listen to the remixed Columns themes for the characters, as well as other music that is heard in the game. Presents -------- For the top eight boxes, once you complete Shonen Red vs. Benitokage mode with a character you had not beaten the mode with before, that character will appear here to tell you what you've unlocked. Here's what each character unlocks: Shinguuji Sakura Puzzle Art Review Kanzaki Sumire Event Art Review Maria Tachibana Hard Difficulty Iris Chateaubriand Jean-Paul gems Li Kohran Free Battle Mode Kirishima Kanna Panic Mode Orihime Soletta Sound Review Reni Milchstrasse Teigeki Marker gems For the third row, once you complete Director's Chair with a new character, they will appear here. Yoneda Ikki Strongest Difficulty Sannin Musume Lightning Battle Mode (Kazegumi style) Fujieda Kaeda Koubu gems Kayama Yuuichi Shadow Battle Mode (Tsukigumi style) The last row will appear when the character is unlocked for story mode. Yoneda Ikki appears here after The Sannin Musume story is completed. The Sannin Musume seem to appear after Orihime's story is completed (not 100% sure about this, could use verification). Fujieda Ayame appears after Leni's story is completed (also not 100% sure about this, could use verification). Kayama Yuuichi appears after Li Kohran's story is completed. III. You lose the ability to defend after Level 2, so there is some risk to be taken in storing up for a Level 4 attack. ------------------- Locked Battle Modes ------------------- These modes are unlocked in the ways described above when discussing the game options. The meter fills more quickly than three meters would in Forest Mode, but there is some risk involved as it's harder to obtain a quick level for defense. Lightning --------- ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,%%, %% %%"""""""%%"""""""""%%" %% ,,,,, %% ,,,,, ," %% """"" %% """"" ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, %% %% %% %%"""""%%""""""%% %%,,,,,%%,,,,,,%% % %% %, "%%%%%%%%%%%%" Maximum Attack Levels: 4 All-color Gems available at MAX: No Maximum Defense Levels: 0 First Filled Meter Starts at: Level 1 Ki Meter Speed: 100% Bonus This mode is for going all out. Sacrifice all defense for attack power. Not even any chance for All-Color Gems. Your meters do fill that much more quickly though. A definite High Risk, High Return mode. IV. Character Traits ====================== Regulars ======== Shinguuji Sakura ---------------- Attack: Lines Dropped Level 1: 2 Level 2: 4 Level 3: 6 Level 4: 8 Drop Counter Level 1-4: 4 Defense: Lines Removed Level 1: 2 Level 2: 4 Level 3: 6 As expected, the main character is usually well-rounded in abilities. Sakura adjusts well to most strategies. Kanzaki Sumire -------------- Attack: Lines Dropped Level 1: 2 Level 2: 3 Level 3: 4 Level 4: 5 Drop Counter Level 1: 4 Level 2: 6 Level 3: 8 Level 4: 9 Defense: Lines Removed Level 1: 3 Level 2: 4 Level 3: 5 Sumire is fairly well-rounded in ability as well, however she lends herself more towards storing power levels for bigger attacks. Maria Tachibana --------------- Attack: Lines Dropped Level 1: 4 Level 2: 5 Level 3: 6 Level 4: 7 Drop Counter Level 1: 2 Level 2: 3 Level 3: 4 Level 4: 5 Defense: Lines Removed Level 1: 4 Level 2: 5 Level 3: 6 Maria's attack drops a lot of gems, but they don't last very long. A successful strategy for Maria is to save up for one big attack, then relentlessly attach with one level attacks. Iris Chateaubriand ------------------ Attack: Lines Dropped Level 1: 3 Level 2: 4 Level 3: 5 Level 4: 6 Drop Counter Level 1-4: 3 Defense: Lines Removed Level 1: 5 Level 2: 6 Level 3: 7 Iris clearly has the strongest defense. While not the strongest attacker, she can use levels as needed to just outlast her opponent. At level 3, her defense clears about three-fourths of the playfield! As you can imagine, Wind mode Iris can be difficult to deal with as she can clear her playfield all the more quickly. Mountain mode works well for her as well. Li Kohran --------- Attack: Lines Dropped Level 1: 1 Level 2: 2 Level 3: 3 Level 4: 4 Drop Counter Level 1-4: 9 Defense: Lines Removed Level 1: 2 Level 2: 4 Level 3: 6 Although she drops the least amount of gems, her dropped gems last for nine moves, even at just Level 1. A strategy similar to Maria by saving up for one level three attack and then relentlessly attacking works just as well for Kohran. This is easier in Wind mode, possibly her best mode. Shadow works well for her as well. Kirishima Kanna --------------- Attack: Lines Dropped Level 1: 2 Level 2: 4 Level 3: 6 Level 4: 8 Drop Counter Level 1: 2 Level 2: 4 Level 3: 6 Level 4: 8 Defense: Lines Removed Level 1: 1 Level 2: 2 Level 3: 3 Kanna is best at saving up for big attacks. Defending is practically pointless unless desparate. If at level 3 and blocks need to be cleared right away, it's better to opt for the silver heart gems. The offensively geared modes such as Fire (and Lightning if you're willing to gamble) work very well for Kanna. Soletta Orihime --------------- Attack: Lines Dropped Level 1: 1 Level 2: 3 Level 3: 5 Level 4: 7 Drop Counter Level 1: 8 Level 2: 7 Level 3: 6 Level 4: 5 Defense: Lines Removed Level 1: 1 Level 2: 3 Level 3: 5 Orihime's attacks at each level strike a balance between the gems' timer and the amount of gems. As she drops more, they remain a just a little bit less. At level 1, she's almost like Kohran, and at level 4, she's almost like Maria. She seems pretty versatile. Reni Milchstrasse ----------------- Attack: Lines Dropped Level 1: 3 Level 2: 3 Level 3: 3 Level 4: 5 Drop Counter Level 1: 3 Level 2: 6 Level 3: 9 Level 4: 9 Defense: Lines Removed Level 1: 2 Level 2: 4 Level 3: 6 With the exception of Level 4, Reni always drops the same amount of gems, but the timer increases drastically with each level. Reni does well in Mountain and Shadow modes. Unlocked Characters =================== Fujieda Kaede -------------- Attack: Lines Dropped Level 1: 2 Level 2: 4 Level 3: 6 Level 4: 8 Drop Counter Level 1: 5 Level 2: 5 Level 3: 5 Level 4: 5 Defense: Lines Removed Level 1: 1 Level 2: 3 Level 3: 5 Kaede plays exactly as her sister Ayame did in the first game. She is pretty strong overall but has one glaring weakness. The pattern she drops on her opponent are columns of identical color (like Ryu from Super Puzzle Fighter Turbo 2), so if the opponent can last long enough for them to return to normal gems, they eliminate themselves and fill the opponent's meter. Sannin Musume ( Yuri, Kasumi, Tsubaki ) --------------------------------------- Attack: Lines Dropped Level 1: 3 Level 2: 4 Level 3: 5 Level 4: 6 Drop Counter Level 1: 4 Level 2: 5 Level 3: 5 Level 4: 5 Defense: Lines Removed Level 1: 1 Level 2: 3 Level 3: 5 Not as much talking in unison this time out, but there are relatively unchanged from the last game. Yoneda Ikki ----------- Attack: Lines Dropped Level 1: 2 Level 2: 3 Level 3: 4 Level 4: 5 Drop Counter Level 1: 4 Level 2: 5 Level 3: 6 Level 4: 7 Defense: Lines Removed Level 1: 1 Level 2: 3 Level 3: 5 Although he doesn't look overly powerful, Yoneda's strength lies in his drop pattern. It is obnoxiously shuffled, and it doesn't tend to eliminate itself much if at all. A relentless Yoneda is tough to deal with. Plus, his defense is as strong as Iris'. Kayama Yuuichi -------------- Attack: Lines Dropped Level 1: 3 Level 2: 4 Level 3: 5 Level 4: 6 Drop Counter Level 1: Special Level 2: Special Level 3: Special Level 4: Special Defense: Lines Removed Level 1: 1 Level 2: 3 Level 3: 5 The timers for Kayama's gems work completely differently from any other character. For example look at this makeshift Ascii diagram for a level 4 Kayama attack on an empty play field: 777777 666666 555555 444444 333333 222222 Those are the counter numbers for the drop. Shave one row per level off the top for each level under 4. This unorthodox method, coupled with a thoroughly scrambled drop pattern makes Kayama arguably the strongest character overall in the game. V. Puzzle Mode ============== Coming soon. VI. Story mode translations =========================== LIPS Choices preceded by T appear after the LIPS timer reaches the halfway mark. LIPS Choices preceded by D disappear after the LIPS timer reaches the halfway mark. When ever dialogue contains a tilde mark... ~ ...like