CONCLUSION/CREDITS/CONTACT ======================================================================== 1. CVXFREAK's INTRODUCTION ======================================================================== Ever since Pokemon Red and Blue hit in 1998, I've been playing the series occasionally. In 1999, Pokemon Yellow hit. I played that, too. But I wasn't really INTO the series all that much. I'm more into Silent Hill, Resident Evil and Final Fantasy. But I still like playing the Pokemon games. They're fun on my new GameBoy Advance. Pokemon Red, Yellow and Blue takes place 3 years before Crystal, Gold and Silver's times. Red, Yellow and Blue focus on Ash Ketchum and Gary Oak as they compete to complete their Pokemon journey. 3 years later, Chris and Kris try to compete for the Pokemon Kanto- Johto Championships. They need to raise Pokemon in order to win the championship, much Gary and Ash before them. Will they win? That's pretty much up to you. This guide will cover almost all the aspects of Pokemon Crystal. This is my first for Pokemon, so be fair! Good luck! ======================================================================== 2. SECTIONS 1-5 ONLY ONES NOT UPDATED, POKEDEX IS NOT YET COMPLETED AND THE WALKTHROUGH WILL BE CHANGED. ================== September 29, 2001 ================== UPDATE: Cleaned a few sections up. Added my Review. ============== August 4, 2001 ============== UPDATE: Started FAQ. Will finish within 3 days. ======================================================================== 3. STORY ======================================================================== NOTE: This is from the instruction booklet. In this world live creatures called Pokemon. Humans and Pokemon have lived, worked and played together in harmony for ages. Nevertheless, there are still numerous mysteries surrounding them. In order to find out more about these strange and marvelous creatures, many scientists- such as Professor Elm of New Bark Town- have dedicated their lives to Pokemon research. One day, Professor Elm invites you to the lab. When you arrive, he says, "There are many things I don't quite understand quite yet, so I'd like you to raise one of these Pokemon which I recently caught." Since you're a curious person, you agree to help. Suddenly, Professor Elm receives an e-mail from his friend, Mr. Pokemon, asking him to come and his latest discovery. Professor Elm is far too busy to leave his lab, though. So after you choose your Pokemon, he asks you to go see what Mr. Pokemon has discovered. Just then, you notice that someone is lurking in the shadows outside, watching through the window. It appears to be a boy about your age, so you decide to go outside and talk to him. But when you approach the boy, he pushes you backward, saying, "What are you looking at?" Who is this strange boy, and what has Mr. Pokemon discovered? You can set the game's built-in clock to match the time in the real world. For example, if you play the game at night, it will also be night in the game, and you may be able to find some Pokemon that only come out at that time. There are also things in the game, such as "Tuesday Events"- you can participate in the event only if you play on the specified day. If you are playing Pokemon Crystal in the United States, Daylight Savings Time (DST) may be in effect. For most of the US, DST begins at 2:00 a.m. on the first Sunday of April and lasts until 2:00 a.m. on the last Sunday in October. There are some areas in the United States that do not observe DST. Please check your local regulations when entering time in Pokemon Crystal. When DST changes in real life, you should go to your house and talk to your Mom in the game to go change the clock setting. ======================================================================== 4. BOY OR GIRL ======================================================================== So are you are girl or boy? It doesn't matter. If you choose either character the events are basically the same. I chose the girl, though I'm a boy, because I already chose the boy in Gold and Silver. Girl: I named her Jill, after Resident Evil and Resident Evil 3: Last Escape's Jill Valentine. She is basically the same as the boy, but in a different gender. Boy: I leave him as Chris, named after Chris Redfield from Resident Evil and Resident Evil CODE: Veronica X. Once again, he's basically the as the girl. There's no difference. Rival: I named him Wesker after Wesker from RE. He's evil like Wesker, so I see the connection:) The Pokegear will be in Gold and Silver style if you choose to be the boy. Some slight appearance changes will occur depending on the gender that you choose. It will have a baby blue color to it with a different appearance for girls. When you use surf your character morphs into a Lapras Sprite. Lapras Sprites are Red for the boy but Blue for the girl. ======================================================================== 5. CHOOSING THE TIME ======================================================================== Well, try to pick the EXACT time in real life because the time changes Pokemon availability. Some Pokemon are nocturnal, so only come at night. If it's 10:00 a.m. in real life, try choosing that time. You don't have to, but it helps so you don't get confused. Try choosing the correct day, too. The Day Siblings come on certain days, so you want the actual day to remember when to go. If it is Daylight Savings Time, talk to the character's Mom to change the time. Some places, like Indiana, don't observe Daylight Savings Time, so you should simply ignore it completely. ======================================================================== 6. WALKTHROUGH ======================================================================== The Walkthrough is in 2 sections. One is the main section which goes in-depth and offers movesets and store lists, the other is the older section which was written by CVXFreak, that is written as the Quick and Easy section because it contains mostly only the mandatory areas. ======================================================================== 6.1 JOHTO ======================================================================== ***New Bark Town*** You begin in your room when you wake up and find out the time, when you walk down your mother programs the day and gives you your Pokegear. BREED ======================================================================== Pokemon can breed in Crystal version. Breeding is a way of passing genes, trying to get Shining Pokemon, special moves or just a low level Pokemon of the species. All Pokemon have 1 of 3 genders, male, female or unkown. Most Pokemon have the gender of either male or female, however a few are limited to one gender (the genderless will not develop a gender and can never have one). Here are those limited to one gender, FEMALE ONLY Chansey Blissey Jynx Smoochum Kangaskan Miltank Nidoran Female Nidorina Nidoqueen MALE ONLY Nidoran Male Nidorino Nidoking Tauros Tyrogue Hitmonchan Hitmonlee Hitmontop GENDERLESS Articuno Celebi Ditto Entei Ho-oh Lugia Magnemite Magneton Mew Mewtwo Moltres Raikou Staryu Starmie Suicune Voltorb Electrode Unown Zapdos When breeding for moves one needs compatible Pokemon with the move. Compatibility is done in 15 groups. The baby is almost always the mother, the only exception is Ditto when the baby is the non-Ditto parent To have a TM/HM passed the father must have it and the baby must be able to naturally learn it. To have a level-up move both parents must learn it. Breeding moves only the father must know. Here are all the groups ----NO EGGS All members are unable to produce eggs Articuno Celebi Cleffa Elekid Entei Ho-oh Igglybuff Lugia Magby Mew Mewtwo Moltres Nidoqueen Nidorina Pichu Raikou Smoochum Suicune Togepi Tyrogue Unown Zapdos ----PLANT Bayleef Bellosom Bellsprout Bulbasaur Chikorita Exeggcute Exeggutor Gloom Hoppip Ivysaur Jumpluff Meganium Oddish Paras Parasect Skiploom Sunflora Sunkern Tangela Venusaur Victreebell Vileplume Weepinbell ----BUG Ariados Beedrill Butterfree Caterpie Forretress Gligar Heracross Kakuna Ledian Ledyba Metapod Paras Parasect Pineco Pinsir Scizor Scyther Shuckle Spinarak Venomoth Venonat Weedle Yanma ----FLYING Aerodactyl Crobat Dodrio Doduo Farfetch'd Fearow Golbat Hoothoot Murkrow Natu Noctowl Pidgeot Pidgeotto Pidgey Skarmory Spearow Togetic Xatu Zubat ----HUMANSHAPE Abra Alakazam Drowzee Electabuzz Hitmonchan Hitmonlee Hitmontop Hypno Jynx Kadabra Machamp Machoke Machop Magmar Mr. Mime ----MINERAL Geodude Golem Graveler Onix Steelix Sudowoodo ----INDETERMINATE Gastly Gengar Grimer Haunter Koffing Magcargo Misdreavous Muk Slugma Weezing Wobbufett ----GROUND (LUCKY SINCE SMEARGLE IS HERE) Aipom Ampharos Arbok Arcanine Cyndaquil Delibird Dewgong Diglett Donphan Dugtrio Dunsparce Eevee Ekans Espeon Farfetch'd Flaaffy Flareon Furret Girafarig Golduck Granbull Miltank Nidoking Nidoran Female Nidoran Male Nidorino Ninetails Persian Phanpy Pikachu Piloswine Ponyta Primeape Psyduck Quagsire Quilava Raichu Rapidash Raticate Rattata Rhydon Rhyhorn Sandshrew Sandslash Seel Sentret Smeargle Sneasel Snubble Stantler Swinub Tauros Teddiursa Typhlosion Umbreon Ursaring Vaporeon Vulpix Wooper ----WATER 1 Azumarril Blastoise Corsola Crocanaw Delibird Dewgong Dragonair Dragonite Dratini Feraligatr Golduck Horsea Kanuto Kabutops Kingdra Lapras Mantine Marril Octilerry Omanyte Omastar Politoed Poliwag Poliwhirl Poliwrath Psyduck Quagsire Remoraid Seadra Seel Slowbro Slowking Slowpoke Squirtle Totodile Wartortle Wooper ----WATER 2 Chinchou Goldeen Gyarados Lanturn Magikarp Octillery Qwilfish Remoraid Seaking ----WATER 3 Cloyster Corsola Kabuto Kabutops Kingler Krabby Omanyte Omastar Shellder Tentacool Tentacruel ----MONSTER Ampharos Bayleef Blastoise Bulbasaur Charizard Charmander Charmeleon Chikorita Croconaw Cubone Feraligatr Flaffy Ivysaur Kangaskan Lapras Larvitar Lickitung Mareep Marowak Meganium Nidoking Nidoran