this... ~ ...It means the dialogue for a character is separated by a prompt to press a button to continue. Each positive response for the protagonist gives a bonus to any Matches or Puzzles. For a Match, it's a bonus to the speed of the meter filling. For a Puzzle, it's a bonus to the time limit. The upper limit for match ki meter bonuses is 200%, and the upper limit for time bonuses is 90 seconds. However, unlike Hanagumi Taisen Columns 1, where you really only had to worry about how your responses affected the protagonist, now your responses also affect other people in the scene. If you offend/anger/discourage/hurt the feelings of the other person, their meter will fill more quickly in a match, or you are given a time limit penalty. If you fail the puzzle or lose a match, the effects of that other person are slowly made more positive by 10% each loss in a match, and 30 seconds in a failed puzzle. Shinguuji Sakura ( "T-this is terrible, Oogami-san!" ) ---------------- Sometime during the 14th year of Taisho, it was about the time of midday when things suddenly begain... Oogami: ( Well now, time to go to lunch... ) ~ ( A gunshot......?! ) ~ ( I better look into this... ) Sakura: O-Oogami-san! Oogami: Sakura-kun, what in the world was that gunshot... Sakura: It's Iris... Iris! Oogami: Iris? Sakura-kun, please calm down and tell me... Sakura: She had fallen and she was bleeding! Oogami: ( Wha... ) ~ ( It can't be... ) LIPS Choice: 1. Where did you see her fall? (Sakura +1) 2. Maybe she was just sleeping? ( Choice 1 ) Oogami: Where was it? That... you saw Iris had fallen? Sakura: Oogami-san... Do you believe what I am telling you...? Oogami: It's only natural that I would, isn't it? Sakura: Thank you very much... ( End Choice 1 ) Oogami: Now then where was it? Sakura: Y-yes... In the dining hall. Oogami: Right, let's go Sakura-kun. Sakura: Right! ( Title Screen - "An Afternoon Event" ) Oogami: Sakura-kun... Iris is not here like you said... Sakura: Th-that can't be... I remember her on the floor right here... Oogami: ....Nn? Sakura: What is it? Oogami: On the floor... A haphazard cleaning attempt... Sakura: ...Certainly, an attempt to clean up the blood. Sumire: What is this? What might you two be doing? Sakura: Ah, Sumire-san. ~ Oogami-san, what should we do? Should we ask Sumire-san about this? Oogami: We don't want to cause a panic, so for the time being let's keep this to ourselves. Sumire: What is it? That you are so stealthily sharing with each other? Oogami: Th-that is... LIPS Choice: 1. Laugh it off. (Sumire -1) 2. Change the subject. 3. Ask Sumire what she's going to eat. (Choice 1) Oogami: Hahahahahahah... It's nothing. Right, Sakura-kun? Sakura: Y-yes. It really is nothing at all. Honestly, absolutely nothing. Sumire: But were you not looking at me? ~ To hide something from me... is something I find distasteful! (End Choice 1) ( Choice 2 ) Oogami: Sumire-kun. How have you been feeling lately? Sumire: How am I feeling? Why do you ask? Oogami: Well, nothing, just... Sakura: Well, just this, how your stomach feels... Sumire: Why is it that the two of you are suddenly concerned with how my stomach feels? Sakura: Just that... so I know what food you would want to gather together. Sumire: Why would you think I would want to do such a vulgar thing? Oogami: S-sumire-kun... Please calm down... Sakura: I-I'm sorry... Sumire: ...Well, that will be sufficient. By the way... Oogami: What is it? Sumire: Won't you answer the question that I posed a while ago? Oogami: ( ...I wanted to divert her attention away from that topic... ) Sumire: What is it that you are trying to hide from me? ( End Choice 2 ) Oogami: Y-you misunderstand! Sakura: That's right! We were just investigating... Sumire: Investigating? Sakura: N-no, nothing! Sumire: Then why do you keep cutting yourself off? ~ Whatever it takes, I will make you tell me what it is! Match: Sakura vs. Sumire Sumire: I have been defeated. I will acknowledge this loss in a fair fashion. ~ But I feel left out... It looks like I will be excluded... Sakura: Sumire-san... Oogami: ( Has this has turned into something hurtful...? ) ~ Sumire-kun, have you seen Iris? Sumire: Iris is it? I have not seen her today. Oogami: The truth is that she... Orihime: Ah, Sumire-san. Is this is where you've been? Sumire: What is it? Orihime: You have a phone call. Sumire: My... who could it be? If you would excuse me for a moment. Oogami: Ah, Sumire-kun... ~ ( She left... she looked hurt, so I'll give her a full explanation later ) Orihime: Now then, it's time for my siesta. Oogami: Ah, Orihime-kun! Orihime: What is it? Oogami: You haven't seen Iris, have you? Orihime: Iris? I guess I haven't seen her today. Oogami: Is that so... Orihime: But, I did see something interesting earlier. Oogami: Something funny? Orihime: It was something unusual. Sakura: Oogami-san... How do you think we should handle this? Oogami: Hmm... I want to hear what Orihime has to say... Orihime: What is that you two are talking about so secretly? ~ This is not interesting. I am leaving! Oogami: Ah, Orihime-kun... LIPS Choice: 1. Go after her. (Orihime +1) 2. Let her go. ( Choice 1 ) Oogami: Ah, wait up! Orihime-kun! Sakura: She left didn't she... Oogami: Just as I thought I want to hear what she was talking about... After her! Sakura: Y-yes! Orihime: My... Ensign-san, Sakura-san, what's the matter that you're so out of breath? Oogami: Orihime-kun, About what you were talking about earlier... Orihime: My, ensign-san. Just as I thought, it looks like you wanted to listen to what I had to say. Sakura: Orihime-san, what was it that you saw? Orihime: What do you think it was? Come on, guess. Oogami: I understand, but could you please quickly tell us that "interesting thing" you saw? Orihime: No,no. I won't tell you for free. Oogami: Eh? Orihime: Before a siesta I like to relax the body. So then... ~ If you massage my shoulders, then I'll tell you what the "interesting thing" was. Sakura: Orihime-san! Oogami: Alright... if I massage your shoulders will that do? Orihime: Just as I expected, Oogami-san! Now then, please begin. (End Choice 1) Puzzle: Eliminate 40 gems in the time allotted. Orihime: Hm, ensign-san is good at this. Ever think about opening a business? Oogami: ...Now then, Orihime-kun. Won't you please tell us what it was that you saw? Orihime: The truth is Maria-san... Oogami: ( Maria...? Ah! Now that she mentions her name, I remember that there was a gunshot... ) Sakura: What was it about Maria-san? Orihime: Maria-san was loitering around the kitchen with a fierce look on her face. ~ And she was grumbling to herself... Now that I mention it, she was carrying a gun! Sakura: That can't be... Maria-san... Orihime: It was the first time I had seen Maria-san so agitated. Sakura: Oogami-san! Oogami: Orihime-kun... When was it that you saw this? Orihime: It was when I was en route to telling Sumire-san about her telephone call. Oogami: ( It can't be that Maria... ) Orihime: Well, time for my siesta so please excuse me. Sakura: Oogami-san... Oogami: Sakura-kun, quickly let's go to the kitchen. Maria: C-captain... And Sakura... Oogami: Maria... What are you doing here? Maria: A little cooking... Sakura: ...But there is no fire is there? Or any ingredients... Maria: I just got here, so I am only about to start. Oogami: But Orihime-kun said that you have been here for while? Maria: Th-that is... Sakura: You're being suspicious, Maria-san. Oogami: This is certainly not like Maria... this... LIPS Choice: 1. Confront her harshly. 