Female Nidoran Male Nidorino Pupitar Rhydon Rhyhorn Slowbro Slowking Slowpoke Snorlax Squirtle Totodile Tyranitar Venusaur Wartortle ----FAIRY Azumarril Blissey Chansey Clefable Clefairy Granbull Hopip Jugglypuff Jumpluff Marril Pikachu Raichu Skiploom Snubull Wigglytyuff ----DRAGON Arbok Charizard Charmander Charmeleon Dragonair Dragonite Dratini Ekans Gyarados Horsea Kingdra Magikarp Seadra ----GENDERLESS Electrode Magnemite Magneton Porygon Porygon 2 Starmie Staryu Voltorb ----DITTO Ditto as one parent Any offspring producable parent How to breed Shining Pokemon is explained in the next section. ======================================================================== 10. SHINING POKEMON ======================================================================== Very rarely you may stumble upon a Pokemon that just before battle shimmers. Upon close inspection (real close sometimes) you notice its colors are different. This is do to a very selective status gene variety. All Pokemon have a gene for 4 of there statistics and the other HP (Health Points not Hidden Power) is determined by those 4. Genes are what will determine how far of from the final maximum stats (see other guides for those) your Pokemon is. The ideal Pokemon has 15 in everything. Each gene away from 15 determines by 2 points how far off the Pokemon is. The formula that reveals the Gene at level 100 (M-Y)/2 with M-Max Stat of Specie Y-Your specimens Max stat There is an Attack (also determines gender), defense, speed and a Special (both Special Attack and Special Defense). Shining Pokemon may have the following genes in those categories. Attack: 2,3,6,7,A,B,E,F Defense: A Speed: A Special: A Therefore the HP can be 8 or 0. The 8 occurs half of the time while the 0 occurs the other half. Only under those circumstances will your Pokemon be Shining. Other then the Red Gyarados and maybe the Odd Egg (Crystal Only) there are no guaranteed shining Pokemon. You can still encounter them but with the odds of 1:4096. This 1:4096 can be anywhere from your Starter, Extremespeed Dratini, a wild Rattata to even Lugia. The Odd Egg has a 1:2 Shining normal ratio They have also been known to be distributed at the Pokemon Center New York in the ratio of 1:8 if they are hatched from Eggs with special Moves or a guarantee if its a Legendary Pokemon (not including Celebi and Mew). Genes can be bred. You can breed Pokemon to be shining. For the best chances you need a Ditto which can be guaranteed with this trick. 1) Get Shining Gyarados 2) Send it to RBY and teach it the TM Mimic 3) Send it back to GSC and delete all moves but Mimic 4) Send it RBY 5) Find a wild Ditto 6) Use Mimic first (YOU MUST BE FASTER) on Transform (duh!) 7) Have Ditto Transform 8) Transform into Ditto 9) Ditto use transform again 10) Catch Ditto 11) Check the Health Points, they should be over the allowed Maximum (to get rid of this heal at a Pokemon Center (NOT the New York Store)) 12) Trade it GSC 13) Look at its light Blue color Breeding with Ditto has 1:64 chances. If you don't have RBY you can get 1:64 chances on a Starter with this chain that has to be followed precisely. To do this you need Shining Gyarados. M=Male F=Female (Skip 0 if Shining Gyarados is M) 0) Breed Gyarados (F) with any qualified for Magikarp (M) 1) Breed Gyarados (M) (or Magikarp (M) baby from 0) with Charmander (F) for a Charmander (F) they are rare 1:8 but possible. 2) Breed Charmander (F) with a desired Parent for Charmander (M), the baby has a 1:64 chance of being shining because the attack genes (determine gender) are ALL in the M category for Starters. ---To go beyond Charmander---- 3) Take Charmander (M) (Which may or may not be Shining) and mate it with a Starter (F) make sure the baby is a (F) 4) Breed the baby girl with a match. Genes are passed from Father to Daughter or Mother to Son, which is why those work, but if Ditto is involved the genes come from it. Note---The genes I refer to is the attack gene which determines gender if in that specie both of the genders are possible If Shining Ditto is a parent the odds are 1:64 If a Shining (or properly gened) male mates with a Normal female it is also 1:64 If the baby has a 7:8 chance of being male and its MOTHER has the appropriate genes it is also 1:64, all genes in the male mix. If the baby has 7:8 chances of being a girl then the odds are 3:256, lacking the E and F genes. If the baby has a 3:4 chance of being male then the odds are 3:256 because only the 2 and 3 are missing. If the baby has a 3:4 chance of being female the odds are also 3:256 Either gender 1:2 have the chances of 1:128 Either gender 1:4 have the chances of 1:256 Males that occur only 1:8 have 1:256 chances (the E and F genes) Females with 1:8 can NOT be Shining (0 and 1 genes can not cause Shining) ======================================================================== 11. BATTLE TOWER ======================================================================== This is the new Battle Tower exclusive to Pokemon Crystal. Here is all the information I found. The Battle Tower is located west of Olivine City. In Battle Tower, you fight other in game trainers with Pokemon at certain levels. They are fairly difficult, but proper training and proper team management can beat them. Here are the rules: - Only 3 Pokemon on a team. - All 3 can't be the same. - They MUST hold different items. - They must be within the level area of the tower. There is an excellent guide on how to win in the battle tower at www.gamefaqs.com Beware the people in the battle tower cheat! If you want to Perish trap the foe you have to go down with it! ======================================================================== 12. TRADES ======================================================================== The Trade and Battle Centers are only for Gold, Silver and Crystal. New Pokemon have the items there trainers left them with. The time caspsule is to trade with the original 3 game paks. Red, Blue and Yellow. These Pokemon contain always contain an item at first but if a player removes the item, the item is permanetly gone rom that Pokemon. If the item is replaced the replacement is on until otherwise altered. This is a list of items in all 3 paks. (Unless mentioned when a Pokemon evolves it keeps the attached item. (Items in capital letters means there is absolutely no other way to get the item but traded Pokemon. You should get it to the red zone and chuck Ultra Balls (If you have) after placing an ailment on these. ======================================================================== 16.3 SUICUNE ======================================================================== Suicune is now a garunteed encounter. Your best bet is to weaken it severely. Once it has been weakened to the red zone ensure that it under an ailment. Sleep, Freeze and Paralysis are the best. At this point chuck Ultra Balls at it. Eventually you should have it in your party! ======================================================================== 16.4 RAIKOU AND ENTEI ======================================================================== These 2 are the most frustrating Pokemon ever! They flee at first chance, have the speed to do this quickly. Then to make things worse they have Roar to have Mean Look and Spider Web ineffective! They have no set nest, they keep running from area to area as you do, or as time passes. There is an art to capturing these two. It involves using a master ball on them. If your gonna use it, use it on either one. For the other or both your best bet is to put it to sleep, then hack away! Apparently if you use Repels even with Pokemon above level 40 these two can appear. Your best bet is to use someone with a Sleep Move that is fast (Jumpluff and Gengar are good) and also a Pokemon able to deal lots of damage, that knows False Swipe. A pokemon with Fly is good for my plan. To seek them I suggest you use Max Repel. Fly to Ecruteak and see where they are. Try to intercept them but remember that each time you enter and exit any building or route they move 1 area (USSUALLY in an understanding order). If you can not intercept them fly back to Ecruteak to cause a reshuffling of there position. After they have been intercepted try to put them to sleep. Then deal damage to them. If they escape its OK, they keep all damage. Just Heal and retry. When the HP is low enough chuck Ultra Balls, Fast Balls or Heavy Balls at them for Maximum effectiveness. ======================================================================== 16.5 HO-OH ======================================================================== Resting at the top of the Tin Tower is a level 60 Ho-oh. When trying to catch it you should use a non-grass tyoe with a Sleep Inducing move or run it out of Fire Blast and Gust PP with Double Team. Once it is asleep switch to the Big Guns. After hacking away at its HP try to chuck Ultra Balls or Heavy Balls at it. Once you catch it, you can fly away from the roof top! ======================================================================== 16.6 SNORLAX ======================================================================== Blocking Digglett cave is this lump of fat. It is a good Pokemon. Treat it like Ho-Oh but Beware its Rest technique. ======================================================================== 16.7 LUGIA ======================================================================== Deep inside Whirl Islands is Lugia. Treat it like Ho-oh but with Hydro Pump instead of Fire Blast. Just keep trying to catch it and eventually you should succeed. ======================================================================== 16.8 LAPRAS ======================================================================== Every Friday night Lapras comes deep inside Union Cave. It is level 20 so if you aready caught the Dogs, use your False Swiper's False Swipe to reduce the HP to 1 and then go for the finish with Sleep