2. Ask her about it kindly. (Maria +1) 3. Leave it at that. ( Choice 2 ) Oogami: Maria... How about if you told me alone about what you were doing? Maria: Captain... Sakura: .... Maria: Thank you very much, Captain. But I regret that I cannot answer you. ~ It is a matter of privacy... Oogami: ( Maria... ) ~ Certainly there are things that people would want to keep to themselves... Sakura: Oogami-san! Oogami: However, in this case there is something that I must know... The matter of the gunshot earlier... Maria: As I feared you heard it... That was... Sakura: Maria-san, that... Oogami: How about this, Maria-san. To be totally fair, let's decide this by virtue of a match. Maria: A match... you say? Oogami: You do not want to answer as a matter of privacy... but in this way I may be able to get the answer from you. ~ If I win, you'll answer me. And if I lose, then you don't have to reveal anything. Maria: Captain... Sakura: Oogami-san... Oogami: How about it, Maria? Maria: Understood... I accept this match. Oogami: Right, I challenge you Maria! Match: Sakura vs. Maria Oogami: Now then, as promised please tell me... Maria: I'm sorry Captain. I... ~ The truth is... I was so started by a cockroach that I fired my gun! Oogami: Eh....? Maria: I was here getting ready to cook when sudddenly I head the sound of a cockroach scuttling and then it came flying at me... Sakura: I understand, Maria-san. If it were me I would have fainted. Maria: And so by reflex the gun... Oogami: S-so that's what happened... Sakura: So Maria-san, what happened to the cooking ingredients? Maria: I disposed of all of them. The thought of that cockroach crawling all over them was so... Oogami: ...The situation is understandable, but I wished you would told me about it sooner... Maria: The fear of cockroaches... that is something I have reason to share with everyone. Oogami: I understand... I will not tell anyone else about it. Sakura: Nor will I... Maria: Thank you, both of you. ~ Excuse me, but I'm going to lie down in my room for a while. Oogami: Yes, that's important... Sakura: It must have been a great shock to Maria-san. Oogami: But for the time being I'm glad that was the reason for the gunshot. Narration: And then... Oogami: ...Now there is just the matter of Iris to uncover... Sakura: Bleeding as she was, where could she have gone? Oogami: Sakura-kun, could you tell me about it one more time, so that maybe you can remember more... Kaede: My, what are you two doing? Sakura: Ah, Kaede-san. ~ Oogami-san, it would be good to talk honestly with Kaede-san about this, wouldn't it? Oogami: Hm... LIPS Choice: 1. Talk to her honestly. 2. Don't talk to her honestly. 3. Ask her about Iris. ( Choice 3 ) Oogami: For the time being, Let's just ask her what she knows about Iris... ~ Kaede-san, have you seen Iris? Kaeda: Eh? Oogami: If you've seen Iris... Kaede: ...... Sakura: You haven't seen her? Kaede: I-Iris? ...I have seen her but... Sakura: Oogami-san... the way that Kaede is acting is suspicious isn't it? Oogami: Now that you mention it does seem so... Sakura: ...You aren't hiding anything are you? Kaede: Wh-what are you saying, Sakura? Oogami: Looks like you know something... It would be good if you told us. Kaeda: ...... Sakura: Suspicious... without a doubt Kaede-san is hiding something isn't she! Oogami: Yes. It seems that way to me as well. Sakura: ...And so the two of us should thoroughly question her! Oogami: Eh? Sakura: Perhaps Kaede-san had something to do with this! Oogami: Something to do with it you say? Sakura: Now then, Oogami-san. Let's go! Puzzle: Eliminate 50 gems in the time alloted. Kaede: I-I understand. I've lost to you two... Oogami: Know then, could you tell us what you know? Sakura: What did you see? Kaeda: I saw Iris a little while ago. But... Oogami: But? Kaede: To be exact, I saw Iris being carried by Kanna who was running... Sakura: Iris was carried you say? Kaede: Yes... Oogami: A-at that time, what did Iris' condition appear to be? Kaede: Completely exhausted... ~ It was from a distance, but it looked as though she had stains of red paint. Sakura: That was blood! Certainly it was the same that I saw!! Kaede: It can't be... Oogami: That I didn't say anything about it before was no good... Maria: It's alright... I will undertake the ungracious tasks. So the Captain can do the tasks he enjoys. Oogami: The others are alright. I will just undertake enforcing my will more. Maria: That sounds good. Oogami: Now, let's continue the night watch. We can't let Kohran go unfound. Maria: Right. Oogami: This is strange isn't it... Where did Kohran disappear to? Maria: Captain... For now why don't we search the basement? Oogami: Alright. Iris: Now, Iris is going! ~ Jean-paul! Jean-paul where are you? Kohran: Well, nothing for it now... Over there. Iris: Where? Kohran: Over there. Oogami: ...Cardboard? Iris: I said I want Jean-paul! { There is a pun here that won't translate. "Danbouru" means cardboard, which rhymes with "Jyanpouru" or Jean-paul. So Iris says she wants "Jyanpouru" not "Danbouru" when Kohran points it out. } Kohran: Look closely. Iris: Ah... Jean-paul... Kohran: I was still in the middle of things... Iris: Jean-paul... a change of clothes... Kanna: Oh no... She found it. Sakura: I'm glad we went shopping as quickly as we did. Yuri: There was still a seat cushion to get for Jean-paul... Maria: Iris... I'm sorry. Everyone thought you would be happy with this... Reni: Sorry... Kohran: It was bad of us, wasn't it... Iris: Mm. ~ Everyone, I love you! ( Last picture - "We'll always be together, Jean-paul." ) Li Kohran ( "I'm me and you're you and you... who are you?" ) --------- Sometime during the 14th year of Taisho, the last quarter of the moon shone down on Teigeki during the early night... *explosion* Oogami: W-what was that?! ~ Anyway, I better check it out... ~ Hm? That's Kohran... Kohran: Ah, Oogami-han! It's terrible! It's terrible! Oogami: What's the matter Kohran? Does it have to do with that explosion? Kohran: The truth is my Irekae-kun exploded... LIPS Choice: 1. Again... 2. What kind of machine is it? (Kohran +1) (Choice 2) Oogami: What kind of machine is it? This Irekae-kun you mentioned. Kohran: You were listening well, Oogami-han! ~ It's a personality converting machine. Oogami: Wh-what would you use that for> Something like that... Kohran: There are many uses. ~ For example, if you needed something that required Kanna's strength you could switch with her... ~ Or if you needed some official work done you could switch with Kasumi-han. There are many possibilities. Oogami: The physical aspect I can understand, but wouldn't you still have your own knowledge about paperwork? Kohran: Damn... You would have to use your own ability for paperwork! Oogami: Ah man... Kohran: I can't believe my Irekae-kun exploded... Where could I have gone wrong? Oogami: Well, no one was hurt right? Kohran: Oh no, I forgot! Something has happened to Kayama-han!! Oogami: What. Kayama! Kohran: Kayama was in the machine when it exploded and he was thrown clear... Oogami: Wh-what did you say? That's terrible! Kohran: Oogami-han! Together, let's look for Kayama-han's personality! ( Title Screen - "A Desire for Metamorphosis" ) Sakura: Yo, Oogami! ~ What are you up to? Standing around here. Kohran: Sakura-han....? Oogami: Sakura-kun....? Sakura: Hey, Kohran. Your invention is won-derful. Kohran: I-It can't be... Oogami: Is that you Kayama? Sakura (as Kayama): Sakura's body is won-derful. Her hakama is breezy though. { Kayama sometimes tends to say one sentence long and methodically, then the next at top speed as done here. } Oogami: K-Kayama... Sakura: Why so flustered, Oogami? ~ For someone looking for me looking like a military man, no one will expect me to look like this. Kohran: K-Kayama-han! Wait right here! Oogami: Ah, Kohran? Sakura (as Kayama): She left didn't she. Adios, Kohran-san! ~ Besides, how truly happy I am... to share a young woman's body. { I could not think of a way of putting that in English without some sort of connotation... } And so Oogami, I am able to hug you as well. LIPS Choice: 1. Certainly not! 2. Well, if that's what you want... (Time Over) Sakura (as Kayama): Hahahahahahahahahah! I'm joking, I'm joking. You look so flustered. (End Time Over) Kohran: Thanks for waiting! ~ I've brought my repairing machine, "Andou-kun!" Sakura (as Kayama): Andou-kun... What is it that you have grown? { The kanji used for "Andou-kun" literraly means "peaceful wisteria" } Kohran: It's the English word "Undo!" It's a clever pun, Kayama-han. Sakura (as Kayama): Truly deserving of great praise. Oogami: That machine will return things to normal? Kohran: That's right... I created it in case something like this should occur. Sakura (as Kayama): Truly a way to "go back where you started." Oogami: ( If one wasn't sure about "Irekae-kun" then wouldn't it have been simpler to not have used it...? ) Kohran: Now then, Oogami-han please give me a hand. Oogami: Right. Kayama... we'll soon return you back. Puzzle: Eliminate the sparkling gems in the time allotted. Kohran: That should do it! Sakura: Ah, what...? What am I doing here? Oogami: Sakura-kun...? Is that really you Sakura? Sakura: Yes? What are you talking about, Oogami-san? Kohran: Ah, nothing. Must be your imagination, Sakura-han. ~ Come on, let's get going. Oogami: Y-yes. See you, Sakura-kun. Sakura: Yes... Kohran: What? Oogami: What's the matter? Kohran: Kayama-han's body is not here... Where could it have disappeared to? Oogami: Maybe when we returned him he left? ~ If that's true then it's fine but... Sumire: Yo, you two. Oogami: Sumire-kun...? I mean, Kayama? Sumire (as Kayama): Exactly. Just as I would expect of my best friend, whatever shape I take he recognizes me. Kohran: Sumire-han doesn't say "Yo!" in her greeting... Kayama (as Kayama): But, it's won-derful isn't it... Sumire-san's body... The obi is bound a bit tight though... { An obi is the belt-like garment that binds a kimono } Oogami: Now then, Kohran. The Andou-kun. Sumire (as Kayama): Now wait a minute, Oogami. Can't you let me have a little fun with this? LIPS Choice: 1. That's fine. 2. That won't do. (Kohran +1) (Choice 2) Oogami: That won't do. Kohran has gone through great trouble to bring her machine for this. Kohran: That's right, that's right. Sumire: Hahahaha... I'm joking, I'm joking. Well, hurry and get me back. Kohran: Right, let's go, Oogami-han. Oogami: Understood. Puzzle: Eliminate the sparkling gems in the time allotted. Kohran: Right, back to normal! Sumire: M-my... I wanted to go to the basement pool... ~ Why am I in the salon? Kohran: M-maybe you were sleepwalking? Sumire: That is not the case! Why am I... Kohran: Whoops. We've got an urgent matter to attend to. Right, Oogami-han? Oogami: Y-yeah. Kohran: Sumire-han, well, see you later. Sumire: Ah, just a moment... Oogami: At this rate the damage just spreads to the next person... Kohran: Looks like it's no good unless we use Andou-kun on Kayama-han's body... Oogami: Well, let's quickly find Kayama's body... Orihime: What was that about me? Oogami: Kayama? Kohran: This time he's in Orihime's body? Orihime (as Kayama): Orihime's body is won-derful... This time there are no complaints. Orihime (as herself): How can you not complain about this! Oogami: Woah! Kohran: Wh-what? Orihime (as herself): For a Japanese man to be in my head is a very reason to complain about being unhappy! Orihime (as Kayama): Looks like this time it looks like it was only half-way... I am sorry, Orihime-san. Kohran: An incomplete transferrence has taken place... dual personalities. Orihime (as herself): Hurry up and do something! LIPS Choice: 1. Right, leave it to me! 2. This is pretty funny like this... (Orihime -1) 3. Kohran, quickly the device... ( Choice 2 ) Oogami: Dual personalities... This is pretty funny like this... Orihime (as herself): Don't be so irresponsible! Just as I would expect of a Japanese man. Orihime (as Kayama): Orihime-san... Please don't hate Japanese men so much... Kohran: This really is funny... It's just like manzai. { Manzai is a comedy routine which was especially popular during the time of the series. It originated in the Kansai regions of Japan, and was a success when it came to the major metropolitan areas of Tokyo and such. Its comedy is based on the conversation of two people, very similar to that of the American duo of Abbott and Costello. The conversation was usually based on everyday situations, which may be part of the reason for its success. The Kansai origins of a popular comedy of that time might explain why they chose to have a lighthearted, "mood-making" character such as Kohran speak with the Kansai dailect. } ( End Choice 2 ) ( Choice 3 ) Oogami: Kohran, quickly the device... Kohran: But, this is pretty funny... I'd regret changing this back to normal. ( End Choice 3 ) Orihime (as herself): Kohran! Kohran: Now, now... don't explode like that. Well get you back to normal with Andou-kun. Oogami: Right, let's get started, Kohran. Kohran: Right! Puzzle: Eliminate the sparkling gems in the time allotted. Kohran: That should return things back to normal. Orihime: So it seems. I don't feel any trace of Kayama-san. Oogami: All's well that ends well. Orihime: All is not well! Who in the world is responsible for such a thing to occur? Kohran: W-who it could be, I don't know. Oogami-han, do you know? Oogami: W-well... Orihime: When I find the person I'm going to pound them! Kohran: Well, Oogami-han, quickly on to the next! Oogami: H-hey... Why are you dragging me off like this? Orihime: Ah, where are you going? Oogami: Well, where could Kayama's body have gone? Kohran: Ah, it looks like Kanna-han is in the kitchen. Oogami: Right, let's go talk to Kanna. ~ Hey, Kanna. I've got something to ask you about... Kanna: By any chance would it have to do with Kayama? Kohran: That's right... But how did you guess? Kanna: Well because... Kanna (as Kayama): Yo, Oogami! This time the trouble has taken place with Kanna's body. Oogami: Kayama... Kohran: It looks like he entered and they are sharing it... Kanna: ...And that's why. Hurry up and do something! LIPS Choice: 1. For the time being return Kanna. (Kanna +1) 2. Continue to look for Kayama's body. ( Choice 1 ) Oogami: For the time being, let's return Kanna. For her to be like this is not good for the mind. Kanna: Sorry... But, as I'd expect the Captain is dependable. Kohran: Well then, should we get started, Oogami-han? Oogami: Right, let's do it. Puzzle: Eliminate the sparkling gems in the time allotted. Kohran: That should do it! How's that? Kanna-han. Kanna: Oh... My head doesn't feel muddled. There doesn't seem to be any trace of Kayama. Oogami: Well, well, looks like she's relieved. Kanna: By the way, Captain, Kohran... You two wouldn't have anything to do with this weird event, would you? Kohran: I-I don't know what are you talking about? Right, Oogami-han? Oogami: Y-yeah... Kanna: Hmmmmmmmm... Maria: Ah, Captain. ~ Kayama-san was found collapsed in the corridor so has was brought to the medical office. ~ I didn't see anything wrong with him, so he should be fine soon. Kohran: The medical office you say? Oogami: Let's go, Kohran! Maria: Ah..... Iris: Yo, Oogami. Oogami: What? Iris...why are you here? Iris: I heard Maria-san say before that my body was carried down to the medical office so I came to see it. Kohran: I-Iris is speaking like Kayama-han? Iris (as Kayama): This time... there is nothing... nothing fun about this at all... Kayama: Nnnnn... ~ What? What is Iris doing here? Kohran: And Iris is there! Kayama (as Iris): What, what? There is another Iris? Iris (as Kayama): Hey, Iris-san. Is my body a good fit? Kayama (as Iris): Eh? Eh? Kohran: This is what we were planning for with both bodies present... this is our chance, Oogami-han! LIPS Choice: 1. Right, the Andou-kun! (Kohran +1) Kohran: Right! Puzzle: Eliminate the sparkling gems in the time allotted. Kohran: How's that? Have we returned everything back to normal? Iris: What? Iris is back... Kayama: Hmmm... As I thought, my own body is won-derful. Oogami: Phew... With this everything is settled. Kohran: All's well that ends well. Narration: Later that night... Oogami: Today was quite a struggle... ~ Yes. Kohran: Sorry about the intruding on your evening... Oogami: What is it, Kohran? Kohran: The truth is, I've just completed Irekae-kun Mark II... Oogami: Eeee? Kohran: Ah, don't worry. This time it won't explode. Now then, switch on! Oogami: Woah! Kohran (as Oogami): H-hey, what am I doing standing up? { Kohran as Oogami means the silent first-person character. :) } Oogami (as Kohran): It's a success, Oogami-han! The switch is a success! { Oogami as Kohran means a rare non-animation spoken line. :) } Kohran (as Oogami): What did you say? Oogami (as Kohran): Well then, until later, I leave it to you. Kohran (as Oogami): Eh? Sumire: Kohran! We have a matter to discuss with you... Orihime: It was all Kohran's changing invention! Kanna: This time you're not getting away. Kohran (as Oogami): W-wait just a minute... It's me, It's Oogami! Sumire: At this time to be making such clumsy lies is unsightly, Kohran. Orihime: We're going to give you a full talking-to. Kanna: Now then, Kohran. Come forth... Oogami (as Kohran): But I said... Sumrie, Orihime, Kanna: Explanations are