Moves and Ultra Balls! ======================================================================== 16.9 MEW AND CELEBI ======================================================================== These two Pokemon are only available at Nintendo Events ***MEW*** It is the star of Pokemon The First Movie! It is pretty powerful and mysterious and is the real version of the clone, Mewtwo. Many fans have it already. It can not be recieved in the Japanese Version of RBY, thay is just a false code that many have fallen for. It is a powerful Psychic Type. ***CELEBI*** It is the star of the 4th Pokemon Movie, Pokemon The Movie 4:A Timeless Encounter do out in October. It can travel between time and is a pretty powerful Grass/Psychic Type hybrid. It can be captured in the Japanese Version of Pokemon Crystal as part of a rare download quest. ======================================================================== 17. TEAM CREATION ======================================================================== Teams are a vital part of Pokemon. Inside the game you need to ensure that your Pokemon can travel quickly with Fly and use Surf and other Hms. Outside you need to use a well assembled team. To have a team work the moves have to be top notch and many other stats have to be worked on. Your team needs to support its weakness and strenghts. Several vital aspects are needed for teams, I consider the following absolutely important Starter This Pokemon should be fast enough to attack first (or have an attack that ensures this) on and should be able to defeat several of the opponents pokemon. This Pokemon should need no set up (i.e. Curse, Swords Dance, Agility and Amnesia) Attacker A Pokemon able to be set up. This Pokemon should be able to take down the most Pokemon Sweeper A Pokemon able to finish the game for you. The following are useful in situations Hazer Ends all status changes, uses the move Haze Psuedo-Hazer A false Hazer, eliminates status changes in other ways most notably the use of Roar and Whirlwind Trapper Prevents retreats with Mean Look and Spider Web Psuedo-Trapper Traps with other methods, the moves Clamp, Whirlwind, Wrap, Bind and Fire Spin prevent escape Passer Uses Baton Pass after boosting up stats Psuedo-Passer Uses moves like Light Screen, Reflect and Safegaurd which pass on without Baton Pass ======================================================================== 17.1 CONCLUSION/CREDITS/CONTACT* ======================================================================== ======================================================================== CVXFREAK'S REVIEW ======================================================================== Nintendo has done it again! Although I don't play Pokemon that much, this game is enjoyable. I like almost every aspect! Good job Nintendo! Pokemon Crystal is basically an add on to the Gold and Silver Version, kinda like what Pokemon Yellow was to red and Blue. Pokemon Crystal takes place 3 years after Red, Blue and Yellow and follows the story of 2 young people who want to be Pokemon masters. Pokemon are like animals with special powers, like fire and ice! They learn to grow up like real animals do! It's really cool if you know the previous versions! GRAPHICS: 9 The graphics are great! For a GBC game, the animations are pretty cool and gives way to the capabilities of GameBoy Advance! There is a lot of detail and color for a GBC game and places like the Ice Path simply amazed me! AUDIO: 9 For a GBC game, it's pretty good. The sound gets a little repetative, but no where near annoying! The battle sounds fit the mood and travel sounds fit the mood! The sound is tinny, though, but it is no biggy. GAMEPLAY: 9 You travel around, collecting Pokemon as you go. You fight against other trainers to gain experience with Pokemon! There's also some backtracking to get to new areas! I also like controlling either a boy or girl, since what people say may differ from game to game. There's also the real time factor, which some Pokemon only come out at night! Cool! PRICE: 9 For $30, it's very fair. Games like these are priceless. It's fun to battle and trade with different people! It's a new type of concept. Very good and affordable price! If you can't afford it save up! VERY well worth it! REPLAYABILITY: 9 Well, once you beat the game with a certain starter Pokemon, you can try the game again with another starter Pokemon! Or you can play as the boy this time! There are VERY many areas to explore, so you miss them the first time around, but certainly you don't wanna miss them the second or third time around. You can also replay it if you missed out on a rare Pokemon like Lugia! RENT OR BUY- BUY! Go to Toys R Us and buy it right now! You want to catch them all! Go ahead! Renting won't even be worth it! OVERALL: 9 Get this B+/A- hybrid game. It's very well worth it. If you don't you'll obviously miss out! ----CREDITS ---CVXFREAK THANKS YOU "Well, thanks for reading my first Pokemon Guide.