useless! ( Last picture - "Don't underestimate the power of science!" ) Kirishima Kanna ( "I'm staaaarving..." ) --------------- Sometime during the 14th year of Taisho, the sounds of midday floated towards the sky. If was like any other day at noon... Oogami: ( Well now, what will I have for lunch today? ) ~ ( What's this? What are the others doing here in the dining hall? ) Sakura: Ah, Oogami-san! Something is the matter with Kanna! LIPS Choice: 1. Are you alright, Kanna?! (Kanna +1) 2. What did Kanna do now? 3. Just how serious is it? (Choice 1) Oogami: Are you alright, Kanna?! Kanna: Eh? There's nothing wrong right now... Oogami: Come on... Don't make a fool of me... Kanna: Well, but I'm happy that you were worried, Captain. Sakura: I'm sorry... I was exaggerating just a bit... (End Choice 1) Oogami: Well, what is the matter? Tsubaki: Well, the truth is Kanna... Iris: She won't eat her lunch. Kanna: Right... Today, I'm fasting. ( Title Screen - "I Won't Eat Until I Win" ) Oogami: What was that again? Orihime: It's a funny story. Kanna-san and Sumire-san are having a contest. Maria: It's like a dieting contest. It's reckless. { Maria's second sentence is "kotomo arou ni" and I'm only guessing "It's reckless" since I the closest I could find was "kotomonage" which means "careless." } Kanna: That Sumire... She looks at me like someone heavy and plump. { Kanna is using "yagaru" here which is typically used for showing a great deal of contempt or hatred for another's action(s) } Oogami: And so of course... Your reply was...this? Kanna: Yeah.... And so she's also trying to lose weight. Oogami: And so it's a diet contest... Kanna: I'm going to lose one kilogram for every one that Sumire gains. I'm not gonna lose... Sakura: But doing this is harmful to the body... Maria: Please say something about this, Captain. Oogami: ( Hmm... ) LIPS Choice: 1. I like Kanna the way she is. (Kanna +1) 2. Well, she sure could lose a little weight. (Choice 1) Oogami: I think she's overdoing it. I like Kanna the way she is. Kanna: Captain... ~ But I also have the will of a woman... I won't lose to that lazy woman! { Kanna's latest insult for Sumire eludes me: "saboten onna." The guess at lazy comes from the verb "saboru" but I'm not sure if that's what Kanna is saying, but it kind of fits in the context for I guess it's okay for now. There's also a bit of a pun here. The word for will she uses, "iji", can also mean "appetite." } Tsubaki: But still, not eating anything is bad for the body. ~ Besides, it's not like you at all. Kanna: What you say is true... Tsubaki: Here, here is something I bought from that village tea shop. Kanna: You want me to eat this? Tsubaki: Yes. Kanna: I appreciate the gesture, Tsubaki... But won't such a tasty thing be fattening? Tsubaki: It's alright. You can easily get rid of it with some exercise. Kanna: W-well, that's true... Tsubaki: So, please eat it. I'll go get you some tea right now... Kanna: No! Don't! I've decided I don't want to eat it! Tsubaki: Ah, is that so... You don't want it eat what I bought for you? Kanna: No, that's not it. What I said just now... Tsubaki: Well how about this? Let's have a match, and if you lose, you'll eat it. Kanna: Eh? Oogami: ( W-well, this has really become a big deal, hasn't it... ) Tsubaki: Is this... no good? Kanna: I-I got it. You want a match? We'll have one... Tsubaki: Okay! Well now let's start! Match: Kanna vs. Sannin Musume Kanna: Heheheh... I won, didn't I? Tsubaki: How disappointing... I thought she would eat it after the trouble I went through... Kanna: As soon as this contest with Sumire is over I'll eat as much as you give me. Tsubaki: But it won't mean anything then... Kanna: Ah? What did you just say? Tsubaki: N-no... nothing. ~ S-sorry, I just remembered something urgent I have to take care of, excuse me! *runs off* Orihime: Hoohoohoo... That's one down. Oogami: What do you mean, one down? Orihime: N-no, nothing at all. Iris: Hey, hey Kanna. Here... Kanna: What's this... A piece of cake, isn't it. Iris: Yes! Look tasty? Eheh. Kanna: The cake does look very tasty but... I won't eat it... Iris: The food Iris brought is bad? It's gross...? Kanna: I didn't say that... Timed LIPS T1. Right, I'll eat it for her. 2. Kanna, why don't you eat it. 3. This is certainly heartbreaking... ( Iris -1 ) (Choice T1) Oogami: Right, I'll eat it for her, since Iris is worried about her food. Iris: Oniichan can't eat it. It's for Kanna. ( End Choice T1 ) ( Choice 3 ) Oogami: Iris' leftovers... This is certainly heartbreaking... Iris: You're mean, oniichan. You hate Iris. ~ Doesn't matter. Oniichan can't have it, it's for Kanna. (End Choice 3) Kanna: So... so you said... But I'm in the middle of fasting... Iris: *sob* Iris got it just for Kanna... Kanna: Y-you're not going to cry are you? Iris: She said my food was gross... *sob* Kanna: Ah, alright. If I eat it, it will be okay alright! Iris: Really? Kanna: ...after the contest. Until then, we'll keep it cool in the refridgerator... Iris: No! You have to eat it now! Kanna: That's a selfish thing to say, Iris! This anger is irresponsible. Iris: Then, let's have a match... Kanna: Hey, hey... Iris: You had one with Tsubaki didn't you! You can't refuse Iris! Kanna: Alright... as you wish. Iris: Okay, you'll eat it if you lose, right? Kanna: Fine. I won't lose. Iris: Okay, here I go! ( End Choice T1 ) Match: Kanna vs. Iris Kanna: I win. That's what you wanted, right? Iris: Hmph. Iris is bored with this. Orihime: Yes, yes, and another falls out of the running. ~ Hoohoo... Looks like I'm going to win. Kanna: What are you going to win? Orihime: *gasp* ...It's best if Kanna doesn't know. ~ Now then, Kanna-san. Look at this. Kanna: Nn? Ice? Orihime: This is an Italian dessert. Cassatta Gelata. ~ By the way... ~ Do you know what's inside this Cassatta Gelata? Kanna: Hm... Captain, do you know? Timed LIPS 1. The sugar from fruit? (Orihime +1) 2. Almonds? (Orihime -1) T3. Why, pasta of course! ( Choice 1 ) Oogami: Maybe the sugar from fruit? I've never eaten it, though. Orihime: Why, ensign-san. What a surprise that you knew. ( End Choice 1 ) ( Choice 2 ) Oogami: Almonds, maybe? To change the consistency of the food, I bet. Orihime: Totally wrong! Stop talking about things you don't know about! ~ Cassata Gelata has the sugar from fruit inside. (End Choice 2) Kanna: Wow... That does sound good. Orihime: Doesn't it? Gobble it down without delay! { Paku - the opening and closing of the mouth, as in Paku-Paku, or Pac-man :) } Kanna: But... Orihime: But nothing! When you want to eat, eat... That's the very foundation of a human being! Kanna: No, I can't. I won't eat anything! Orihime: Why are you being so stubborn! If that's the way it will be I'll force you to eat it! Kanna: H-hey! Orihime, stop it! Orihime: I will not forgive this refusal! Kanna: Behave yourself! Match: Kanna vs Orihime Kanna: Heh... how's that? I saw what you were doing. I'm not naive. Orihime: How irritating. I was one away from winning. Oogami: What you were saying before about winning, what in the world was that about? Orihime: The truth is that Tsubaki, Iris, and I had a little bet going... ~ We bet that whoever got Kanna to eat would win a dinner. Sakura: So that's why everyone was trying to force her to eat... Maria: I'm shocked. To torture poor Kanna this way. Kanna: Hey you, Orihime! Orihime: Ah.... It's time for my siesta! Ciao, Kanna-san. *runs off* Kanna: Honestly... I'm going to have a little talk with Tsubaki and Iris after this. Maria: In any case, Kanna... To not eat anything is detrimental to your health. ~ A well-planned balanced nutrition is what dieting is about. Kanna: But... I don't want to lose ground in getting thinner... Maria: It will be fine. I'll plan the menu for you. Kanna: Thanks for the sentiment... But I've decided on not eating and this is the way I'm doing it until the end. Maria: Such stubborness is going to result in you getting sick, and then what will you do? LIPS Choice 1. Maria is right. (Maria +1) 2. I understand Kanna's feelings in this. (Choice 1) Oogami: Maria is right. This stubborness is going to end up with you getting sick. Maria: Ah, see... The Captain says so too, doesn't he? Kanna: No! I've said what I've felt about it... Maria: This won't be easy... Sakura: U-um... So why don't we do this? Oogami: Sakura-kun, what do you suggest? Sakura: Before, Orihime and the others we having matches to decide things, weren't they? ~ With a match, the way of doing things will be decided. Kanna: Alright... If I lose then my will wouldn't have been enough anyway. Maria: Alright... If Kanna agrees to it, then it's what we'll do. Kanna: Got it. Everyone's feelings about this make me happy, but I have my will as well... ~ So we'll decide this with a match. Maria: So if you lose, you'll give up this fasting? Kanna: Got it. Now then, let's go, Maria! Match: Kanna vs. Maria Kanna: Maria, at any rate please understand my feelings in this. Maria: I understand. But, overdoing it really is bad. Kanna: Yeah. Sakura: Now then, Kanna. This time, please have a match with me. Kanna: Eh? You too, Sakura? Sakura: Yes. Because your fasting is not good for your body. Kanna: I happy that your worried, but... Sakura: Will you accept, Kanna-san? LIPS Choice: 1. Just a moment. (Choice 1) Oogami: Just a moment. Sakura: What's the matter, Oogami-san? Oogami: At any rate, why don't we change this from a match. Yet another match would be boring, don't you think? Kanna: Well, yeah that's true. Sakura: Understood. Then, this time you'll need to use your head to compete. Kanna: Gah... Th=that's sneaky, Sakura! Sakura: Then you really want to lose. ~ That way you can do what you really want and eat big bowls of rice, right? Kanna: Alright, alright. Right, Captain, I leave it to you! Oogami: W-why me...? Kanna: You were the one who changed this from a match, weren't you? So it's your responsibility to take. Oogami: Tohoho... { I'll take that as the utterance of a man resigned to his fate } Sakura: Well, are you prepared? Please solve this puzzle. Puzzle: Get the gems under the line in the time allotted. (End Choice 1) (Time over) Kanna: Say no more. Get ready for this match! Sakura: Right, let's go! Kanna: Come on! Match: Kanna vs. Sakura ( End Time over ) Kanna: I win, Sakura! Sakura: ...It wasn't enough, was it. Kanna: For the time being the fast continues! Until Sumire gets plump. Sumire: What was that about me? Kanna: Oh, Sumire...Today I'm fasting! Sumire: Fasting you say... That is harmful to the body. Kanna: You're worried aren't you... I'm definitely not going to lose to you! Sumire: ...... Kanna: Ah? What's the matter, Sumire... You alright? Sumire: The truth is... I just weight myself ...I was heavier. Kanna: Eh? Sumire: One kilogram... Ah... I was shocked. Kanna: I did it! I won! Sumire: It looks that way... Kanna: The fast is over! Sakura, bring lots of food! Sakura: Y-yes! Kanna: *sounds of consumption of mass quantities* Mm... as I thought, fasting makes the body weak... *more sounds of consumption* Oogami: H, hey... That rate of eating... Sakura: The stomach will burst... Sumir: Hoohoo... but, it's just like Kanna. Kohran: Ah, Sumire-ha~n! Sumire: Ah, Kohran. Kohran: I apologize... The scale in the medical office was broken. ~ It was measuring things 2 kilograms heavier than they really were. I'll have it fixed soon. Sumire: Eh? Kanna: What did you say? Oogami: So, when Sumire-kun said "one kilogram heavier" ... Sumire: Yes... "One kilogram lighter" is what I was mistaken from. Kanna: Th-that can't be... Sumire: Ohohohohohoho... As I thought, my maintenance of health was perfect. Kanna: Next time, Sumire! Sumire: Look at her... Such an irrestible force at the table. Isn't she, Kohran? { She doesn't really say "at the table" but the context didn't seem clear to me by itself. } Kohran: Gah... It makes me feel dizzy... Kanna: Now you've ticked me off... This desperate eating is your fault! Sakura: Eh! You're still eating? Kanna: Call Orihime and the others back here. I'm going to eat all of the sweets they offered. Oogami: Hey now... Kanna: Sakura! Seconds! Last Picture ( "Everyone, let's eat!" ) Orihime Soletta ( "I like Japanese customs!" ) --------------- { Orihime's thing seems to be to use a lot of borrowed words and to mix Japanese metaphors with Western ones. That and putting "desu" and at the end of her sentences and "-san" at the end of nouns even when it may not be necessary. To reflect the use of a foreign language, what she says in English will be translated to Japanese to get idea of some of her mannerisms across. I'll note what she said in English of course. } Sometime during the 14th year of Taisho, the afternoon sun was shining down upon Teigeki, when the events began to take place. Kasumi: Eh...? But, these discarded documents? Orihime: Whatever, just trade it for this straw! Oogami: O-orihime-kun... Kasumi: The executive office is the place for the documents. Even if they are discarded they are not for trade. Orihime: Kasumi, you're a Japanese girl. Don't you know of the custom of the "warashibe chouja" { "Straw Millionaire" is literal from "warashibe chouja". I've certainly never heard of it. Anyone know of this custom? } Kasumi: I've heard of it, but that's an ancient custom... Orihime: Don't mince words with me! Hurry and give me the documents! Kasumi: So you've said... Oogami-san, please say something about this. LIPS Choice 1. Ask Orihime to behave. (Orihime - 1) 2. Ask that she surrender the documents. (Orihime +1) (Choice 2) Oogami: I'm sorry Kasumi-kun, but could you please give the documents? Orihime: Just as I thought, ensign-san. You really understand "warashibe chouja!" Kasumi: Oogami-san... What in the world is going on with Orihime-san...? Oogami: The truth is... { Flashback } About half an hour ago... Orihime: Ensign-san. Oogami: Hey, Orihime-kun. What's going on, that you're in such a good mood? Orihime: Hoohoo. I'm carrying a good thing in my hand. ~ It's a magic item, following an old Japanese legend. LIPS Choice 1. You mean "warashibe" right? (Orihime +1) 2. Isn't that... trash? (Orihime -1) (Choice 1) Oogami: You're referring to "warashibe" right? Orihime: Just as I thought, ensign-san. You are a Japanese man, though in this case I don't mean it in a bad way. ~ It's wonderful, this Japanese custom of "warashibe chouja." Oogami: Well, it's not really a custom... Orihime: I intend to get a lot of wonderful things from this "warashibe!" Oogami: Ah, Orihime-kun... ( Title Screen - "What a Wonderful Japanese-ism" ) Oogami: ...And that's how it started. Kasumi: So that's how it was... What a pity... Orihime: Kasumi-san! Stop looking at me like that! ~ At any rate! This is a Japanese custom! ~ You are Japanese yet you have no sense of obligation! Kasumi: That's not true what you say... Orihime: Since you resist, shall we do this by force? Kakugo wa ii? { "Are you ready?" } Kasumi: Ah, wait! Orihime-san! Match: Orihime vs. Sannin Musume Orihime: I've got the bundle of documents! Kasumi: Well... it wasn't enough. Orihime: Cheer up, Kasumi-san. With that "warashibe" you'll get something too. Kasumi: Th-thanks... Oogami: Sorry, Kasumi-kun... Kasumi: It's alright. Just get the documents back later, alright? Orihime: Now, let's look for our next target! ~ Ah, I've spotted Kanna-san. Kanna: N? What's up, you two? Here to eat? Orihime: What are you doing, carrying that dumbbell.... Kanna: Ah, this... I was bringing it from my room for a while... LIPS Choice: 1. That's some enthusiasm for physical strength. (Kanna +1) 2. Aren't you strong enough? (Choice 1) Oogami: That's some enthusiasm for physical strength. I should try doing that too. Kanna: Now you're exaggerating. You're embarassing me... (End Choice 1) Orihime: Trade this bundle of documents for the dumbbell at once, Kanna-san. Kanna: Why would I trade this for something like that? Orihime: Are you going against the custom of "warashibe chouja?" Kanna: "Warashibe chouja?" What does that have to do with anything? Orihime: Urusai! You have to do what I say and trade! { "Shut up" } Kanna: No. Orihime: Meeting with a Japanese person who doesn't following the custom... what should I do. Kanna: You have a problem? Orihime: Since this won't do... We'll have a match here. Kanna: Why go that far? Orihime: If I win, I get the dumbbell. Match: Orihime vs. Kanna Orihime: I've got the dumbbell! Kanna: Hey... What am I supposed to do with these documents? Orihime: They're business memos. Do whatever you want with them. Now, ensign-san, on to the next! Oogami: What have I gotten myself into? Orihime: Ah, I've found Kohran. Kohran: Hey, you two. I'm back. Oogami: What's this? Where did you go? Kohran: I spent some time in Asakasa... I went to buy some takoyaki. Orihime: Takoyaki? What's that? Timed LIPS 1. It's a kind of food with octopus. T2. It's a kind of earthenware. (Kohran +1) ( Choice T2 ) Oogami: It's a kind of earthenware. Maybe you've heard of aritayaki? Orihime: I see... So it's a kind of ceramic, is it? Kohran: Good one! That's a great joke, Oogami-han! Oogami: Y-you thought so? Orihime: Oh, it was a joke... { Oogami makes a joke here based on treating -yaki like a suffix for earthenware. Arita ware is a kind of porcelain, aritayaki in Japanese. In fact, the kanji for "yaki" is the same in both takoyaki and aritayaki, which adds to the joke, which Kohran obviously appreciated, being a fan of jokes and puns herself. } ( End Choice T2 ) Kohran: Takoyaki is a kind of food. It uses the arms of octopus. It's very tasty. { I've seen a picture of takoyaki in a Japanese menu. Even though I enjoy tako-sushi, I couldn't bring myself to order it to try it. If I ever do, I'll let you know how I found it. :) } Orihime: It has octopus? It does sound a little tasty. Kohran: What's that, Orihime... Do they eat octopus in Europe? Orihime: It's mixed with pasta. Kohran: Well, why don't we go to the dining hall so we can all eat? Orihime: Just a moment! Kohran: What's the matter? Orihime: Please trade the takoyaki for this dumbbell. Kohran: What's this... It's like "warashibe chouja." Orihime: Exactly! The Chinese know about the custom too, right Kohran? Kohran: Well, not exactly. But it's something I myself am familiar with. ~ { Considering her story in the first Hanagumi Columns game, she wouldn't be a stranger to the trading of items. Although that was in less forced fashion. } Would you be able to solve a puzzle of my devising? Orihime: It will be child's play! { Not sure about this line. Orihime says "Ocha no ko saisai desu." Which looks like something to do with tea for children but that's an educated guess. } Puzzle: Get all of the gems under the line in the time allotted. Orihime: Well, how was that? Please trade! Kohran: I got it, I got it. Here, the trade. Orihime: I've got the takoyaki! Kohran: Well, I can recycle the iron in the dumbbell and reuse it. Oogami: Um...Kohran. If you could return that to Kanna, I think she'll be happy. Orihime: On to our next mark! ~ Ah, it's Sakura-san! Sakura: Ah, Oogami-san, Orihime-san. Good afternoon. Oogami: Hey, Sakura-kun. Sakura: Ah...Oogami-san. Can I have a moment? Oogami: What is it? Sakura: Erm... If we could speak alone... LIPS Choice 1. Sure, Sakura-kun. 2. I'm sorry, Sakura-kun. (Sakura -1) (Choice 2) Oogami: I'm sorry Sakura-kun, but I can't keep Orihime-kun waiting... Sakura: Is that so...? Orihime: Ensign-san, Sakura-san has something she wants to talk to you about. ~ So I can wait for a little bit, can't I? (End Choice 2) Oogami: Is that so...sorry, Orihime-kun. Sakura: Sorry, Orihime-san. Orihime: I'll only wait a little bit. Sakura: Well, if we could go to the terrace... Oogami: Now then, what is it? Sakura: Oogami-san, are you free tonight? Oogami: Yes, I don't have anything to do. Sakura: The truth is, I've gotten my hands on two theatre tickets... Will you go with me? Orihime: Just a moment! ~ Please trade the tickets for these takoyaki. Sakura: Ta-takoyaki? Orihime: Sakura, you're a Japanese girl so you should know about "warashibe chouja." Sakura: Eh? Eh? What in the world is that? Orihime: Do not try to talk your way out, obey the custom and trade! Sakura: I-I will not. I certainly will not give these up! Orihime: Running away, that is cowardly! ~ I will catch her without fail! Oogami: Eh? H,hey you two wait for me! Puzzle: Get the gems under the line in the time allotted. *Sounds of a comic fall. One can assume a tackle of some sort* Sakura: Kya! Orihime: Hoohoo. I have you now. ~ I've got the theatre tickets! Sakura: The trouble I went through to get those tickets... Orihime: Please console yourself by eating the takoyaki. Narration: As so the time passed, and day turned into night. Orihime: We haven't seen anyone for a while, have we? Oogami: Seems like everyone is avoiding you... Orihime: Well, but from straw to theatre tickets is quite good. Oogami: Say, Orihime... Are you ready to stop now? Orihime: I think so... These theatre tickets are for tonight. ~ Not bad. Ensign-san, let's go together. Oogami: Eh, me? Orihime: You don't want to go with me? Oogami: That's not it at all, but... Sumire: Ah, ensign... ~ This is where you have been. I have been looking for you. Oogami: What's the matter, Sumire-kun? Sumire: I have received two tickets to the Daiteito Hotel dinner show. ~ Won't you please go with me? Orihime: Wait just a moment! Ensign-san was going with me to watch the theatre play. Sumire: Is that true, ensign? LIPS Choice 1. Go to the theatre with Orihime. 2. Go to the Daiteito Hotel with Sumire. (Time over - Sumire - 1) Orihime: Ensign-san is going with me to the theatre. Oogami: To tell the truth, I am... Sumire: Ah... is that the case... Orihime: By the way, Sumire-san. Do you know about "warashibe chouja?" Sumire: I know about it. What of it? Orihime: Trade the dinner show tickets for the theatre tickets! Sumire: Why do I need to do that? Orihime: "Warashibe chouja!" Sumire: You are supposed to trade to the other person what that other person needs! Orihime: Is that true, ensign-san? Oogami: It's true. I told you that a number of times before, didn't I? Orihime: Ah... Well could you tell me one more time? Oogami: Is... is that what you want? Sumire: So the cause of all that ruckus earlier, that was you Orihime-san, wasn't it? Orihime: I don't know what you're talking about! Sumire: If that is true, then how did you get those tickets? Orihime: Do you have a problem with it? Sumire: I have a big problem with it... It is because of it that the ensign has to decline my invitation... Orihime: So then what about it? Shall we clearly decide this with a match? Sumire: That will do... When I win, the ensign will go to the dinner with me... Orihime: When I win, I will take the tickets and ensign-san and I will go to the dinner show! Oogami: H-hey, you two... Sumire: And now, with the usual rules... Oogami: Begin! { The phrase being used is "Iza... jinjou ni... shoubu!" If I'm not mistaken it's used as a traditional opening for a match. Fans of the Samurai Shodown series of fighting games will recognize that as the opening for every match. I take it the context here is that they are really serious about this. :) } Match: Orihime vs. Sumire Orihime: I did it! I got the Dinner Show Tickets! Sumire: How can this be... I am strongly disappointed in that match... Orihime: It's just a match. Daijobu ka? { "Are you alright?" } Sumire: I-it was not enough was it... Orihime: Now, then, ensign-san. To the dinner show, ikimasu! { "Dinner show, let's go (desu)!" } Reni: Orihime... Orihime: Ah... What is the matter, Reni? Reni: You dropped this. Orihime: *gasp* Th-that's... Oogami: Straw... Orihime: D-don't come any closer! *runs away* Oogami: Ah, Orihime-kun! Sumire: She ran away didn't she... Reni: What could be the matter? Oogami: Well, well... ( Last picture - "I love Japanese customs!" ) Reni Milchstrasse ( "Hundt... I've been looking for you..." ) ----------------- Sometime during the 14th year of Taisho, A somewhat damp breeze causes the plants to sway in the morning before noon... Oogami: Well, another day here another day to do my best. ~ Yes, the door is open, come in. Reni: ..... Oogami: What's the matter, Reni? Reni: Hundt is gone... Oogami: Hundt? LIPS Choice: 1. What do you mean by Hundt? 2. Futon is missing? 3. Shall we go look for him? (Le +1) { Choice 2 is taking the Japanese katakana for Hundt - Funto and mixing it up. ) (Choice 3) Reni: Yes.... Oogami: We keep him in the garden, so he couldn't have left Teigeki. We'll find him soon. (End Choice 3) ( Episode title - "Your name is..." ) Oogami: It certainly... Doesn't look like he's in the garden. Reni: When I brought him his breakfast, he was gone... Oogami: Is that so... Well for now, let's look for him in Teigeki. Reni: Yes... Sumire: Ah, ensign... ~ What are you doing here? Timed LIPS 1. Doing a little exercise. D2. We are looking for Futon. T2. We are looking for Hundt. (Choice T2) Oogami: We're looking for Hundt. You haven't seen him have you, Sumire-kun? Reni: Right. Sumire: Hundt....? Whose name might that be? Reni: The name of the dog... Sumire: Ah... When we were deciding, "Hanamaru" was the name I bestowed. Reni: Hundt... Sumire: It is Hanamaru... Oogami: Now, now, either is fine isn't it... Sumire: It is not! This is a black and white issue which I must press... Reni: The dog's name is Hundt... Sumire: Well then, how does this sound? The winner of a match will have her name be officially used. Reni: A match? Sumire: That is correct... And of course, there will be no hard feelings on the part of the loser... Reni: Understood... Sumire: Now then, let us begin! (End Choice T2) Match: Reni vs. Sumire Reni: I win... Sumire: I did not agree with that match! { I think the context is that she doesn't like her performance } Reni: The dog's name will be Hundt, won't it... Sumire: I understand. He will be called Hundt, correct? Oogami: Then, Sumire-kun... You haven't seen Hundt have you? Sumire: I have not seen him today... Has he really disappeared? Reni: He has been gone for a while, and he is not in the garden... Sumire: Well then, I will also look for him around here. Oogami: If you would. Reni: Hundt... Where could you have gone... Oogami: For now, let's look for him starting in the basement and work our way up looking for him. Reni: Captain... I hear something from over there... Oogami: In the warehouse... Right, let's go. Kohran: What's this, Oogami-han... Reni. Oogami: Oh, it was just Kohran, wasn't it... Kohran: "Oh, it was just Kohran." Some greeting that is... Who were you expecting? Reni: We were looking for Hundt... Kohran: Hundt? Ah, you mean Long? Reni: Hundt... Kohran: I think Long would be a good fit for him, wouldn't it... Timed LIPS 1. "Long" is good, isn't it... D2. I think "Hundt" is good too... (Reni +1) T2. I think "Futon" is good too... (Reni -1) 3. Either is fine, isn't it? (Kohran -1) (Choice D2) Oogami: I think Hundt is goon. Reni gave that name, didn't she? Reni: Captain... Kohran: Is that so... I thought Long was a good name... ( End Choice D2 ) (Choice 3) Kohran: It's not fine! A thing's very essence is a name given! Reni: Correct... Kohran: And so, the dog's name is "Long." (End Choice 3) Reni: Hundt... Kohran: Long is a good name. Reni: It won't do... His name is Hundt... Kohran: We going to keep disagreeing, so why don't we decide this? Reni: Understood... Then, let's have a match. Kohran: The winner gets to decide the name then, doesn't she... I won't lose. Match: Reni vs. Kohran Reni: I win... Kohran: But I still think Long is a good name... Reni: Hundt... Kohran: I got it, I got it... Hundt, right, Hundt. Reni: Right... Oogami: By the way, Kohran... You haven't seen Hundt have you? Kohran: I've been packing things away here since morning... I haven't seen him... ~ But... Once I finish here, I'll join you in looking for him. Continue searching on the second floor. (Choice 2) Oogami: Well let's continue things by looking on the first floor. Reni: Not here... Oogami: Where in the world could he have gone? Orihime: What are you doing? Oogami: Orihime-kun... Orihime: It must be something fun. Please tell me what it is! Reni: We are looking for Hundt... Orihime: Futon is it? Reni: Hundt... Oogami: It's the puppy we are keeping in the garden. Orihime: Ah... you're talking about Altair aren't you? Is he gone? Reni: It's not Altair... It's Hundt. Orihime: It's Altair! I gave that name, so there is no mistake! Reni: Hundt... Orihime: What's this? For Reni to be stubborn when she's usually indifferent about things is unusual isn't it? ~ However, I say it's Altair, so Hundt or Futon it doesn't matter since the name is Altair! ~ But... since Reni is so concerned about it, I'm willing to compromise. Reni: Compromise...? Orihime: If you win in a match against me, you can call him Hundt or Futon as much as you want! Reni: Then it's a match... Orihime: Ii desu! I want to see you compete for real. ~ I won't go easy on you! Let's go! { "Okay!" } Match: Reni vs. Orihime Reni: I win... Orihime: I guess it wasn't enough. I call it whatever Reni wants. ~ Well, where could Futon have gone? Reni: Hundt... Oogami: We have not been able to find where he is... That puppy... Orihime: Is that so. Well, I will help you look for Futon! Reni: Hundt... ( End Choice 2 ) Reni: Not here... Oogami: Where could he have gone? Sakura: Ah, Oogami-san... Oogami: Hey, Sakura-kun. ( Choice 1 ) Oogami: He's the puppy we're keeping in the garden. He's called Hundt. Reni: Right, Hundt. Sakura: Eh...when was that decided? I said that Shiro was a good name... Reni: I offered the name... Sakura: That's sneaky, Reni... I said I was happy with the name Shiro... Reni: Hundt... Sakura: Oogami-san... What are your feelings about this? Oogami: No preference... Basically, I will respect everyone's intentions in this. Sakura: So then, you will respect my intentions in this, right? Reni: Hundt... Sakura: Say, Reni... I want to name it as well... ~ So perhaps the fair way to do this is to have a match to determine who will name? Reni: .... Sakura: Please, Reni... Reni: Alright... Sakura: Now then, let's go! Reni: I will not lose. Match: Reni vs. Sakura Reni: I win... Sakura: You are no beginner... I will call him Hundt as well, Reni. Reni: Right... Sakura: But where could Shiro... I mean... Hundt have gone? Oogami: I would think he wouldn't have been able to leave Teigeki... Sakura: Once I finish with my errands I will help look for him... Oogami: Thanks, Sakura-kun. Reni: Hundt... Oogami: So he wasn't in Teigeki after all... Reni: Ah... ~ Hundt! Oogami: It is him... With Maria? Maria: Ah, Captain...Reni. Reni: Hundt. Maria: He followed me down to the tool room, and I've been watching over him. Oogami: You mean he was with you all this time? Maria: He really is cute, isn't he? Reni: Yes. Maria: Come to think of it, everyone calls him whatever they like, don't they? Oogami: Well, that's... Maria: I have a name for him too... I think Potchka is good for him... LIPS Choice 1. Isn't that a Russian word for "flower bud?" 2. Isn't that a Russian word for "puppy?" (Choice 1) Oogami: Isn't that a Russian word for "flower bud?" Maria: I should expect no less of the Captain... You're very knowledgeable, aren't you? ~ The blooming of a flower is what I wanted to express in the name. Reni: The name is Hundt... Maria: That's your name for the dog, right? Reni: Yes... Maria: Wouldn't I want to name the dog as well? Reni: ..... Maria: I... no, everyone feels the same way you do about giving it a name. Reni: I understand. Maria: Thank you, Reni. Reni: We will have a match. Maria: Eh? Reni: If everyone calls the dog what they want, it will be confused... ~ So, one name will be good. ~ It's name is Hundt. Maria: As you say, I will accept the match. Reni: Let's go. Match: Reni vs. Maria I win... Maria: You're pretty good... I will call him Hundt as well. Sumire: You've found Hanamaru? Kohran: Sumire-han, it's called "Hundt." Orihime: That's right! If you don't call him "Futon" Reni will get mad. Sakura: Orihime-san, it's "Hundt." Reni: Everyone... Oogami: Everyone was worried about him. Sumire: While I was looking around here I heard the worried voices of everyone looking for him everywhere. Kohran: Ahhh... I'm glad he was found. Orihime: That's a relief, right Reni? Reni: Yes... Kayama: Hey, everyone. What are you up to? ~ Oh! What a cute puppy... ~ The is cute, isn't it? A thing that lifts the spirits. ~ Right, as for its name, "Umi" it shall be! { The "Puppies are cute" doesn't translate well from the pun Kayama is making on his own catchphrase. "*** wa ii na" where *** is the thing Kayama is happy about. So instead of: Umi wa ii na (The sea is nice, isn't it) He says here: Koinu kawaii na (The puppy is cute, isn't it) "Umi" means "sea" of course, which is what he's naming the dog} Oogami: Hey, hey... Maria: The dog's name is Hundt, Kayama-san. Reni: It's fine... Oogami: Eh? Reni: Everyone can call it what they like... Oogami: Wh,why is that? Reni: Everyone cares about Hundt. ~ So it's not good if I force my choice to be the name. Maria: Reni... Orihime: That's big of you, Reni. Reni: Well, I suppose...
